Penn State announces annual 'White Out' planned vs. Michigan on October 21st
No surprises here, confirming what we all were expecting.
Michigan is 2-2 in White Out games at Beaver Stadium, with victories in 2006 and 2015 and losses in 2010 and 2013. Overall, Michigan owns a 6-4 record at Penn State, and a 13-7 record in the overall series.
For all intents and purposes, it seems as though Penn State will perptually use their White Outs on Ohio State in even numbered years and Michigan in odd numbered years. Penn State has not hosted a team other than Michigan or Ohio State for the White Out since 2011, vs. Alabama. (However, in 2011 neither Michigan or Ohio State traveled to Happy Valley. You have to go all the way back to 2009 for a time when PSU selected another team INSTEAD of UM/OSU (when they picked Iowa over Ohio State)).
Including this upcoming season, Michigan will have played in more White Outs than any other team. By team:
- Michigan: 5 (including 2017)
- Ohio State: 4 (Buckeyes also have a 2-2 record in these games)
- Purdue, Illinois, Iowa, Notre Dame and Alabama: 1
Let's spoil the White Out twice in a row; Go Blue!
- No, however, all those LBs being out might be why we put up 49 on the nations #14 defense according to S&P+ though - considering we didn't come anywhere close to that type of scoring against similarly ranked conference defenses. OSU, Wisconsin and Iowa were also top-15 defenses and we averaged less than 15 points per game against them. But war-dawg69 says LBs don't matter. Who am I to argue?
- Minnesota was in the first half of the season. Look up. I said that same thing.
- Who lost by 39? Me?
- You don't see why PSU is thought of as being good? They won the conference last year (something we haven't done in 13 years - shhhh). And they bring back something like 16-18 starters. We didn't, obviously, and we return 5.
- Yup, McSorley just chucks the ball up for grabs. He threw for 3,614 yards and 29 TDs (versus only 8 INTs) Mr. Arm Punt put up yardage and TD numbers that would have both been All-Time Michigan Football single-season passing records... as a Sophomore. But he sucks.
Overall this was great input. And a perfect username if I may say so. I read a handle like that and I expect a certain level of MGoBlogger and you didn't disappoint.
magic will not work on us.
I know that they have a good team, but I am also on the side who thinks that some of that arm punt magic has to run out eventually. Their "high-powered spread offense" last year was basically a healthy dose of Barkley, and then throw some jumps balls downfield, which the recievers seemingly always came down with.
Still a game that worries me on the schedule, but I like our chances if the D contains Barkley again and can pressure the QB.
Would love it if Michigan blanked them in their own stadium in front of a record crowd and prime time national audience:
Funny they chose today to announce this - Sam just said he figured that would be their white out game this morning on his show. Not a hard prediction to make. They really want revenge. Would be a shame if Harbaugh made this blow up in their face.
For whatever that stat is worth.
The White Out games annoy me a bit, as they have become a marketing (and making $$$$$$$$$$) thing vs. something that was organic (as was truly the case for the first Whiteout games in 2004 and 2005).
But so those things go, ........ if we have to have a WhiteOut game every year, U-M was the rather obvious choice for 2017.
think you should only do it for night games or games that are going to finish in the dark. I remember thinking it was really pointless for a the noon game two years ago. At least on TV it was not something that was really even noticeable.
Penn State originally put a "trial balloon of sorts" out there saying that the White Out game was going to be against Rutgers (a September game already guaranteed an 8 ET start).
Some fans got upset, saying stuff like "Rutgers is not currently worthy --- nor will they ever be worthy --- of being our White Out opponent!" So PSU instead put it to a fan vote. And the Michigan game, depsite being in November and with no guarantee of being a 3:30 or later game, won the vote.
The ironic thing was that virtually everyone wore white to the Rutgers night game anyway.
I do agree --- if you do this, do it for night games (or games that end after sunset).
Michigan is white-out worthy. Yay.
The so-so record is to be expected though, because they are almost always against the best team you will play all season.
PSU has also sucked for the greater part of 15+ years. 4 double digit win years since 2000. 8 of those years with 7 or less wins.
games I played in.
You can take it to the bank that this game will be at night as well.
Michigan didn't just beat those guys last year. Michigan absolutely humiliated them on national television. This is their red letter home game next season. It might be their red letter game, period.
Prepare for armpunt-fest with some Barkley plays scattered in. I'm not expecting another game like last year, but they're suprememly overrated and our D should largely be able to shut them down due to reliance on said armpunting.
I remember watching the Big Ten title game this season and could not believe how many times McSorely just threw up what equated to a Hail Mary and their wideouts just miraculously kept coming down with it.
I don't recall him throwing any picks (maybe 1?) against Michigan last season, but I think that can be more attributed to the fact that he didn't have any time to throw the ball. Spent the entire afternoon running for his life.
Not surprising that they use a means of covering up mistakes (WhiteOut) as a way to bring their fanbase together.
Maybe in two years they can all wear blinders, and call it a JoePaOut.
I like it when the road crowd matches our guys on the field.
The one thing that worries me is that Penn State will be in year 2 of OC Joe Moorhead's offense. That offense in the first half of the season compared the the 2nd half was night and day.
I hate Penn State, but I do respect Moorhead's turnaround of not only Fordham's FCS football program as head coach, but also Penn State's putrid OL from 2015. McSorley and Barkley coming back with a year of experience in the offense is definitely a worrisome X-factor to me. Hopefully a FBS program offers him a HC position here soon.
Yes. The PSU we played and beat easily is not the same team as at the end of the year. PSU is a good team, probably 2nd toughest on our schedule
I think it's unlikely that the Lions are unbeaten going into that game.
While it's true PSU returns Barkely and McSorley (QB), and 16 returning starters (tied for 1st with Northwestern), by the time Michigan rolls into town, PSU will have played @Iowa (15 returning starters) and @Northwestern (16 returning starters).
The early non-conference game against Narduzzi (Pitt) ought to be a revenge game as well for PSU.
Michigan is the second youngest team in the nation, and it will likely serve as the "Kick in the balls" game we've grown accustomed to - i.e. MSU 2015, Iowa 2016.
But it would be hilarious to see young Michigan take down favored, more experienced PSU again. Like old times.
but, they feel a bit overrated to me. I think this will be a hard-fought game, but just can't forget last year's thrashing of a team that is not significantly different now.
For as good as Saquon Barkley his, I always go back to Michigan being the only team that has not only slowed him down, but completely shut him down. He had one long scamper against us in 2015, but otherwise, he's gone nowhere.
Here's to more of the same in 2017.
for all intents and purposes. Fixed your fix for you.
I interpreted as sarcasm, but perhaps only because I debated sarcastically making the same comment since a lot of people mess it up.
Also, you misspelled porpoises.
saying "intensive purposes" is like saying "french benefits" instead of "fringe benefits.
I think people are taking the sarcasm here for granite.
Let's include 97 as a white out. They didn't have white outs then but they turned that game into a night game......hopefully it turns out the same with....
Rashan Gary playing Glenn Steele
The maligned W. Speight playing the maligned B. Griese
K. Hudson as D. Taylor(minus the injury part)
sure that was a 3:30 game.
Anyone go 2 years ago? How was it? Are they dicks or nice?

Wrong gender though
I was there. Had a very positive experience. Cool atmosphere (loud, giant stadium) and they were pretty nice to us (nicer than MSU fans and 800000000 times nicer than OSU fans). However, I would imagine they won't be quite as nice as 2015 because 1) that was a noon game so less drinking 2) they were pretty mediocre in 2015 and not favored (finished 5-7).
I was there 2 years ago and really ran into no issues. Though, I was with my niece who was a PSU PhD student at the time, so I had an "in".

dicks. Hell, they are even nice to grown men who cover up for pedophiles.
It's just as bad as OSU. I can't believe that delusional fucked up fan base had the nerve to honor Paterno last year.
Just like osu wanting to name buildings after woody " I will punch opposing players in the throat" hayes. That guy was a complete bag of shit. Watching Clemson crush and shutout osu had to bring back memories for that worthless fanbase. Doesn't osu have a couple of penn state enablers on their coaching staff?. I believe they do.
I associate their "white out" games with night games. 2015 was a white out game, but it was at noon. It does not count.
Having been to lots of Penn State games at Happy Valley, there is a huge difference between a noon game and a night game there, just like there is for us.
This will be a white out game and a night game. You can count on it.
k1400 announces open season for the White Out. (if you look closely you can see Morelli's soul leaving his body)
With Gary walking away.
I will say that I've always been a bit curious what Morelli's thoughts in the first minute or two after that hit were. I imagine something along the lines of, "What a very pretty sky tonight.......oh, fuck, I think that's a bone bruise....." - things like that, wandering between his surroundings and the pain.
Purdue played in a 'white out'? That's pretty funny. I don't have a joke there. But it's funny. Who the fuck gives Purdue 'white out'?
Was this another PSU attempt at establising a rivalry (eg, Land Grant Trophy)??
It was the very first one (in 2004) and it was planned by students rather than the admins. Purdue wasn't that bad back then, and I also think PSU was not very good that year so they probably tried to pick a game they could win.
