I'm pretty sure he just didn't show up to practice? Not certain, but what I had read made it seem like there wasn't anything stopping him from being there. Yeah, that's what I meant above when I said personal history doesn't make sense here. If even Mork is telling a kid to stay away then it's probably best to leave him to another program.

"Missed practices" If I recall correctly, he quit the team in fall camp last year. And then was going to re-join the team in Spring ball, but the coaching staff told him no. It was around the time that the recruiting coordinator guy was catching all the heat for the legal stuff, so I'm wondering if he was the driver for him returning And the coaching staff put the brakes on that.

were to go pro it would leave us a little thin at DE behind Rashan. There could also be a backup DE that has told the coaching staff he intends to transfer. Paye and Kemp are promising but if you have a chance to add a guy like Peat, who has offers from Alabama, USC, and Oklahoma, you need to take it. Peat will sign somewhere next month and be around for spring practices.

Well you're talking about different positions here. Peat would certainly be an anchor (maybe even a 3T one day), not an end (i.e. would be behind Kemp not Winovich/Paye/Vilain). Also, I don't think Winovich is thinking about going to the draft too. Just seems like a guy who loves college and Michigan and would rather do another round with Rashan and a great team. He would probably be a 3rd or 4th round pick this year? Maybe 5th? And could put himself solidly in the 2nd to lower 1st discussion with another year.

My point: Peat is not for sure coming in at a position where we are for sure losing a guy and have shakey depth. Our DL recruiting has been stellar, and he's not a talent that would start immediately at 3T or End, should Chase decide to go early.

He is a DE. I doubt Chase goes pro, but you never know, this is his 4th year and he would get drafted. Its all moot though, almost no chance Peat ends up here. Like you said he would be in a competition for playing time and may want to go somewhere with a clearer shot at starting.

The jersey in the picture indicated the team is "The Artichokes."

That may be the first time I've seen a team name that was a plant rather than an animal or a thing.

Years ago I lived in Cary, NC ... at that time (perhaps still) the HS team was "The Imps."  That struck me as a rather uninspiring name.

Stanford's name is "cardinal," which is a bird; the mascot is a tree.  That's a little like Alabama with "Crimson Tide" (a kind of algae, I guess) and their mascot is an elephant.

But you're absolutely right about the Buckeyes.  I guess my hatred burns too bright to have spotted that one. :-)

Their team name has nothing to do with the bird. It's the color "cardinal" as in "cardinal red". They used to have a Native American nickname, but dropped it in the 70s. Then they became the "Cardinals" but it was still a reference to the color, not the bird. They considered multiple other nicknames, but ended up landing on "Cardinal" in the singular form, which sounds odd still.

Dartmouth also began its athletic life as "the Indians," but when that name became politically incorrect in the 70s, Dartmouth became "the Big Green," which incorporated one of its green-and-white school colors. Certainly sounds better than "the Big White," and also avoids any inevtiable ethnic connotations were "white" chosen instead :>).

My basic premise is that Stanford is in "Palo Alto".

Your Google Translate exercise may have lead you to believe that this means that Stanford is in a tree or a stick.  It's not.  Stanford is in a city named after a tall tree.

My youngest daughter went to the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham (yes, I'm bragging on her--it's a tough school to get into). They were the Unicorns. I suggested they go with "The Thundering Nerd". Somehow, the suggestion was not well-received.

I live down in Tucson, so I'm not familiar with Scottsdale CC.  I did not know about them being called the Artichokes until I clicked on the link in the OP and saw the Twitter profile picture with the football jersey and the name.  Perfectly fine name, just not one I'd seen before. And as others have pointed out, other "plant" names exist -- Buckeyes, Maple Leafs, Shamrocks.  Artichokes are in the thistle family ... I wonder if there's a team named the "Thistles"?
