I mean, if State tells a current player "thanks, but no thanks", red flags abound, no?
November 8th, 2017 at 7:35 AM ^
I'm pretty sure he just didn't show up to practice? Not certain, but what I had read made it seem like there wasn't anything stopping him from being there. Yeah, that's what I meant above when I said personal history doesn't make sense here. If even Mork is telling a kid to stay away then it's probably best to leave him to another program.
November 8th, 2017 at 10:51 AM ^
Remember kids, two sides to every story. There is a descent chance that the kid didn't want to be around Mork and that program anymore no? Yeah, keep an open mind sometimes player!

was not due to a "driving" issue.

That was a very disillusioned and fragmented lockerroom by the end of last season. He probably just soured on the place.
November 8th, 2017 at 6:56 AM ^
There’s a 6’8” JUCO OT Badara Traore who would make more sense, if we are dipping into the JUCO pool.
November 8th, 2017 at 11:02 AM ^
were to go pro it would leave us a little thin at DE behind Rashan. There could also be a backup DE that has told the coaching staff he intends to transfer. Paye and Kemp are promising but if you have a chance to add a guy like Peat, who has offers from Alabama, USC, and Oklahoma, you need to take it. Peat will sign somewhere next month and be around for spring practices.
November 8th, 2017 at 11:33 AM ^
Well you're talking about different positions here. Peat would certainly be an anchor (maybe even a 3T one day), not an end (i.e. would be behind Kemp not Winovich/Paye/Vilain). Also, I don't think Winovich is thinking about going to the draft too. Just seems like a guy who loves college and Michigan and would rather do another round with Rashan and a great team. He would probably be a 3rd or 4th round pick this year? Maybe 5th? And could put himself solidly in the 2nd to lower 1st discussion with another year.
My point: Peat is not for sure coming in at a position where we are for sure losing a guy and have shakey depth. Our DL recruiting has been stellar, and he's not a talent that would start immediately at 3T or End, should Chase decide to go early.
November 8th, 2017 at 7:38 PM ^
He is a DE. I doubt Chase goes pro, but you never know, this is his 4th year and he would get drafted. Its all moot though, almost no chance Peat ends up here. Like you said he would be in a competition for playing time and may want to go somewhere with a clearer shot at starting.
November 9th, 2017 at 9:20 AM ^
His 247 page lists him at 260. None of our current Ends (as opposed to Anchors) have come in at over 240. But yes, this is moot because he won't be at Michigan next year.

The jersey in the picture indicated the team is "The Artichokes."
That may be the first time I've seen a team name that was a plant rather than an animal or a thing.
Years ago I lived in Cary, NC ... at that time (perhaps still) the HS team was "The Imps." That struck me as a rather uninspiring name.
November 8th, 2017 at 7:34 AM ^
Did it live up to its "Containment Area for Relocated Yankees" reputation?
November 8th, 2017 at 9:18 AM ^
I lived there 1984-1989. A lot has changed since then. I was there last year on business and I hardly recognized the place.
November 8th, 2017 at 2:27 PM ^
And your answer is yes
November 8th, 2017 at 7:36 AM ^
Maybe the Marauding Imps or Thundering Imps would have been more impressive sounding.
November 8th, 2017 at 7:39 AM ^
Do you even Harbaugh bro?
Stanford Cardinal = plant
(Also Ohio State...)
November 8th, 2017 at 7:42 AM ^
Stanford's name is "cardinal," which is a bird; the mascot is a tree. That's a little like Alabama with "Crimson Tide" (a kind of algae, I guess) and their mascot is an elephant.
But you're absolutely right about the Buckeyes. I guess my hatred burns too bright to have spotted that one. :-)
November 8th, 2017 at 7:48 AM ^
Their team name has nothing to do with the bird. It's the color "cardinal" as in "cardinal red". They used to have a Native American nickname, but dropped it in the 70s. Then they became the "Cardinals" but it was still a reference to the color, not the bird. They considered multiple other nicknames, but ended up landing on "Cardinal" in the singular form, which sounds odd still.
November 8th, 2017 at 10:59 AM ^
Dartmouth also began its athletic life as "the Indians," but when that name became politically incorrect in the 70s, Dartmouth became "the Big Green," which incorporated one of its green-and-white school colors. Certainly sounds better than "the Big White," and also avoids any inevtiable ethnic connotations were "white" chosen instead :>).
November 8th, 2017 at 2:36 PM ^
I thought they were named after a kind of sin. That would be much cooler... and very Stanfordy.
November 9th, 2017 at 9:22 AM ^
If I were you, I'd just pretend I didn't hear anything about that color nonsense and stick with your reasoning. It is much cooler.

November 8th, 2017 at 11:33 AM ^
you know...
November 8th, 2017 at 11:57 AM ^
I knew I recalled something about algae ...
November 8th, 2017 at 7:44 AM ^
November 8th, 2017 at 7:46 AM ^
"The Cardinal" is a giant redwood on the campus, I believe. Also one of the few team names used in the singular.
November 8th, 2017 at 7:59 AM ^
Cal Bear fans make sure to say Cardinals.
November 8th, 2017 at 8:01 AM ^
SpaceCoyote's got this one covered - the Cardinal is simply a shout-out to one of the school colors*. The tree is "el Palo Alto" - namesake of the town. Here's the scoop:
http://www.gostanford.com/sports/2013/4/17/208445366.aspx
(Thankfully they did not go for the other color, which is simply "White".)
November 8th, 2017 at 10:12 AM ^
November 8th, 2017 at 11:45 AM ^
My basic premise is that Stanford is in "Palo Alto".
Your Google Translate exercise may have lead you to believe that this means that Stanford is in a tree or a stick. It's not. Stanford is in a city named after a tall tree.
November 9th, 2017 at 7:37 AM ^
All I know is, in a city of the future it is difficult to concentrate.
November 8th, 2017 at 10:23 AM ^
The Stanford White.
Yeah, I think they made the right call on the color. But just how epically charged would that have been?
November 8th, 2017 at 11:47 AM ^
Worse yet, Dan Snyder would have tried to buy the school.
November 8th, 2017 at 12:03 PM ^
That DO NOT reference a color (e.g., Crimson Tide, Cardinal, Green Wave, Mean Green, or Orangemen excepted):
NC State Wolfpack; Nevada Wolfpack; Navy Midshipmen; Illiniois Fighting Illini; Notre Dame Fighting Irish; Massachusetts Minutemen; Marshall Thundering Herd
Let me know if I missed any.
November 8th, 2017 at 12:39 PM ^
In terms of Minutemen and Midshipmen, those are both pluralities. The s may be missing but the name still referring to a plurality.
Even Wolfpack and Thundering Herd are subject to debate.
November 8th, 2017 at 12:31 PM ^
Just because a word doesn't end in "s" doesn't make it singular...
November 8th, 2017 at 12:46 PM ^
Hastily written. Should be nicknames that don't end in S or contain a color.
MGoAccuracy appreciated. Downvoted myself.

Maple Leafs
November 8th, 2017 at 10:50 AM ^
My youngest daughter went to the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham (yes, I'm bragging on her--it's a tough school to get into). They were the Unicorns. I suggested they go with "The Thundering Nerd". Somehow, the suggestion was not well-received.

@DonAZ
You are aware that the Scottsdale Community College football team is called the Artichokes, yes?
November 8th, 2017 at 11:37 AM ^
I live down in Tucson, so I'm not familiar with Scottsdale CC. I did not know about them being called the Artichokes until I clicked on the link in the OP and saw the Twitter profile picture with the football jersey and the name. Perfectly fine name, just not one I'd seen before. And as others have pointed out, other "plant" names exist -- Buckeyes, Maple Leafs, Shamrocks. Artichokes are in the thistle family ... I wonder if there's a team named the "Thistles"?
November 8th, 2017 at 11:25 AM ^
Birmingham Seaholm are the Maples. I think the old Royal Oak HS were the Oaks. Also Detroit Catholic Central are the Shamrocks.
November 8th, 2017 at 12:16 PM ^
ROHS (The Ravens) was created when Dondero (The Oaks) and Kimball (The Knights) were merged. Dondero was converted into a middle school.
November 8th, 2017 at 2:08 PM ^
My daughter will likely be a Seaholm Maple next fall.
