OT: Spurrier retiring...immediately????
Per @WesMitchellGC and I, we have confirmed that Steve Spurrier plans to retire. No timeline immediately known. He informed team tonight.

I'm worried that there are way too many openings and people are going to be sniffing around all the assistants, but especially Durkin.
Edit: I'm not sure how we are feeling about Football Scoop around here, but...
FootballScoop has learned that South Carolina will name their interim head coach tomorrow morning http://t.co/sD4KPc0THi

But if I'm Durkin I'm going to stay at Michigan a little while and build up my resume as a Harbaugh protege. That way I can have my pick of top jobs that fit me, like Hanlon going to Houston, and not have to take a risk on tire fires like Maryland and Purdue.

I bet he wants to retire before he was at SC as long as he was at Florida. That makes sense. He was the most successful coach the Cocks ever had, I think.

Prior to Spurrier, SC has 1 double digit win season. He's added 3 and 3 top 10 finishes, he's by far the best coach they've had.

But . . .but . . .they had Lou Holtz!

There will be a lot of celebration time going on around the Midlands. While I think many USC fans hold the 'Ol Ball Coach in high regard, many of them think he needs to retire. Me? I can't stand USC, I'm true blue and if they're not playing head-to-head I'll cheer for them Clemson Tigers.

Gamecocks indeed are to Clemson as MSU is to UM. I like Clemson because like UM they have tradition and have actually won something. USC has won exactly 2 conference championships, one in 1933 and one in 1969. They have won the SEC East once. Have finished in AP top 25 exactly 9 times...ever. They've only won 8 bowl games in their entire history. I'd say act like you've been there Fighting Chicken fan but you haven't. Seriously, before 2011 USC won more than 9 games it looks like once, under Joe Morrison in 1984. USC is the very definition of mediocrity.
I take it back, USC is not like MSU. They're more like Indiana. At least MSU won championships once upon a time and are even relevant today.

May be we can give him some incentive by beating up on him this Saturday. He might take the Saban route realizing that things are not going to be the same in B1G? There will be a big meltdown at EL.

It's usually exceedingly rare, but in Week 5 and Sark, Edsall, and Spurrier all look to be out for varying reasons.

Not to mention Beckman.

willing to speculate on Rutgers/Flood/ Julie Herman (as I havw on some other threads).
But does Rutgers have the cash to fire a coach and/or AD? Unless they are near the end of their contracts, they probably cannot afford it.

Hatin'-Ass... Interim?
In all seriousness, I'd love to see him step into Corso's seat on Gameday. Ole ball coach donning the visor of the team he's picking?
October 12th, 2015 at 10:01 PM ^
ESPN would either sanitize his personality or turn it into contrived shtick. They even took the soul out of Bobby Knight.
October 12th, 2015 at 9:35 PM ^
God I hope he replaces Corso on gameday. He's perfect for that show.

teams at Florida were damn fun to watch. Never got a QB to committ to South Carolina.
His press conferences the week befor they played Tennessee were always gold.

I just wish UNC could have beaten him before he left. I have a kid at UNC, the real "Carolina." It would have been nice if Carolina could have sent Spurrier out with a loss.
Honestly, though, Spurrier is very entertaining. I hope he does some TV commentary or something.

SBNation has some of the stuff gleaned from South Carolina blogs - LINK
"An interim head coach will be named Tuesday morning at 8:30 ET," FootballScoop.com reports, which would seem to indicate this is happening, uh, now. FS also tweeted that this is "effective immediately."
This seems very sudden, so I am interested as to whether or not we'll hear what has spurred this on.

Has to be health related. Only other option is someone uncovered something really really bad.
