OT: What are you listening to?
I'm always in the mood to find new music. I've recently been listening to Portishead and the Glass Animals.
All of this with a healthy dose of Radiohead and Kendrick Lamar makes for a truly wonderful medley of sounds going into my Memorial Day weekend
Edit: Someone asked for genres so I'll do my best here.
Portishead: trip-hop (psychedelic electronic rock stuff)
Glass Animals: alternative indie rock
Kendrick Lamar: hip-hop/rap
Radiohead: pick a genre other than country and they've dabbled in it
Ray Davies
John Moreland
Son Volt
The Mountain Goats
Seemed like a really cool, down to earth guy.
Currently listening to Goths. It's great.
I'm a big Miles Davis fan while maintaing him in rotation a constant. Presently listening to...Tutu.
This is good album. If you missed Miles' 80's sound Tutu and Amandla are both worth a listen.
In fact, both dropped at the time Miles was at his height. That era of Jazzfusion will never be repulicated only because those were truly the pioneers and masters of their craft.
Beatles - Sgt Pepper (mono) on its 50th Anniversary.
Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell Live
Robyn Hitchcock - S/T
Beth Orton - superpinkymandy
I am elated with the Sufjan live album! I saw him on that tour, and was amazed at how much life he put into the Carrie and Lowell songs. I wanted a live album since that day, to the point of contacting Asthmatic Kitty and asking if they had any inkling of releasing such a project. I actually got a reply, and it was simply "Nah." Good thing they changed their minds!
Assuming you got your username from the song.
Two fantastic Genesis albums as well, but don't leave out Abacab.
Never really got into Tears for Fears however.
Listening to Release Radar playlist on Spotify. So far lots of great releases this week.
I'm liking the new Halsey track called Strangers.
Others I've liked so far: Oh Wonder, IYES, Astrid S, HAEVN, Pat Lok
The "mgoblog is filled with old people" thing doesn't bug me in this context, because there's lots of good music through the ages.
I like task-specific tunes at work. Coding brings out Chevelle. Anything Excel or PowerPoint related brings out the metal because Excel and PowerPoint induce anger all on their own, and Messengers by August Burns Red is still one of my favorites.
For me:
Excel: Punk (Social D, Ramones, and some 90s NoFX, Rancid)
Powerpoint: Common Sense (old stuff before he was Common), Tribe, De La Soul
Excel, for me, is about how fast I can get stuff to happen. That's why punk is a good choice
Powerpoint is about how artistic I can be while still telling a story which is why I choose Hip Hop.
Listen to their autobiography audiobook. You can find it on Youtube. You will definitely be entertained by their debauchery.
Talking about good punk rock, I remember going to see Fugazi when they played at the Union. Good times.
Painting Pictures by Kodak Black. Once you get past his image and his legal troubles, I think the kid makes really gritty gangster music. He paints an incredible vivid picture (no pun intended) of the violence, desparation, and hopelessness oh the streets in Florida.
For the reel to reel reference...
In 1977, I bought (and still have) a Pioner integrated amp that I specifically purchased because it had the connector for a Revox reel-to-reel tape player. Never bought the Revox unit because by the time I had scraped the cash together, the Sony Walkman came along (1979) and I got sold on cassette tape as the way to go.

Nice pull
A lot of Thrice, and Whitechapel lately.
A copy of Injustice For All has been in my car since I was 17.
How did you like To be everywhere is to be nowhere?
I didn't think I was going to like it because I wasn't really a fan of Beggars and Major./Minor, but I was pleasantly surprised.
People say this about bands all the time, but their early albums are so much better. Identity Crisis is my favorite 'rock' album of all time.
I've actually been a fan of every twist and turn that Thrice has taken as a band. I love their newer stuff just as much as the old punk/hard rock stuff.
It still shocks me to this day that Vheissu didn't bring them more commercial success, that album was perfect from start to finish. However, one positive from that is I can still see them live at a small venue for under $40.
I actually had never heard of Thrice until I heard Black Honey on XM. I could listen to that song on repeat all day. Then I heard Blood on the sand and Hurricane and loved them as well. I had no idea the band has been around so long. I might have to listen to some of their older stuff. Will I be disappointed in their older music after hearing their new-ish stuff?
If you love their new album then definitely start with Beggars and Major/Minor.
Vheissu is one of my all time favorite albums from any band, not just Thrice, style wise it's pretty much the bridge from their first 3 albums to who they are now.
The first 3 albums still hold up, Identity Crisis/Illusion of Safety/The Artist and the Ambulance. They are just a lot different. Identity Crisis is mostly hard punk.
Illusion of Safety is what got me into Thrice, In Years to Come was the first song I ever heard from and I immediately had to know what this band was about.
The Alchemy Index is a concept album with some really amazing stuff on it.
Excellent. Thanks for the info, I will have to check these out!
Vheissu and Alchemy Index were awesome.
I'm also a fan of Kenrue's solo stuff.
Great album to sit out on the patio and have a cigar with.
That is a great idea. I got some Caldwell Cigars Eastern Standard for this weekend and Kensrue would go great with that.
I've been fascinated by The Birthday Massacre lately. Gothic/electronica infused rock band.
on low volume with my office door closed.
Danny Brown - Old
The Record Company - Give It Back to You
The genre for both is awesome.
I've been on a classic country kick lately. I absolutely love Gene Watson. Pop country is garbage, but artists like Elizabeth Cook, Cody Jinks, and Chris Stapleton are putting out good stuff.
As far as more urban tastes go, I thought Anderson .Paak's Malibu was album of the year last year.
Still waiting for the Kinks to get back together...
Have you listened to the Texas Red Dirt Country guys like Robert Earle Keen, Jason Boland, Pat Green, etc. Think they might be up your alley as well.
The Kinks are better than the Beatles
That is a flaming hot take. I love The Kinks but don't agree with you.
The answer is always The Kinks.
Saw them Wednesday night in Boulder. Great stuff, looking forward to more from them.
