Guess he knew he had no chance next year?

I'm surprised he didn't want to compete for the job. Knowing Harbaugh's mindset, I'm sure JH doesn't mind someone, who doesn't want to compete, leaving.
November 26th, 2017 at 6:06 PM ^
Judging by timing this might be Harbaugh's decision.

i'm sure JH told WS that there will be competition. Maybe WS has allusions of the NFL and wants a guaranteed starting job somewhere. This potentially hurts. At worst he would be an experienced competent back up QB next year and provide depth at the position. I'm shocked really. Thought he would want to be a part of a potentially great football team next season instead of starting over in a new system somewhere.

Would have hurt if he stayed. Speight is not a Michigan starting caliber QB. Never was and never will be. Good luck to him. He should be in the MAC.

It's got to be health related. From what we have seen from Wilton Speight, he has never backed down from competition at Michigan. Back injuries suck, especially fractured vertebrae. Seems like a Ondre Pipkins situation where he thinks he can play but coaches or team doctors say no. Super hot take but seems a lot more realistic than he was told he'd have to compete so he transfers. He's competed every year he has been here.

I agree, Speight beat out those guys and won the job for a reason, and he was probably going to have the inside track at winning the job next Fall if healthy.

I questioned his willingness to compete. Thanks for putting words in my mouth.

As I noted, he competed and won a couple of jobs here. But sorry, I should not have presumed you cared if he won the job, only if he was willing to compete for it. Because most people enter competitions for the hell of it.

as you say. It's obvious Coach H. was upfront with him letting him know the future of the position. As such there is no need, even if he would be ready, to put himself in harm's way to play in a bowl game when the extra time off could serve him well in his recovery.
Wilton, we thank you for being a wolverine and a Michigan man. You will enjoy great things in your future. Even with the unfurling of the season last year you're still leaving with one hell of a record as the UM signal caller. Good luck young man.

If Malzone leaves too, UM could be thin again at QB next season.
Though I, for one, hold out hope that Joe Milton or Kevin Doyle as true freshmen could have hit Chris Evans on 4th down and/or one of the three receivers who were open on the INT.

Or
You dont have enough depth. College football is whackadoodle.

If Malzone couldn't see the field this year, I can't think of any situation where he'd play from here on out.

If this is how he wants to leave us then better that he go.
I don't think that's Jim though. Hope I'm right.

against decent teams. If he wins, he'll be ready with no jitters. If anyone else does, then they will be top notch having unseated the incumbent.
November 26th, 2017 at 8:08 PM ^
Doubt he's ready to start day 1.
Peters, McCaffrey & possibly a grad transfer to duke it out.
November 26th, 2017 at 8:51 PM ^
Why are we just assuming that Doyle won't be a factor? Isn't he killing it against tough competition right now? Sounds like he may be more likely to compete than Milton, day 1.

Can't U-M sign something where they could waive that year?
November 26th, 2017 at 6:20 PM ^
Deep TD to Darboh to beat Wisky
The PSU game
Awesome 1st half vs Maryland
Not letting his 1st pass (INT vs. Hawaii) ruin his career
Good luck and good health!

Don't forget the game winning drive plus huge 2 point conversion in relief of Rudock against Minnesota. Here's hoping Wilt gets healthy and has a great year wherever he goes.
November 26th, 2017 at 6:22 PM ^
First of all, good luck, Wilton! Thanks for all your hard work at Michigan! Second... thank god I don't have to listen to any more debates over whether he's any good or not, or whether his troubles were injury, or the offensive line, or play calling, or blah, or blah, or blah.

And I think he's good enough to make an NFL roster. He's not a high draft pick or anything like that, but given his size and history of playing in an NFL style offense, I could see him being on an NFL roster in 2019.

he's obviously transferring to play more football

Turns out with the Michigan OL he didn't stand a chance this year. Transfering is a smart business decision on his part.
