META: MGoBlog Update, etc.
I know that there was a post on the front page awhile back about the updates happening on MGoBlog, although I don't recall the specific details.
Over the past few weeks, I've seen an increasing frequency of "Welcome to your new Drupal website" notificaitons when I try to visit. I guess my questions are:
- Is this the site itself? Are others having this issue? Or is it my own device that's on the fritz?
- Do we have any additional timeline for the site update? I seem to recall that it was supposed to be prior to the start of the new season, but maybe that's just my own assumptions?

and then this site got in the way.

There is nothing irrational about that excitement.

I still expect a 5 star commit everytime the website goes down and I see the drupal page. Then the site comes back on and there are no 5 stars. Where are the 5 stars!?
Drupal over here turning me into Maizen.

I'm not so irrational as to expect a 5 star commit whenever the site goes down, but definitely a commit.
One day we will get a commit from a recruit named Dru Paul, and no one will believe it.

Someone is going to have to give Dru Paul a cup check though.

Was trying to post an update on Peppers (saw him practice yesterday - amazing) and something in the post is causing the site to crash. All I have in it are three tweets and my blatherings so it's either my blatherings, the tweets or content about Peppers causing the outage.

Proper response to the "Welcome to your new Drupal website" message: bow deferentially and serve your new overlord obediently.
(And, yes. I did just receive this message a few minutes ago).

Whenever I see the "Welcome to Your New Drupal Website" I think of some Nouveau Brian saying the MGoBlog version of this:
"Well, Roberts had grown so rich, he wanted to retire. He took me to his cabin and he told me his secret. 'I am not the Dread Pirate Roberts', he said. 'My name is Ryan; I inherited the ship from the previous Dread Pirate Roberts, just as you will inherit it from me. The man I inherited it from is not the real Dread Pirate Roberts either. His name was Cummerbund. The real Roberts has been retired fifteen years and living like a king in Patagonia."

The "Welcome to Drupal" is actually more interesting main page content than Infinite Draftageddon.
August 15th, 2017 at 12:31 PM ^
So true... I'd much rather read "Welcome to Drupal..." than Draftagedden. Can that just be over, already?

They're working on it to some degree. I bet if we ask them every time the site crashes that the answer will suddenly change
It's a free website so I'm certainly not in much position to complain, but I do feel we've been hearing about a 'new website coming' for 5+ years now. At this point I'll believe it when I see it go live
August 15th, 2017 at 1:51 PM ^
Accept that it is never going to happen. It's been "almost ready" for years now.

Don't tell me what to do.

New website is going to debut the same day George RR Martin finishes writing The Winds of Winter.

A week or two Seth implied that the timeline was on a knife edge, so things are cutting close.
I really appreciate how forthright the proprietors have become in the last six months about where they are. Threads like this one rarely pass without Seth or Brian giving an update, assuming they aren't too frequent.
And yes, I had the same thought, but if the site goes online in time for the season it will probably happen very close to the season, perhaps during the preview week. And Seth mentioned that some people will be invited to test the new site, and I have not heard of that happening yet (note: Despite my apparently large point total it is possible or likely that I will not be one of those invited, since 20 million of my points are the result of a glitch. This is not unjust.)
August 15th, 2017 at 12:31 PM ^
What is the first rule of MGoPoints?
August 15th, 2017 at 12:35 PM ^
You brag if you get over 20M?
August 15th, 2017 at 12:38 PM ^
I've answered at least two dozen inquiries about my unearned point total, and since I was discussing something the admins were going to do with highly ranked users, I needed to clarify that despite the point total I am not guaranteed to be one of the top ranked users invited to try the new site and thus I was not stating something that I categorically knew, but rather was surmising.
August 15th, 2017 at 2:35 PM ^
Nice! At 20M points, everyone else on the site could start negging you until they were completely out of points, and you'd probably still have 500k!
Then you could change your name to "Ozymandius" and your sig to "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" and your avatar to this:
August 15th, 2017 at 2:52 PM ^
I was just teasing. Not sure why anyone would neg you over that.
August 15th, 2017 at 2:58 PM ^
Hey, I had it coming.

ALWAYS blame the customers, especially if they're a bunch off free loaders.

Could be any number of things, but I wouldn't expect the problems to be the same as the ones on the current site. The current infrastructure is all going away (starting tonight? That's exciting) and other than copying forward data I don't think the new site is supposed to have anything in common with the old one at all.
August 15th, 2017 at 1:54 PM ^
August 15th, 2017 at 1:58 PM ^
Right, the hardware portion. My mistake being vague about that. My assumption is that the Drupal errors will remain possible until the new site is loaded, but that the hardware is better equipped for high traffic.
August 15th, 2017 at 12:30 PM ^
Seth, can you help us understand the combination of "we have an extremely raw draft (of the new site)...still having major issues" and "...we are so close to leaving it (the old site)"?
August 15th, 2017 at 1:52 PM ^
August 15th, 2017 at 2:03 PM ^
So in other words... it's nowhere near ready to go.
August 15th, 2017 at 4:48 PM ^
That is usually what "major issues" entails.
August 15th, 2017 at 2:21 PM ^
that could be considered an upgrade in some cases.
August 15th, 2017 at 6:42 PM ^
Thank you. I guess what I was asking is how you can be "so close" to leaving the current platform and at the same time have major issues with the new system (as you described)? These two statements seem mutually exclusive.
August 15th, 2017 at 8:53 PM ^
Because "major" software issues aren't necessarily gonna take enough time to fix to justify fixing a low-frequency bug in the new site.
2 months is a lot of development, but it's also small in the scale of how long the current site has lasted.
August 18th, 2017 at 7:00 PM ^
I mean we've already conquered so much. Wireframed and designed the new site, figured out new APIs for points and the message board and how our ads will work and how we'll bump features to the top and getting Open LiveWriter to work...
If we got the dev site and everything worked we'd be ready to go beta already. Weeks away when it was months and months when we started.

field is actually Software Testing & Quality Assurance.
If you need someone to run through the site from a Tester's perspective and weird way of wanting to break stuff...let me know.
I'll email as well from [email protected]
