I know that I can read through all the threads, which I haven't. But I can verify that if someone drinks too much water, so that they can pee in a cup, the test results come back diluted.

I know someone (not myself) who has to do urinalysis. And has a horrible time of it standing in front of someone standing and peeing in a cup. They got dilute test results a number of times. It took a while for them to figure out NOT to go to relieve yourself in the morning, to hold it, to drink cranberry juice and gatorade, to be ready to explode, and then to pee in a cup. Which gives you regular results.

It is also true that you are automatically suspect in the eyes of testers, because drug users sometimes drink a lot of water, in order to mask drug use. This really sucks:  even if you are not using drugs, you are under suspicion.

As regards Peppers, I won't speculate at all as to whether or not he is using anything.

right away that the sample is too dilute and ask for another one either immediately, later that day or the next day?  You can literally find out whether it's a dilute sample within minutes.  Marijuana will stay in your system for at least 10 days (30 or more days if a regular user).  Cocaine will stay in your system for at least 2-4 days. Opiates will stay in your system for at least 24 hours, usually 2-4 days.

It sounds like the NFL is not only incompetent when testing for ball air pressures but when testing for drugs.

Nearly every employer who drug tests has this same issue and approaches it in a similar way.

A sample collection is not a SAMHSA-certified labratory, which is required to test a sample in nearly every drug test policy (and nearly ever state/federal drug testing law).

"Nearly every employer who drug tests has this same issue and approaches it in a similar way."

Wrong.  Sure, they all have the potential issue with dilute samples, but many employers give the employee the option to immediately retest under direct supervision to offer the employee a chance to provide a non-dilute sample, and if the employee refuses or can't provide a sample THEN they treat it like a positive test.  They do this because dilute samples are not rare, and dilute =/= positive.

I remember once having to do a drug test when my company was bought by someone else and they required drug screens.  I peed in the morning because the appointment was at 9:30 am or something, and I figured I'd be able to build up enough in the next 3 hours to fill the cup.  Fast-forward to the appointment, I fill up about half the sample and I'm out, and the nurse tells me I have 30 minutes to try it again or I'd have to come back.  3 bottles of water and 2 cups of coffee later, I barely fill the sample and it looks like drinking water.  A month later, I had to go back and do the test again because my sample wasn't valid.  Again, not saying that's the case here with Peppers, but there are lots of totally legit reasons this could happen.

I am in a field and role that does drug and background testing.

It's likely Jabril will need to provide another sample the very next day. If they get another sample that is diluted then they can go to hair sample. They will pull from head first and if you have no hair go to arm pit....you get hint.

No running from a hair sample. All the best for Jabril hopefully he just slammed a lot of water from a hard work out and hydrating.

WTF they are ripping Peppers here in NY on Francesa's radio show.... This smells like a Dan Marino esque plot to tank him so someone can get him

You know the test is coming. Peppers and Michigan just never reached potential, it's hard to believe he never played in a bowl game.

You're telling on yourself...bitter because Jabrill left and didn't play in a bowl game and never reached legend status at Michigan.

Well, he did a heck of a lot of other things. Look at the state of Michigan football before and after Peppers. Was he the main reason, no, likely Harbaugh...but was he a key piece of it? Absolutely. Just because he didn't live up to the hype in YOUR head doesn't mean you need to be so salty.

And stop assuming. It's not dumb if he didn't do anything wrong. Do I know that? No. Do you know that? No.

However it is a FACT that he has a history of cramping. As someone who watched every snap he took (in games), I can attest to this. He's cramped up more than once during games.

It also a FACT that he worked out at TWO different positions. How many other players in the combine did that?

So, is it out of the realm of possibility that he truly did want to prepare for these two facts by drinking a shit ton of water? No.

Is it out of the realm of possibility that he smoked weed with his frat bro and friend who also turned up with a diluted sample? No.

Is it out of the realm of possibility that he's a freak athlete who is hiding PED use? No.

But you tell me how you know which one is true. You can't. And until you can...STFU and stop assuming things. It has nothing to do with knowing he's going to be tested. What did he test positive for? Please tell me. Until you have that answer, don't act like the answer couldn't be the first assumption about drinking water to prepare for the biggest day of his life.

...those damn Duke lacrosse players. A bunch of racist, rapists, who should all be castrated for their actions. Oh wait.

especially given the fact we only know his piss was diluted at this point. To my knowledge it means it contained more water or other liquid than normal. At this point, as OP said hours ago, everything is pure speculation. Too much judgment being made prior to find out what's what. it's very possible trolls could run out of negative things to say prior to finding out if he was actually trying to cover something up. I don't know why they haven't given him another test now that enough time has passed that any excess liquids would have to be out of his system and in that manner we could give our opinions, although I'll never be hyocritical toward someone for something I have done many times, if such turns out to be the case.

I might question his reasoning......Hell, I probably wouldn't do that. He's too good of a baller and if he's first round material prior to, he still is.

First, it starts with just water, but then it's Gatorade, then it's Gatorade Fuel Energy Chews, then it's 5 hour energy, then it's Monster energy drink, then it's Kola Champagne Naurally Flavored Soda, then it's regular champagne, then it's vodka, and then god knows what, and the next thing you know you're partying with Johnny Manziel. Steps just had to be taken...

All that proves is that he was over hydrated. Not that he tested positive for a banned substance.. Unless water is now a banned substance.

Which given the rinky dink shitshow that is the NFL head office I wouldn't be surprised.

Question...does anyone know if there is an appeal process or anything or is this it and no one will ever know what happened/didn't happen?

cloudman

April 25th, 2017 at 4:31 AM ^

There is an appeal process once Jabrill is drafted, signs a contract and joins the NFL Player's Union.  Until then, he is just a former NCAAA football player trying out for the NFL.  Perhaps, there is other general legal details, but the NFL is not a governmental organization, rather a private league of private corporations.  Their rules, their game.  Just ask Tom Brady.

As a physician and previous Medical Review Officer, I am concerned about Jabrill's results.

I am going to abide by the Goldwater Rules, which means without personally examining lab results or the person, I will not draw conclusions.

A dilute sample means not just a low specific gravity or osmolality, one also can check the urine creatinine concentration, which remains relatively constant.

There is no mention of masking agents, such as loop diuretics, e.g. furosemide, or thiazide diuretics, e.g. hydrochlorothiazide.  There are many other types of masking agents, which I will not mention, since they do not make dilute urine.

The problem for Jabrill is his samples are now suspicious, which will probably increase sampling frequency and observation while providing the sample.

As a MRO, an fraudulent or obfuscated sample is about as bad a true positive.  Note samples are usually tandem samples, allowing further testing as warranted.

I hope Jabrill stays cool and stays clean. Don't screw up just before the Draft.

I appreciate the medical insight, but this is indeed a matter of likelihood based on how Jabrill instigated the dilution. With all due respect, do you really think that in the case of an athlete, of all people, to be overhydrated is most likely a method of hiding drug or steroid use? I mean, this is Jabrill Peppers...I know, I know...but he's been this well-built since like 10th grade in high school. Why would he just start taking steroids now? Even given the possibility of weed, I think it's more likely, observing Jabrill's work ethic and personality and vigilance, that he drinks a ton of water rather than that he took something just before the draft.

cloudman

April 25th, 2017 at 4:26 AM ^

The only reasonable assumption given the dilute nature of his urine is that Jabrill provided the sample before he began working out.  If he provided the sample after working out, it only increases the suspicion that he altered the sample.  Do not dig a deeper hole.

If you look at any clinical test, there is two measures called sensitivity and specificity. You may of heard of them.  No test is 100% sensitive and 100% specific.  In this case, if we look at Jabrill's case, we all want to believe that he is clean and that he had drank 8-10 bottles of water to rehydrate after a case of food poisoning.  However, he had an abnormal test, whch did not show any banned substances or masking agents, but it did not meet the chemical characteristics of human urine.

It does not matter what I think about the sample, the NFL officials have a clear protocol on how to deal with abnormal samples.  Next time they might not do just urine, they may take other types of samples, e.g. blood, hair, or saliva.  In any case, even if this case is a false positive test, the protocols will be followed.

I am as big a fan of Jabrill Peppers as I can be, I hope he gets through this draft well.  The best thing to do is be up front and honest, and let things take care of themselves.

why do people want to hate Jabrill so much? The media has been busting his ass all last season and during his Heisman run and especially in his draft stock stuff. Why do people hate him so much? I mean he comes from f-ing nothing, the Orange NJ projects. His brother was killed on those streets, his Dad went to jail from those streets ... yet his mother raised a young leader, a man who is all about the team and better for it. Why do people hate Jabrill so much? I have met him and he is an awesome young man. Genuine and with total purpose. What do I say to all of the haters ? BACK OFF.
