07/02/2018 - 2:41pm I live in Detroit and have…

I live in Detroit and have for about 5 years now

Pros: 1.Cheap houses. My home is free and clear even though I am under 30. I also own a few rentals that allow me to actually make money even after factoring taxes, insurance, loan cost, and annual upkeep.

2. Ability to see your impact. I've watched the downtown area change dramatically since I have lived here, and the neighborhood has been changing rapidly as well. My friends have been able to open business and thrive that would have been 100% impossible other places

3. Less concern over minor legal things like speeding, having a joint on you, stupid permits. I have had some rip-roaring bonfires and no one calls the cops on me like they would if I lived in a place like Grosse Pointe. I can play my music loud and I don't get noise violations (btw A2 might be worst of all time with noise violations). I don't feel like I am going to get pulled over and hassled for being a younger guy like I do whenever I am in Oakland county.

4. Close to tons of events. I'm a big sports fan and music fan. Detroit is great for sporting events obviously and I love Techno music the most, so being by multiple clubs that actually play it is great for me.

5. Sort of linked to #4. I like to party and have a drink. Detroit has a new bar opening seemingly every week. They all want to be local places serving local beer. I just checked out Eastern Market Brewing Co the other weekend after leaving Detroit City Distillery and loved it. Can't believe I hadn't been before

Cons: 1. Potential for crime. My area is pretty safe, but if you drive a little bit it isn't super nice. Decent amount of abandonment and squatters. I've heard of some break-ins a few streets over. I've never had any issues.

2. Explaining to people that Detroit isn't that bad when they give me the crazy look.

3. City is full of pockets. I have a few grocery stores near my house that are great(Kroger, Trader Joes, local market) all 5 min away or less. However, when I lived downtown, it was a pain in the ass to go shopping. No grocery stores anywhere. I know this is an issue for lots of folks depending where you live in the city

4. Car insurance. If I didn't have a perfect driving record with spotless credit I shudder to think what I'd pay. As it stands I at about $2,500 a year for a 2017 Fusion

5. Dealing with city services. The city can be super dumb and you have to stay on top of things. Shit is routinely lost, city employees telling you two different things, etc. I keep good records and I am borderline OCD with ensuring things are paid with no issues. This can lead me to waste time, but has never caused me major distress.

I love the city. The things that aren't so good are getting better. I am fully on my way to living the life I wanted to live before I even went to college. It would not have been possible in any other city. If I had bounced to Chicago like many of my friends, I know financially my life would be completely different. 100k in Detroit vs 100k in Chicago is the difference between night and day on what it gets you.

03/25/2018 - 6:46pm sell

Sell alcohol at all large sporting events, college or pro. It makes money and reduces risky drinking behavior. Also legalize all drugs for the same reason. I guess that is a different OT thread tho..

03/25/2018 - 1:11pm if...

Charles Matthews entering the NBA draft would be good for us because the only way that would happen i if he continues to play great and we win the NC. I always want all the players to leave early and get paid, but given how much Wagner and Matthews have improved it is hard to not imagine them sticking around. They got to believe with a little more improvement they are top picks. Imagine if Simpson can improve his shooting in a similar trajectory to MAAR by his sr year...

I'm excited about this team in the near future and next season...

02/03/2018 - 8:49pm Hash Bash...

I didn't mind hash bash so much when I worked a restauraunt right in the thick of it. The clients tipped well, you just had to remember what they ordered for them. It is a very funny collection of people. The throng of high schoolers thinking they're so cool, downriver folk with barbed wire tattoos. Old heads with dreads and lots of random missing teeth... Fun times. My favorite were the people who are "about that life" but you could tell didn't smoke often (people who work jobs that drug test, dad's who settled down but still think they can party, etc).

If I was a parent and I took my kid to Michigan for a high level athletic scholarship opportunity and saw how "high level" the city could be I may end up steering my kid somewhere else, because kids a dumb and do dumb things. I however would not make any comments to people that this was my root of my convern for the very reason we are laughing at them right now. Never underestimate your child's ability to make you look dumb

01/08/2018 - 9:41pm theory

My theory is that we all neg each other so much because the constant pain football season brings has jaded everyone into being the internet equivilent of grumpy old men. This site is also full of people who think they are funny. I often neg people who have a ton of upvotes and upvote people getting negged to death. The mob rule of this site can be funny but it also wears on you. Contrarian viewpoints should be welcomed, not attacked.

12/07/2017 - 1:22pm Lol

Logged in just to mock the op. He doesn't just get results...This would be one of the only instances he has delivered on at all. How those production goals going? Estimating 3k and get 300. He made this happen because he had 50 million reasons. Keep drinking the koolaide. They can't compete with big auto. They don't have the infrastructure and have shown. I ability to get it up and running. Musk is smart and the products are good but you need to make money eventually. The stock price is a joke

12/02/2017 - 1:00pm nice

this is looking good so far. Happy to see the effort is high after the last game. All the young kids stepping up. Will this team end up as the best defense of Beilein era? Feels that way to me

12/02/2017 - 12:54pm Detroit

I'm an unabashed Detroit homer. Move it to Detroit.

11/29/2017 - 8:52pm ...

Does anyone remember when Duncan missed the lay-up to make it 34-34 momentum Michigan? I do... The team will get stronger and be good later in the season. I can see it. I just don't understand why Beilein teams have a tendency to do this. It hurts to watch.

11/29/2017 - 8:50pm omg

It is literally getting worse. I put on the pistons for a little ray of sunshine in my life and I don't even really care about them. At least a team I care about is winning at anything...

11/29/2017 - 8:42pm Life is

pain

Why must it always be pain?

11/29/2017 - 10:15am not a lawyer

but I do know enough to say that if they are expanding the class size it is a bad sign for the collegs. Usually the first thing lawyers will try to do is make the class as small as possible or better yet proove there is no class and make it a personal lawsuit. If the class is expanding I would take that as a good sign for Spielman's case.

11/20/2017 - 11:10pm ...

That's what they want you to believe..

11/20/2017 - 11:05pm wtf

I hate everything now

11/20/2017 - 11:03pm Same question. Came here for

Same question. Came here for answers!

11/14/2017 - 10:19am wrong

You would assume wrong. Taxes and insurance are high in Detroit, but not that high once you factor in what you save on everything else. I drive a 2017 Lincoln MKZ and pay $2100 a year. This is with good credit and no tickets etc. Not ideal. I bought my home for 60k and pay $1100 a year on taxes. So $3,200. If you sold your home in the burbs and moved to Detroit you could buy a house here cash or at the very least be paying way less per month on a loan. Moving to Detroit was the best financial move I've ever made.

09/15/2017 - 9:07pm ...

Short's spacerock. First time having it. I guess it is a gluten reduced beer whatever the fuck that means. I bought it for the name and the never had it qualities. It is good. The head is very weird tho

09/09/2017 - 8:19pm yea

but that isn't my point.

The solid play of Shane merely gave me a fortuitous opportunity to make a joke about a certain segment of our fan base

09/09/2017 - 7:45pm ...

markusr2007 doesn't get the joke I was making. Sad.

09/09/2017 - 7:43pm ...

all kidding aside i'm just watching the game and he looks good. As any reasonably obsessed fan I followed his recruitment all the way up until now. It is fun seeing local kids do good things for local teams. Thought others would feel the same way.

09/09/2017 - 7:39pm but...

he would be if it weren't for Harbaugh QB politics!!

09/09/2017 - 3:43pm Isaac

Ty looking good. An ascending player. Good to see him doing this back to back games. I'm sure I'm not the only one who had mostly written him off

08/19/2017 - 11:52pm ...

I have up voted you like 15 times somewittyname. I feel where you're coming from. However this is a message board of fans. To be a "fan" means you are suspending some part of rationale in order to be optimistic about some arbitrary game. Pointing this out causes pain. People react. Negbang commence

08/16/2017 - 10:05pm makes sense

if you don't think about it too hard

08/11/2017 - 10:04pm thank you

for posting this

08/08/2017 - 8:41pm ...

I don't think this is a result of "recent" troubles. There has definitely been a long brain drain from Michigan starting 30+ years ago.

08/03/2017 - 4:42pm duh

history of western philosophy

07/24/2017 - 9:25pm Love it

I agree 100%. Although to be fair my basketball sense must be off. I was convinced we would be elite with Caris coming back for his senior year. I have always been a huge Beilein fanboy, but even I almost gave up on him this past year. I'm fired up about Matthews, but I was also pretty pumped when we got Laval Lucas-Perry.

07/16/2017 - 11:58am vacation time

Who expects all this vacation time when you have a high paying high pressure job? Doctors, lawyers, investment bankers... Pretty sure those guys aren't getting a month off every year just because. Most professionals who make 100k+ a year have to work a lot and willingly do it to earn a decent living. When I hear these coaches talking about vacation it pisses me off. I would gladly work 7 days a week 10 hours a day to get paid 5 million annually. Especially if it was as a football coach. I'm assuming for every single head coach it is essentially their dream job. Maybe not the location, but the position itself. I work 60 hours a week at a job I only enjoy sometimes to make a fraction of what these guys make and I don't bitch about the hours. Because to me it is worth it. Maybe these guys should just find a new profession if it is so hard...

07/08/2017 - 8:20pm WichitanWolverine

Lack of reading comprehension makes you get snarky on the internet? That's almost as unfortunate as your custom logo.

07/08/2017 - 1:16pm I started

going through the Rich Rod years to test how badly I do this and at first blush I didn't remember hardly anything. Start looking through the details...all came back. I think I have a tiny bit more appreciation for what PTSD is and how painful it must be.

07/08/2017 - 1:15pm Personally

If you are artistically inclined I would say community. I have never met a community kid who wasn't a pleasure to jam with. Maybe they don't have the offical "band" or w/e but in my experience growing as a musician is more about who you surround yourself and what you do. I believe community is the best for that.

07/08/2017 - 12:20pm community

Just go to community. Ten years from now you'll be drinking a PBR with all your other townie buddies at the blind pig and thank me. I think you need to enter a raffle or something tho? That may have changed. They are all pretty good tho and have pros and cons. Do you have any specific interests or play any sports?

06/07/2017 - 10:10pm I laughed

because it was so bad. So there's that.

06/03/2017 - 6:15pm no

it does not

05/26/2017 - 9:21pm easy to find

Tenants are easy to find. Good tenants are hard to find. If you are looking for a revenue source with consistent returns there are so many variables to consider. It is easier once you scale up but then it becomes a full time job if you want to do it right. As a landlord myself I wish you good luck.

05/06/2017 - 12:50pm good opportunity

I went to one of these and got a few lower level college offers. Your d3's like albion, kalamazoo college, etc. I chose to go the university route and party in Ann Arbor. I wasn't cut out for the college athlete life and I had no future prospects as a catcher under 5'10 with no real power. Slap hitter all day and not very fast.

These places just run you through al the testing and it sounds like your son coudl easily grow into a reasonably powerful thrower if he started a proper trainign regime. Few high schoolers are throwing 90. If you are throwing mid 80's with a frame you get developed then start throwing 90's. The better the grades the mor eopportunity he will find because there are less cholarships in baseball so if they can find a way to give him some academic aid to offset cost that helps.

He can play college baseball if he wants with what he is doing right now. It just depends on how bad he wants it. A buddy of mine played at Michigan tech as a 2yr starter for their team and he was a bench player in high school. At the lower levels d2/d3 etc so much of it is based on if you want to do it and commit to the grind.

03/27/2017 - 12:37pm thank you

for this. I am still holding out hope. This is why I love sports. You can believe the unbelieveable is possible until proven otherwise.

03/20/2017 - 11:41am BUMP

Does anyone think that the early exit of Duke coupled with all the headlines we've been making changes the outlook? It sure feels to me that everyone in the media wants Michigan to win so they can write an op-ed about the crash and bringing the team together. Bet Mitch Albom already has a catchy headline on a piece of paper somehwere. Maybe I'm just reading too much into our current success and hoping some how it will bleed into his recruitment. I can not even imagine what we could do here. Seems like Wagner and Wilson going off and upping their draft value can't hurt?

03/19/2017 - 12:37pm fouls

We need to keep driving and get some of these guys in foul trouble!
