I don't know, Speight just doesn't pass the eye test when he throws. He just seems too stiff and rigid on a lot of his throws. He's a guy that will keep us in the top 25, but I don't see us being elite with him. I chalked up his performance last week to a good Florida D, but I've got nothing now.

I just think everyone puts too much emphasis on his failings when the entire offense is playing poorly. Other than Isaac and maybe Perry, I didn't think any skill player was particularly good today. Seemed like receivers couldn't get open, couple drops, and the offensive line repeatedly got beaten by an undersized but fast Cincy front 7. Speight could play better and must, but I'm way more worried about the right side of the offensive line than him. I'm also worried they don't have anything approximating a consistent #1 receiver except Perry, and that's not a recipe for a dynamic offense.

Simply looks like an offense comprised almost entirely of freshman and sophomores. Peaks of potential, but lots of hesitation, dumb mistakes, and an overall lack of refinement and polish.
September 9th, 2017 at 7:17 PM ^
Yep. It really is an extremely young team, especially offensively. There were plays where you could tell someone probably ran the wrong route, as Speight was talking to a couple of guys after plays. It's a growing experience for everyone; I'd rather they have a stinker like this against Cincy than against PSU.

The hint of pressure caused Speight's mechanics to fall apart. He was locking on to receivers and throwing into double coverage. He missed wide open receivers. The O line was giving him all kinds of time.
He's not good.

I saw a different game on my TV. The line held up at times, but Cincy was able to get pressure with 4 usually, which forced some bad throws into coverage. And Speight needs better decision making, absolutely, but other than Isaac the team couldn't get going on the ground and I didn't see consistent separation by the receivers on some mediocre DBs. And that's an extension of last week, when guys weren't getting open or holding onto the good throws Speight did make, which amplified the bad ones he made as well.
I think it's telling that other than Isaac, both Evans and Higdon averaged under 3 ypc against a bad front 7.

It did have shades of that, but I don't think this was as bad as Akron and UMass. Those two teams had Michigan on the ropes while this game felt like it was more of Michigan's own errors rather than a bad team pushing us.

Ty looking good. An ascending player. Good to see him doing this back to back games. I'm sure I'm not the only one who had mostly written him off

We're going to live and die by the performance of an average-ish QB.

Grant Perry. Great TD, but really liked the obvious handing of the ball to the ref.
Ty Isaac is the man.
Everything else sucked this game.

Once again, Speight isnt a great QB, or even a very good one, but the coach's know he is the best game-ready QB we have right now. Which will likely cost us a game or two.

So how many games do you think the offensive line will cost this team?
I am beyond tired of this lazy logic that every time the offense struggles it's because the QB is terrible. it was the same BS people trotted out when Rudock struggled early on, then it all flipped on it's head when Chesson emerged and Rudock got more comfortable in the offense.
This is an offense with basically no returning receivers (save Perry) and more than half of a new offensive line. But no, it's all the QB's fault.

He was hit quite a bit considering the opponent. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I remember him being sacked at least once and getting hit or having to scramble early into his progression a half-dozen times.
The line was fine. Yes, when they blocked well they got push, which is usually the case for any team. But there were far too many times when the line failed to pick up linebackers in the second level or handle pressure at the edges.
September 9th, 2017 at 4:55 PM ^
Chill dude. My logic is not as lazy as you claim. Speight's problems are primarily his decison-making, even when he has protection, and accuracy - his tenendency to overthrow balls, even when has has protection. I would energentically rationalize that those faults are more on him than the OL.
September 9th, 2017 at 7:14 PM ^
He completed 60% of his passes for 2 TDs and about 7.6 ypc. That's a pretty good stat line. And I'm not saying he had a great game. But your argument is that he isn't a great or very good QB and didn't provide any additional context. I take issue with that, since it comes across as a comment without substance, a "back in my day" type that has this mythical "great" QB that probably never existed.
September 10th, 2017 at 10:15 AM ^
I think you're painting in some pretty broad strokes.
Sometimes it's the OL's fault, sometimes the QB's fault, sometimes a bit of both.
The question is how many times it's the OL vs. the QB vs. someone else.
Lately, we've seen too many instances where it's the QB's fault.
September 9th, 2017 at 3:44 PM ^
The best possible scenario is that we knew we could move the ball easily enough getting Isaac in space so we tried to work on stuff that we weren't as good at, but found out that there's... a lot we're not good at.
Wilton is what he is, either he works through the mistakes or he doesn't. Still a lot of season left, but... I wouldn't want to be the team at practice Monday morning.

I'm glad he didn't risk getting hurt just to beat Cincinnati by 29 or 36 instead of 22.
