Umm.... Bosa has had 17.5 sacks in 29 career games... compared to Gary's 8 in 30 career games....and also more than Winovich's 16.5 in 33 games (excluding 2 games Chase played as a Sophomore).
I would say we are all very happy with the Chase / Rashan combination, but Bosa's production is on another level.
And BTW, PFF had him as their top rated returning player in all of college football (Gary didn't make the top 50). I say this not as a knock on Rashan, but just a further illustration that there situations were not / are not the same

|10/17/2018 - 5:10pm||Hypothetical -- if we were…||
Hypothetical -- if we were to play Wisconsin again this year and we have no Rashan, what should the strategy be?
I would prefer to see a heavy dose of Solomon and Mone on the inside and consider kicking Kemp back out to the SDE spot. I know Paye held up relatively well and there are other options, but I think part of that was driven by Chryst's ineptitude as a game manager more than anything else.
|10/17/2018 - 5:06pm||Not to be that guy, but…||
Not to be that guy, but Rashan's father is not very active in his life so I doubt he is telling him a god-damn thing.
Also, Bosa's situation is different than Gary's. Bosa is consensus top 3 pick and has had insane production at OSU. Gary's draft position has a lot more variance and thus could be improved by more demonstrated production.
Finally, it's one thing to sit out a meaningless bowl game to preserve health (i.e. McCaffrey, Fournette, etc.) - it's another to sit out the remaining 2/3rds of your junior year. If that is a viable strategy, then he probably should have just sat out the whole year as his draft status is probably about the same (maybe even worse) than it was entering the year.

You only have 4 years of eligibility, regardless of where they are played. If he plays more than 4 games this year (i.e. does not take a redshirt), then he would not be able to play for any college again ever

So playing football is the same as studying now... give me a break.
BTW, if that law student or engineer or any other student came out with a market viable product from their work (an invention, an app, a startup), there would be no bullshit about them not getting paid and they should be happy with a scholarship or class credit as compensation. I guess you don't see a double standard in that.
BTW, it's fine if you would prefer to watch Yale-Harvard vs. Packers-Bears, in fact, I may agree with you on that point. But clearly there is a reason why the NFL and big time college football are worth billions of dollars annually and Ivy League football is not. My preferences (or yours) should play no factor in whether student athletes should be able to be paid

|09/18/2018 - 6:51pm||Yes, it seems to work in…||
Yes, it seems to work in almost every other part of the global economy, but I can see your totally valid concern that paying people for the labor they provide would be more than our delicate society can take...
|09/18/2018 - 6:47pm||So what if they are lucky to…||
So what if they are lucky to be where they are. You could argue that the majority of the American workforce is incredibly lucky to be where they are -- but I don't here people arguing that they should not be paid for their labor due to that fact.
People love to suspend their principles (for example, you seem to be a fan of free markets), when it becomes inconvenient. I'm glad you "want this fight" - it would be nice if you had an argument other than - 1) I don't like it and 2) the student athletes are lucky / fortunate, therefore, they should be grateful for whatever they are given

|09/18/2018 - 5:37pm||"I love college football and…||
"I love college football and basketball, but they become less fun for me in a direct relationship to the increase in money. Adding more money into the system and paying players make college sports less attractive to me. I've never had any interest in minor league sports."
Umm what?? The money is already in the system and the NCAA, Conferences, Coaches, Bowl Administrators, and many others are paid quite handsomely for the work they do / do not complete.
So your argument boils down to - "If these 18 -22 year-olds, who are laboring and sacrificing to put out a product I already 'love', start getting a share of the money I already pay to watch the product they produce - I will become less attracted to said product."

Yes, but that's also a joke.
UM's endowment is $10.9B - the annual return on that (assuming a very conservative 5%) is $545M. There is plenty of money to pay for almost all students accepted to go to school for free, but yet that is not the way the system works.

I think what Brian is getting at, is that there is a difference between 1) employing or even turning a blind eye to bagmen and 2) creating and defending an exploitative culture that has no regards for players, students and families so long as a dollar is made (no hyperbole to say a culture of rape and death)
The former we can all shrug our shoulders and move on with life. The latter is a fucking problem

I think it is you that doesn't understand the terms you are using.
First, your statement seems to apply that Brian (whom BTW, I doubt very much reads every stupid comment / thread on this board) "ascribes" to a certain brand of politics and then that he only enforces the no politics rule against that particular brand of politics -- um ok. Probably not the point you are trying to make, but the point you appear to be making nonetheless.
Second, you claim there is a double standard -- I call out that there is not a double standard just because you don't like the standard. You offer no evidence of said double standard, then claim that I don't understand the term.
You are correct - with logic like that, we really can't have much of a debate.

Yes it is, especially with so much at stake. Most people are of the belief that the next supreme court justice will be somebody who works against the following causes / interests: women's rights, women's reproductive rights, rights of minorities, rights of immigrants, collective bargaining rights, reform of political gerrymandering, and many other topics. Whether they have an impact on all of these items remains to be seen, but that is a widely help perception.
But I'm supposed to be happy because they're from Michigan and went to the same university as I did. Give me a fucking break

Just because you do not agree with "the standard" with which moderators edit and/or remove board posts does not make it a "double standard". So yes I will debate the presence of a double standard.

Never understood why teams don't rotate OL more frequently. I wouldn't mind seeing the mashers (i.e., JBB, Onwenu) get the lion's share of the work and then change it up with pass pro specialists (i.e., Spanellis, Runyan) on clear passing downs. This assumes, that the pass pro from the mashers is not so terrible that we cannot run simple pass plays / play-action on 1st and 2nd downs.
