ND/MSU: Who do you like?

Submitted by MGlobules on

Okay, "like" might be too strong a word. But who do you want to win? I'm kinda hoping they both crap the bed en route to a Sparty squeaker, setting up our game--between two unbeatens--on the national stage.

I dispise both teams so either way I will be happy one team lost and mad the other team got a win. All I am really hoping for is some good film for Harbaugh and his crew can break down to find a weakness to exploit when we play Sparty. Hopefully ND can show us something they can do successfully against MSU that we can also use. That is my main concern.

If I had to pick I guess I hope ND wins but I see the appeal of an undefeated Michigan vs. MSU game.

I think ND wins in a runaway. If they throw the ball and get out to an early lead O'Connor will have to open the playbook and let it fly and I think that is the type of game MSU doesn't want to play. I wouldn't be surprised if the game isn't close

The positive: The MSU fanbase needs a good ass kickin' on the field

Well, Massey likes Notre Dame, but just by a hair at 55%

I personally like neither.

If I had to project a winner though, it would be ND but not by much. I would imagine MSU can manage to keep the score relatively low without doing all that much to contribute to the score themselves.

I'll say it, I want Notre Dame to turn MSU into stomped roadkill.

I want Spartan fans looking all around going, "what just happened?" and slowly start to realize that their season is about to turn into crap and then watch that despair build throughout the year.  Instead of dealing with more cocky BS from the worlds most annoying fanbase.

I don't always get what I want, but I really want this and I would love for it to start this weekend.

I don't root for Notre Dame, but I'm okay with them winning this one as I have every confidence they'll figure out how to blow it against Stanford or USC.

But I am going for State in this one because a two loss notre Dame team will eliminate them from the 4 team playoff AND I am not over concerned about handling state this year, which will eliminate them from CFB consideration.

The rational vs. the irrational.

Anything that improves Michigan's chances of being chosen for the Cofopo is a rational "like" for a Michigan fan.

You want Sparty to win because, duh.

Why this is so hard to grasp for some fans, but you always want an opponent you will play to win as many games as possible.  So I want Michigan State to win, and I want Ohio State to win as well on Saturday.

And I want them in misery.  I do not want every opponent we play to have won as many games as possible, I especially do not want this opponent to be one with a jackass coach who has an irrational hate-boner for Michigan and uses success against Michigan as the program barometer, I want Sparty to be Rutgers, an adorable little program that thinks it's Michigan's rival that Michigan wants to beat but doesn't care too much about at the end of the day(note this is for football only, hockey and basketball they are more fun as rivals).

How's that been working out for us lately? I want MSU to have a 5-6 loss season this year, which is entirely within the realm of possibility. Starts with them getting pounded in South Bend on Saturday.

I see the appeal of playing an undefeated MSU team, but I also enjoy the thought of Notre Dame blowing them out while effectively ending the Tyler O'Connor Heisman campaign. I think ND wins.

I hate both, but Michigan needs Sparty to win. However Michigan needs to beat Sparty for this to have any future effects. Hopefully both teams look bad and it's a close game with MSU winning on a trick play or something stupid.

I don't like either but my little sister went to state. Noter dame fans are the most unbearable, front running bandwagon of Twinkie punchers walking the earth. ND has already been tested (and lost) while Sparty has yet to play anyone and didn't have MICHIGAN to soften up the Domers the week before. I say ND by double digits and a likely 8-4 or 9-3 for both programs this year.

That's a far forgotten fact of the MSU/ND series.

Sparty has beaten ND 10 times since the 1997 season.  In each win, except three, they played ND the week after we played them.  In 1997, it was the third game of the season, after ND lost to Purdue for the first time in years.  In 2000, we didn't play ND, but Sparty played them after facing Texas A&M (#25), Nebraska (#1), and Purdue (#13).  In 2001, Sparty played them the week after they faced #4 Nebraska.

If you flip some schedules around, ND probably has a record vs MSU better than 48-28-1.

1. Sparty has at least 2-3 more losses on their schedule (UM, OSU, ???) so one more loss won't matter by the end of the year for the CFP.

2. Undefeated UM vs MSU is only significant if you want overrated (not including Des) ESPN Gameday in EL.

3. I want Sparty returning to 3 star or bust recruiting ASAP.  The sooner they are unranked and relegated to BTN or Pam Ward, the better.

I would like both teams to look terrible and play terrible and feel terrible.

If you could guarantee to me that Stanford beats ND, Wisconsin stomps MSU, and MSU slips against IU, BYU, Maryland, or PSU; then I'm a happy man.

Obviously we want ND out of playoff contention, which will happen with one more loss. That loss should be to Stanford. Their defense looks putrid, so anyone could upset them, so no difference to me between a 2-loss ND or a 4-loss ND.

MSU on the other hand; I think we all really want and NEED MSU to start slipping out of the national spotlight. A 5-loss season would be beautiful. Losses to ND, Wisconsin, (either IU OR BYU), Michigan, OSU, and PSU.

So maybe I'm rooting for ND, but since ND has a much easier schedule the rest of the way, maybe we want MSU. Either way, please be an ugly game that nobody wants to talk about ever again. Turnovers, terrible defense, penalties, poor game management, etc, etc, etc.

What we really need is for Iowa to not crap the bed against NDSU.

One, it would essentially eliminate the Big 12 from the playoff.  Baylor and maybe TCU would be the only teams left that could win out and make the CFP.  Okie State is probably done.  OU is done with two non-conference losses.

Two, it  would knock a little bit of luster off Houston's win.

If we have 2006 all over again and 11-0 UM loses by a FG at 11-0 OSU and OSU stomps the B1G West champ, there's a good chance we can be the fourth team in the playoff.

lilpenny1316

The negative to so many top 25 matchups in the non-conference season is that the odds of an undefeated or 1-loss conference champ is less likely.  There will be years, maybe even this year, where a two-loss conference champ will get in the CFP or a conference runner up.

If OSU beats OU and us, and people are comparing resumes between 10-2 OU and 11-1 UM, they may have to evaluate how each team performed against OSU, taking into account that OU was the home team and we were the road team.

As wacky as it may sound, a UCF win over Houston could be huge if OU and UM are fighting for a spot in the CFP.

Is absolutely decimated. Like it was in 2014 when we played them, thanx Hoke, ya bum. If O'Connor doesn't have a good game against ND, then MSU really is in trouble this year. ND 31 MSU 17.

I want Staee to get blown out and lose 42-3. Fuck both teams but Staee's run of good luck needs to end now.

Sparty winning would help our strength of schedule more, would knock ND out of playoff contention, and I feel like (probably inaccurately) ND is more of a recruiting rival for the top players we'll be in the hunt for in the future. So go Sparty i guess? Ugh.
