CFP Rankings Speculation

Submitted by lhglrkwg on

Welp. I'm as pissed as anyone but fortunately Michigan still controls its own destiny.

Today was the classic late season, everyone loses Saturday and we thought it would be dull. So with #2 Clemson, #3 Michigan, #4 Washington, "#8" Texas A&M & #9 Auburn all losing what happens Tuesday? Believe it or not, our loss was probably the most respectable of them all with Clemson losing at home to a similar team and Washington lost by double-digits at home to a ranked team.

I have no idea how you sort this out. Do we even drop? I'm guessing

  1. Alabama
  2. Ohio State
  3. Michigan??
  4. Louisville??
  5. Clemson
  6. Washington

It's going to be hard for the committee to justify throwing Louisville past Clemson and all the way up to 3 and no one else can really justify overtaking us but OSU. Is there a shot we stay put with a last second loss on the road at night?

If it is true that this doesn't have any bearing on our playoff chances if we just win out, AND...

If it is true that teams gain more from losses than from wins, and learn more about themselves from losses than from wins, I will gladly take this loss ----- ONLY IF ----- *this is what it takes to improve and play to our potential to beat OSU in Columbus

That's a good number of "if's", but I'm really tryin hard to see the bright side here while bein in a lot of pain

I don't know if Ohio St should be ranked higher. We beat Wisconsin more handedly than they did (come back in OT). They lost to Penn St who we demolished. Should be lower ranked than us...

That's a wrap!! I'm just as sick and damn tired waiting just as everyone! Truth is we have the coach, the players are there/coming! I hate it but am at ease due to the proof! 2 10 win seasons. What put me at ease was the thought of the final score of this game among others if Brady Joke was our coach!!! We had high hopes (rightfully so) a little to early. That said; I'll never give up! GO BLUE!! Screw this Iowa curse!!!!

The rankings this week will be real interesting.  Supposedly the committee values being a conference champion but if you end up with a 2 loss Pac-10 champ (Wash St, Utah or Colorado). a 2 loss Big Ten champ (PSU, Nebraska or Wisky), a 2 loss Big 12 champ (Oklahoma or Okie St) and one loss teams in Louisville and OSU who don't even win their divisions, who the heck makes the playoffs?

Let's be real. We haven't won in Columbus is 16 or so years. It's not happening this year. OSU will be in the playoffs. Penn State will be in the Rose Bowl. We will play in another meaningless shitty Bowl game. You read that right folks. James freaking Franklin is going to make the Rose Bowl over the great Harbaugh.

Probably # 6, since Washington lost to a good USC team. We lost to a team that got blown out by PSU last week, one that only beat Rutgers by 7 points and one that Purdue scored 36 points on.  Earlier this year I thought our defense was elite but it has fallen off since the MSU game. Our offense was improving but our OL is an average unit at best, not elite. It will be tough to beat OSU but you never know. We could be hyped up for the game and we may play well enough to beat OSU.

1) Bama 2) Ohio State 3) Clemson 4) Louisville 5) Washington 6) Michigan They'll give us the soft schedule noise and justify our drop saying we lost to the worst opponent. Then someone will bring up Clemson and they'll justify by saying they beat Louisville/harder schedule.

Yes, we'll drop because we looked like absolute crap. It will be

1. Bama
2. OSU
3. Louisville
4. Clemson (because the CFP committee can see no wrong in their nail biter wins or losses)
5. Wisconsin
6. Michigan

OSU lost to PSU. Very similar to what happened to us last night. Sparty lost to Nebraska last season, won out, and made the cut... We're still in this. Edit: Can we get Brady Hoke as a guest speaker prior to The Game in two weeks? Thank-you.

My prediction:
1. Bama
2. OSU
3. Clemson
4. Louisville
5. Michigan

Don't know how you can put Louisville ahead of M or Clemson based on resume especially if it's about who you beat like they say. I also think there's a solid chance Michigan ends up ahead of Louisville but I wanted to end conservative.

1) bama
2) OSU
3) Louisville
4) Clemson
5) Michigan
6) Wisconsin
7) penn st
8) Washington
9) Colorado
10) Oklahoma

Remember that SOR is what the committee uses, not SOS. Though similar, not the same. if you are using the SOR metric, how can you say a team with 1 loss that has beaten 3 top ten teams isn't #2? Because of who we lost to. I can see us as high as #4 above Clemson because of that, but I doubt it. I don't know why the committee loves them so much, but they do. Louisvilles loss is to a top 5 team, so they jump us. Obviously OSU for the same reason. But hey, the committee also put a 1loss A&M over undefeated Washington. Don't be shocked if we drop down to 7 or 8. It could happen. Hell, Washington might drop to 10. This committee has proven they're insane

I don't think Michigan is ready for that kind of stage.  I don't think we'd beat Alabama or Clemson and both might get ugly.  Washington is so much faster than us and Louisville and Ohio State are probably much better than us as well.

1. Bama
2.OSU
3.Clemson
4. Louisville
5.Washington
6. Michigan

Out of all those teams we probably have the worst loss. Yes Clemson loss to a 6-4 team, but Pitt has 2 top 10 wins on their resume. Iowa hasn't done anything all year and I think we will be penalized for it.

Yes, win out and we're in is true and it's great to control our own destiny....

However, had we gone in to Columbus undefeated and stayed within 10 points of them in a loss, we would have absolutely been in the final Playoff top 4.  No way they could keep a 1 loss Michigan out of the final 4, especially given how the rest of the scenarios played out this weekend.

I'd even argue (although we would much rather earn a trip to the playoff), the easiest way in would have been going in to Coumbus and losing that game, sitting out the B1G championship game, and probably getting in at #3, where we wouldn't have to play Bama in the first game.

Now we have to win out to earn back the #2 or #3 ranking.

Since UM lost to Iowa, but had UM been 11-1 with a close loss to OSU I don't it would have been out of the question for them to make the playoofs. Depending on what happens in the Pac-12 and Big 12 you could possibly lyrics have a team make the playoffs this that doesn't play in their conference title game. The Big 12 is already guaranteed that their champion has at best 2 losses. The Pac-12 is looking at a decent possibility of a 2 loss conference champ as well as the Big 10.

We drop to 5 at least. Wouldn't be surprised if we drop to 7. Wisconsin will get credit for beating OSU and "almost" beating us, who "aren't as good as everyone thought." They've been fellating Clemson and Louisville all year, they're both top 5 tonight.

Speaking realistically I dont see us beating OSU in Columbus..That means Penn St goes to the BIG Title game and M and OSU dont..Who saw that cominmg?  Osu would be top 4 and into play off with ?  Wisc or Penn st whoever wins the BIG? 2 loss team? unlikely so whoever wins that game goes to Rose bowl knocking Michigan 0ut of that too..Short of beating OSU (unlikely) this game cost us ALOT

I  felt this coming all week long and my worst fears came true...We probably would get a Big 6 bowl game though say Orange Bowl or other so there is that
