As a side note, an unfortunate event I witnessed as a repair tech was a brand new (think less than a month) 17" Macbook Pro with a multi-hundred dollar extended warranty being turned down for service because the girl spilled a Coke on it and the warranty didn't cover accidental damage. Her dad b*tched at Apple until they agreed to fix it haha

It was shocking to take off the bottom and see Coke syrup sticking to literally everything in this $2k laptop.

02/13/2018 - 12:49pm ...again, Time Machine is

...again, Time Machine is just a backup system. Any other backup system could do the same thing. A hard drive failure can still just as easily happen on a Mac and result in loss of data, and outside of their embedded SSDs, use the same parts as non-Apple computers (look up the Geforce "Bumpgate"... It affected all systems).

I know a thing or two about the various brands of computers as I was certified to do warranty work on Apple, Dell, and HP systems. HP's were garbage, Dells were surprisingly well put together even with inferior materials, and Apples were, as you notice, very high quality and they demanded best in class service from its subcontractors.

Having said that, they are all prone to the same failures. Macs in particular seem to operate very hot due to poor ventilation, which can cause increased wear on parts.

If you are happy with your Apple, good, but it is disingenous to suggest they are not prone to basic failures or contain some sort of "magic" in Time Machine. I have seen botched updates on Macbooks. I have seen software just stop working in Mac OS. No hardware or software is perfect.

Yes, spend triple the amount necessary when the bottom line to your post is to have a backup system.

10/20/2017 - 12:39pm Go to Harbor Freight and buy

Go to Harbor Freight and buy a little tiny TailGator generator. A little noise, sure, but no worries about running a battery dead. Plus, then you have a way to power the fridge next time the power goes out.

I think the 20% off coupons work on it, so like $90.

The same reason why an overly enthusiastic quarterback barking out the cadence can get called for a false start based on head movement. The motion acts to draw the defense offsides.

Motion is a legal movement and any effect it has on drawing the defense offsides is incidental, and no player may be moving toward the line of scrimmage at the snap of the ball, that is an illegal shift.

09/18/2017 - 10:31am I always liked Video Studio.

I always liked Video Studio. Simple, has some neat features, and not too expensive at ~$100.

Coming from a nerd, I will say that it is all about his drive to know this stuff. The best resources are on the internet with some googling down the rabbit hole. It is not always something you can just be taught... It is a passion. Kids these days pick up things faster than we can imagine, so don't be afraid to give him some tools to play around with.

That's where my train of thought was going as well, that giving up a few plays like that was not worth disrupting the pass attack. I am sure they will coach it differently with a team that has the skill players to really burn us.

I kind of thought the same thing, but after hit with it SEVEN times. Maybe it was not alarming enough to DB to make a change.

09/13/2017 - 9:11am I was always taught that you

I was always taught that you aren't Reggie White just because you put on your jersey... We have a talented DLine, but if you bust through the interior of the line with no resistence, retrace your steps because the screen is coming. That was a basic concept for us and the fact that they aren't doing it almost makes me think they aren't taught it for some reason.

08/23/2017 - 11:42am I am a developer at a non-IT

I am a developer at a non-IT company, so I could see it being a culture thing compared to a SV company. Here all of us in IT are second class citizens :)

08/23/2017 - 8:28am What do "females and others"

What do "females and others" have to put up with? I work in IT, there are not a lot of women here... But there is also a huge lack of candidates in coming into the pool. Everything I see, though, outside of the lopsided representation that exists across most technical positions, is an indistinguishable level of respect between men and women.

08/23/2017 - 7:53am Try working in corporate America

I can't speak to smaller companies, but I am sure it is creeping in there now. The things we HAVE to talk about at work are ridiculous, when they should just be private. Do we have to "celebrate diversity" and talk about our sexual orientation or how different cultures make us feel, or can we just all get along and fire the a-holes that can't be professionals?

08/19/2017 - 12:23am Except that is SIX YEARS. I

Except that is SIX YEARS. I get it, free money yada yada yada, but who actually takes advantage of that and does something with that extra money to make it grow? Pretty much no one. The payment thing is a slow drip to poverty... All of your present money owed to past debts. Not a fun way to live. I decided to get out of that game. Paid of my nicer car, bought a cheap car, let the fiancee drive the nice car and sold her car (she was upside down on.... 72mo, got the gap insurance which only put her further in the hole).

I am on the "Dave Ramsey plan". I will admit, it is not for everyone (and I don't always agree with his investment advice and usage of a credit card), but outside of utility bills and mortgage every month, zero payments is pretty sweet.

08/18/2017 - 4:39pm Good point.
I bought the car

Good point.

I bought the car knowing it needed a lot of work and I did spend a considerable amount of time upfront working on it. Anyone with knowledge would have spent a quarter of the time, but I was learning. It's actually become now a fin hobby for me, so the cost of my time is negative (at least until I start having kids, no doubt).

Of course, as you get more skilled the amount of time required decreases.

08/18/2017 - 3:34pm Oigh. The depreciation charge

Oigh. The depreciation charge makes me sad on new vehicles. My 15yr old BMW with a little TLC has a stupid low cost per mile and is a great ride.

Learning to work on a car is the best thing I ever did. Saves tons of money and I never feel cheated by people I always feel cheated by (right or wrong).

07/11/2017 - 4:30pm Unverified Voracity

great summary of what is going on, written as only Brian can.

07/10/2017 - 11:52am Liability

I think liability is by far the biggest hinderance to the automated car dream. Who is responsible for a crash?

I hear the argument that an automated car does not need to produce zero deaths, just fewer than humans, in order to be allowed to take over driving duties for people, but I argue that more deaths where humans are responsible will be more acceptable than fewer deaths in which (presumably) the owner of the vehicle is at fault while having absolutely no control over the actions of the car. If the owner isn't at fault, who is? It is a lot of risk to take on.

Assisted driving will be much more fruitful, in my opinion. Not Tesla's autopilot that only allows more distractions to be introduced to the driver, but a digital co-pilot of sorts. I believe statistics show a (front-seat?) passenger actually reduces the chance of a crash as they are a second set of eyes. We need more of THAT tech. Lane detection, cross-traffic detection, red light/sudden stop detection. The car doesn't need to drive itself. The car needs to intervene when the driver is failing, DEFINITELY not vice versa (as with Tesla's Autopilot).

06/13/2017 - 12:55pm I don't have a timeline.

I don't have a timeline. There are too many variables... He isn't a dictator and is facing resistence just for being him. While his predecessor was happy to use his pen to get things done, we see how easily it is undone and I hope he doesn't go that route.

My measures would be meaningful changes to our healthcare system. ACA is failing miserably and only addressed insurance, not the cost of healthcare, which the two are only kind of related.

I would like to see some sort of movement on the debt. The last government doubled it (I don't know why no one talks about this), and so far I am not optimistic that anything will happen here. Unless...

Tax reform. The right tax cuts CAN help us get out of this GDP growth rut and start clawing at the debt from the other side.

More slashing of regulations where sensible. I think there is plenty to cut from the EPA.

06/13/2017 - 12:47pm You are making assumptions on

You are making assumptions on motivation with Comey. Keep in mind he was pretty universally disliked by both sides and by Comey's own admission he was not investigating Trump, so pretty sure that wasn't motivation.

06/13/2017 - 12:45pm I watch with cautious

I watch with cautious optimism... I voted him as the best alternative, but I definitely keep a close watch on things that are happening. It is hard to measure progress at this point because time takes time and the economy moves in cycles, the ENTIRE political establishment is against him (so I think he is still figuring out the carrot to motivate them to do something), and I am not even sure he has had all of his appointees approved yet.

The Paris accord ultimately means nothing because there were no teeth, but it does set a precedent and direction he plans to take, which is one that will hopefully save billions+ of tax payer dollars and numerous jobs.
