According to a CAA spokesman, who works for agency that represents Jabril Peppers:

"Peppers went to the combine. He was sick after flying there from San Diego. He has a history of cramping. Peppers was being pumped with fluids, drinking 8-10 bottles of water before he went to bed, because he was the first guy to work out two days for the LBs and DBs. He had to go through that first day, come back on second day, and that was the fear. So Peppers was pounding water and under the weather. He never failed a drug test in his life, nor tested positive before for any substance."

I know this is coming from my pro-Michigan bias and fandom, but I have no trouble believing this scenario.  Knowing he was going to have to go like crazy with two position groups, and wanting to avoid cramps, it makes sense he would overhydrate.

Hopefully that's all it is, and it doesn't impact draft stock at all.

because of cramps? I remember him being sidelined because of cramps.  I'd take no chances if I were him to make sure I didn't fail because I was dehydrated. This seems like a plausible and likely scenario.

As someone who has been sick the last few weeks, hydration is very important, and I'm doing nothing more than laying in bed or sitting at my desk at work.  I'm guessing teams will do their research and make sure this lines up, but probably a non-issue.

Apparently they're now saying he was just pounding gatorades and what have yous as his combine schedule was rigorous, etc.  Hopefully that's all.  Likely?  Meh...

It means Jabril will enter the NFL drug program as a first time offender cause the NFL views a diluted sample the same as a positive test.  As Michigan4lfe accurately projects IMO this kills any chance he had at round1 IMO.

So fucking STUPID.  You know you're going to get tested and you do it anyways.  And please, not the place for the pro/anti pot law debate (I'm pro legalizing if anybody gives a shit).  If you know your soon-to-be boss is going to test - YOU STOP SMOKING POT FOR A WHILE.

Obviously  you've done some reading on this issue to interpret it equates to entry into the "NFL drug program" This is where my question stems from. If this is the actual name of the program would that not only apply, then, to those in the NFL?

"The latest comes courtesy of Ian Rapoport. Foster told him that he failed a drug test at the NFL Combine due to a diluted sample. The NFL’s substance abuse policy treats a diluted sample the same as a positive test. This means he will be enrolled in the NFL’s substance abuse program upon being drafted. That means increased testing and stiffer penalties for failing future tests."

The rule is the same for Peppers as Foster.

I used to give urine drug screens every day when I worked urgent care. Dilute specimen is extremely possible and probable it's from drinking too much water in a short span. Quit accusing of him of masking drug use.

You are absolutely right when you say we have no way of knowing if the dilution was due to drining too much water to try and mask something or simply over-hydration.

But the fact remains the NFL doesnt give two shits and treats the test as a positive.  Not me, the NFL.

And let me ask you a question.  When you heard Reuben Foster tested positive for a diluted sample was your first thought "oh...I bet he just over-hydrated" or did you think he was trying to hide someting?

But none of us know what the cut off is for water intake that made his sample diluted. You are assuming it's neglagance, when it could possibly just be an honest mistake. The kid has been a pretty upstanding young man in his 3 years here. My question to you would be, why do you have a feeling it is drug related? What does he give off to you that says he smokes pot?

For the exact same reason the NFL assumes that.  Because the likelyhood (not fact - likelyhood) is that is why the test was diluted.  Odds are much better that a diluted test is an indication of an attempt to mask a result than it is an honest mistake.

Look, the NFLPA and Owners collectively agreed this to be the case.  Dont blame me cause both parties agreed on this point.  A diluted test is treated as a positive one - ask yourself if you think I'm being unfair "why did both the players AND the owners agree to this?"

If we can be honest with ourselves for just a minute if the diluted test results were for any of the OSU players in the draft and they said "I just over-hydrated" how many people here would believe it?

I think the number rhymes with hero.  Same as the number of people outside of our little maize n blue world who believed Peppers when they heard Peppers explanation for it.

Charlie Casserly is someone I trust more than the others so that is worrisome to me. Initially, there were 5 teams that were really in on getting him and there are 3 that would appear to not be able to take the risk so it certainly does limit him. Interesting draft. I can't wait to see how some of these play out. And FFS, even though I am not a Browns fan, I hope for your sanity that the Browns don't take Trubisky first, thus locking themselves out of Garrett.

He could drink 100 bottles of water and it wouldn't matter. He would most likely be fine on the test. When I got in trouble as a youth I did this; I had to take a drug test so I drank as much water as I could. They never said anything about the test being tampered with.

The problem is when these guys think they're smart enough to mix the sample with water during the test. They always know because it doesn't mix the same way and the temperature is off.

I have been drug tested by WADA, and this is not how things go. First they take you into a very cold room and a wrinkly old man with specticals and an exceptionally cold touch gives you an inspection and asks you to do a twirl. They then flip on sink tap, watch and wait.

After the sample is provided, a small amount is drawn and tested for its specific gravity. The exact number I can't remember it must be over is like 1.013 or something.. I never even came close to that, I would have been close to Tom hermans bad dudes. I once asked if they could also run a check for STD's after the summer of love but that only seemed to get me randomly selected again.

Anyways they always said if you don't hear from us in 6 weeks your clear. The density test was immediate however. I am not sure what happened if you failed that but I think they made you try again, and if that failed you got a "Missed Test" ( We also had to submit our planned location to the hour everyday, which could also trigger a missed test) 2 of those counted as a failed test.

I say this is a non-story.

"Summer of Love" not sure your qualified to say how drug test are run these days.

Not for a comparison but rather a story: I was drug tested in highschool. Went into bathroom alone, peed in the toilet and then scooped whatever out with the cup. Thought "this will never work" so I decided to dump it out, pee in the cup and take my L. Asst principal was commenting on coloration of the different samples and my fucking friend tells me he just put warm water in his cup. I failed and he passed.

If the temperature is off it's considered a FAILED drug screen, not a dilute specimen. For most drug screens failing due to a temperature not within range results in an observed drug screen the same day and you're not allowed to leave the building until the second drug screen is performed.
