I honestly think that is where the staff is planning on playing him. They won't tell us or the kid that because he wants to play RB, but once they are on campus, many kids will do whatever to see the field faster. There are no current LB commits outside of Ross and Willie Gay seems like the only other option. That is substantially low considering we didn't get a large LB classthe year before. Samuels' tape is also not that good. He shows elite straight line speed, but little elusiveness. Reminds me of a smaller, faster version of Derrick Green. The main common attribute they both had coming out of HS is that neither of them ever make a serious cut in the backfield or to dodge a defender. They just hit the hole hard, but we don't know whether that's more the OL than the RB.
Ed: Forgot about jordan anthony who seems like a lock, but 2-3 LB's and 7-8 OL seems a little out of the ordinary.
Also, Dillon is considered an athlete by 247, easily could play LB in Don Browns scheme with that agility and contact courage

I really doubt HARBAUGH is recruting someone for a different position without telling the kid. He might tell him he'll get a shot at RB, and if that doesn't work out, the staff thinks his best fit would be LB and see if he wants to make the move and get onto the field. It would be really shitty to recruit a kid to play RB and as soon as he's on campus switch him over to LB without any warning beforehand and no shot at his original position.

We should have several linebackers by the time all is said and done. Anywhere from 3-5, depending on Kwity Paye (whether he's a LB or DE). Ross, Singleton, Anthony, maybe Paye, and maybe Gay.
December 13th, 2016 at 2:21 PM ^
So...forgetting about Singleton and Anthony, who everyone thinks are Blue?
And Kwitty Paye could end up as a LB too.

Couldn't that be mutual though? Like Samuels has said he doesn't want to be in the same class as the #1 RB but the other two guys are ok with it?
December 13th, 2016 at 11:05 AM ^
I like Samuels too. I hope we dont let him get away without getting a grand slam type replacement..

become convinced that I fundamentally do not understand Twitter so I never pay attention to news regarding follows, etc.

Is it like MySpace?

think so, but maybe a little less creepy?

maybe

but way less info about you out on the internet, and usually people don't have personal info/photos of themselves on it

It's a freaky, brutal and irrational thing, that Twitter.

It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.

If he doesn't end up in our class, I'd much prefer if he stayed out west. He's a tremendous athlete and should turn into a quality RB wherever he ends up. Please let that not be anywhere in the B1G.

I'm surprised that the coaches seem to like Kurt Taylor for this class more than Samuels, which is the reverse of how I feel, though a trust-the-coaches caveat obviuosly applies.
December 13th, 2016 at 11:13 AM ^
I think it's more about who Taylor plays for (Loganville Grayson in Georgia) than his pure talent.
December 13th, 2016 at 11:16 AM ^
Yeah, he would be a truly heart-wrenching cut as well. He's been all-blue for a while and very very vocal and passionate about it. Would be tough to recruit Georgia after that.

Teams also need leadership and people who motivate team mates. Maybe Taylor isn't off the charts when it comes to measurables and film, but maybe he will become one of the key "glue guys" who helps push his team to being better. Those roles can be very important when striving for perfection and National Championships.
December 13th, 2016 at 11:41 AM ^
Right...but talented running backs can be helpful for winning championships, too. I'm not saying hard work is useless in a running back, but leadership/toughness can come from offensive linemen and tight ends and linebackers and safeties or anywhere. You don't have to sacrifice talent at a key skill position just to get some leadership.

Magnus, you know far more about recruiting than I do, but can't Michigan get a Samuels type talent next year? They seem pretty competent in that area right now and getting a stud next year would be highly likely, right? If the hotbed of Grayson and Taylor's style (Frank Gore?) might be what attracts them to his commitment.
December 13th, 2016 at 12:19 PM ^
Maybe, but you could say that about DT, too. We could just try to steal a DT from Toledo or CMU. You want the best guys you can get. Michigan recruited a ton of high-level talents this year at RB, and Harris is the only one in the top 275 we seem to have a good shot with. That's even while people should be able to see that Michigan doesn't really have an elite running back who can be counted on to take over games.
December 13th, 2016 at 12:25 PM ^
Thanks.
December 13th, 2016 at 1:24 PM ^
Other than Harris, and unlike every other position really, for RB we don't seem to be in it for top guys
December 13th, 2016 at 12:18 PM ^
Coul Taylor end up a fullback?
Squat, strong, would put his head through a brick wall for Harbs...
December 13th, 2016 at 12:20 PM ^
I don't think so. He's too short, which will limit his weight. He won't be much of a lead blocker if he would max out at about 220 lbs.
December 13th, 2016 at 12:22 PM ^
Gotcha, thanks.

Who is this "Harbs" fella a few of you seem to occasionally reference?

Totally agree Clarence....Samuels appears to be more athletic, but who are we to question the coaches judgment on longterm potential. I'm wondering if this means they see more upside forTaylor, more risk with Samuels, or do they see the two fairly evenly and it's a long-game to establish a recruiting base in GA?
December 13th, 2016 at 11:10 AM ^
Well, make sure you go tweet at the recuits to let them know to come here. /s

Does following someone on Twitter actually mean anything? I am not on Twitter, but I know of people who follow folks that they love AND folks that they hate. Couldn't it just be, like, you know, devoid of any deeper meaning?
December 13th, 2016 at 11:19 AM ^
It COULD be, but past experience tells us that it's usually not that. If they're following someone else's coaches/players, it's usually a sign that they're at least listening to their overtures.

You can follow anybody you like. It could be completely random. I can start following Urban Meyer today just to read his nonsense. Doesn't mean I'm now an OSU fan.
But Twitter also allows direct (private) messaging, like texting. To do that, both parties have to follow each other. Rather than give out his private phone number to a dozen people, I suppose a recruit could follow all of the relevant coaches and fellow commits of a particular school. Then they can communicate privately via Twitter.
December 13th, 2016 at 11:55 AM ^
Right, but why would you follow Meyer unless you were a fan?
December 13th, 2016 at 12:09 PM ^
Trying to gain his trust.
December 13th, 2016 at 12:10 PM ^
About 90% of the people on Twitter are trolls, so when you follow someone, you can then just yell at them about everything they say.

FWIW though, if we strike out on Harris and also lose Samuels I'm ok with that this year. We've got Higdon & Evans plus Walker. I'd rather use those extra slots for more speculative high variance recruits like linemen. All it would do is put a premium on having a good RB haul in 2018.

On WTKA this morning, Sam Webb said Samuels needed to retake the ACT. That's why his visit was rescheduled.
Just as you said, that doesn't mean he's not being slow-played. But this makes it seem a lot less nefarious.
