OT: Letter to Kevin Sumlin after A&M's Loss to UCLA

Submitted by FauxMo on

There are idiots like this in every fan base, I know. I even recall some of the horribly racist letters the Fab Five received from so-called "Michigan fans." But this is pretty over the top, both racist and threatening violence. Here is the content of the letter, editing out the obvious worst part:

“You suck as a coach! You’re a n—– and can’t win! Please get lost! Or else.”

Hey folks, we all love football. But it's a game, played by kids young men. Let's cut this shit out.

Probably!

I mean, it's one thing to say that it is conceivable that Sumlin or his wife would do something like this. But you're actually saying that it is probable--like, more likely than not!--that it is a fake. I don't know if you mean Sumlin or his wife faked it, or some unknown person who is pursuing "the agenda of the elites," whatever that means. But that's more plausible to you than the possibility that some racist, angry person sent it to make Sumlin feel bad.

I think we view the world pretty differently.

a death threat, or any other number of despicable comments, towards Wilton Speight after having a rough game against Florida.

People need to get a grip.

talking about how John Navarre had all sorts of threats (as did his parents!). One guy brought his son with him to John's campus house and berated Navarre saying he wished he never went to UM and more..

What the hell is wrong with people?!! in all fan bases?!!

I have pondered several ways I could address this; social media and a platform where you ask the public questions means they should be addressed.

First, the tweet's content; "people of 2017," as if this would have been morally acceptible in 1905? or will once again be acceptible in 2065? The year that the letter is written is unimportant as the letter should not exist. This brief note should have never been conceived regardless of the year.

"Please tell me how any part of this ok?" None of it is, ever! Sumlin just experienced a crushing day at the office. His team which makes up 100+ student athletes just experienced a humilating defeat that they will have to re-live for years to come. Michigan fans are quite understanding of this as we have to see replays of Colorado in 1994 once or twice a year. The coach had to deal with a frustrated and vocal board member. All of this is crushing enough, no coach needs a fan pouring it on in a disgustingly morally repugnant way. Wonder if the writer ever experienced a bad day and what was the response of others? College football is still just a game played by amatuer athletes who are prone to error.

"To the sender: did it occur to you that a child may open it?" The sender lacking in morals and decency would not be concerned who opened the letter. They will feel zero remorse for who reads it just as they felt zero remorse for writing it. The whole point of the letter is to cause anxiety for the recipient.

"Or else what?" Nothing. The person who wrote this surprisingly enough has not violated any laws. A person must threaten bodily harm in order for law enforcement to take the threat seriously. Still it takes little effort to forge an address and send a startling letter. Odds are zero that this person will do anything. The writer has major problems of his/her own that has lead to the conclusion that attempting to jar a person they do not know is acceptable.

One letter like this is too many, I hope for a world were this does not exist for right now if it is the only letter he received of this nature after such a jaw dropping loss then we have improved in society. I am doubtful we will move beyond the point of no issues with harm, crime, or racism but we should keep striving. I see much more of this going on random twitter feeds and youtube comments, would be nice if we did not treat each other so cruelly especially when it comes to non-essential aspects of life such as a football game.

Glad I live in an era where Kevin Sumlin can be employed at a major university; makes what he does; and commands the respect of all his student athletes. His talent and experience earned him the job at Texas A&M and now he is a celebrity. I expect him, his family, and his team to bounce back while we as a society attempt to take one more step forward in improving our behavior and our relationships man-to-man.

There's assholes like this in every fanbase.

Rashan Gary got threats from Clemson fans during his recruitment process. Gardner got that shit during his time as QB here. You can bet that if Barrett cost OSU a couple of games, there would be a degenerate or two in the OSU fanbase who would be sending him threats. It happens everywhere.

It's going to be even more prevalent down south, where a sizable portion of fans, alums and boosters of any big program are "good ol' boys" who believe some things ought to go back to the way they used to be. That's not indicative of the fanbase as a whole, but it's definitely more common in those parts of the country.

Odd that it has a barcode but not a postmark. Looks like it went through the system from the barcode, but the post office never put a postmark on it? Not saying it's fake, just genuinley curious when something is or isn't postmarked. I thought all normal stamps had to have one.

Saw a response to the postmark question elsewhere. "Small mail items are run through a postal machine that sprays used stamps and tracking labels with a luminescent dye of a different color than the stamps original coating to mark them as used, which is not visibile to the naked eye." Which mean those unmarked stamps would be useless. But I still don't get why some have visible postmarks with the date and location and why some don't.

there's a little bit of hightechery at the USPS.  They've been taking digital photos of just about every piece of mail delivered for roughly a decade.  (Thanks, Anthrax scare.) Now they're letting users get a sneak peek.

Your My USPS® account was recently upgraded to include Informed Delivery® – a new feature that gives you the ability to see a digital preview of your incoming mail. Informed Delivery allows you to view images of the exterior, address side of your household’s letter-sized mailpieces* on a computer, tablet, or mobile device. As part of the upgrade, you can receive a daily email containing images of your mailpieces that are arriving soon. Select the box below and use your unique code, “XredactedX” to start your notifications. Your code is unique to your account. For security purposes, the code and link will expire Saturday, September 30, 2017.

Whether this is chilling or not, I leave to you.

I won't #mgofoul and stray into politics, but I'm horribly dismayed at the apparently elevation of being a small-minded racist asshole into something worthy of public display and reveration (by a subset of the population).

The shift to "loud and proud" by this group of bigots is worthy of an equal or greater energetic public display/response.

I was thinking along these lines, but something like this would've happend with the previous administrations also.  This person is still hiding their identity, and not coming out into the open with it.  With some of the events of the last 8 months, I'm kind of surprised that this bigot didn't sign his or her name.

Inside job? The sympathy that this letter stirs in support of Sumlin - especially in today's racially charged climate - helps to insulate him from his increasingly hot seat. Therefore, objectively, this question has to be asked.

This letter is stupid and I hope they catch the person. Public shaming would do some good here. Need to make more examples of these kind of idiots so it discourages this kind of behavior.
