THAT'S THE SPIRIT. User "Number 7" on the correct way to take all information:

1.  All good news is good news.  (Because it's good news.  Duh.)

2.  All bad news is good news.  (Because it's probably just a smokescreen, because timing.)

and, thanks to this,

3.  No news is good news.  (Because also timing.)

Don't forget "4. In case of 2, annihilate the messenger."

ON HARBAUGH'S INTEREST LEVEL. I like it when NFL guys fire off things that I know aren't true, because then I can rail against 'em. It provides a level of certainty that's rare in any coaching search, and especially this one featuring a primary candidate who's employed until the end of December.

So: I know that the Michigan end of things referred to here…

…certainly does not think they're going to have to move on, at least not to the point of being "convinced" about anything. There was a meeting of some variety—executed slightly better than Jeremy Foley's—but the aftermath of it has not seen any lack of pursuit or increased focus on guys other than Harbaugh. Since Michigan didn't advertise it to the nation, we can't be certain exactly who was involved. I've heard it was high-level, possibly a Hackett-Harbaugh face-to-face.

I don't know what's going to happen, but the NFL-facing sources have been so strident about things that I know are not true multiple times that I take every new report from them with a grain of salt. If they end up being right it's not going to be because they're super plugged in.

ALSO HARBAUGH. Heard that he took in the OSU game with a bunch of former teammates who were asking him to fix things, to which he said (paraphrased) 1) you'll have to wait a bit here and 2) I'll have to get paid like a top five college coach.

The upshot of the first bit: Harbaugh isn't going to to anything that would be seen as abandoning his team, even as their playoff odds get extremely long. Don't expect something until the 28th, if Michigan is still waiting then.

The upshot of the second: I don't think we're talking Godfather money here, but something approximately Saban/Meyer yes. This was apparently the subject of a brief tug-of-war at the AD/prez/regents level when Schlissel balked at the idea and the regents were like "no, actually, this makes sense because X and Y." They are good to go for compensation, with donor aid.

UNLESS! That is, unless Harbaugh gets canned before the season's over. That would be completely nuts on San Francisco's part, but guys who cover the team are broaching the idea:

With a trip to Seattle coming Sunday, where the 49ers haven't won since 2011, before Russell Wilson was drafted, there's a reasonable chance Harbaugh doesn't last the season.

The precedent is Harbaugh's predecessor Mike Singletary, who was fired in Week 16 of 2010, after San Francisco was eliminated from playoff contention. That year, the Seahawks won the NFC West going 7-9.

If they're so inclined Michigan could step in and save the 49ers a hunk of money. With Harbaugh's contract an asset, it's unlikely he gets fired-fired; SF would probably not want him across the Bay and if so would want to get at least a mid-round pick out of it. Speaking of across the Bay…

MARK DAVIS IS A ROMULAN
DON'T WORK FOR THE ROMULANS BECAUSE THEY'LL EVENTUALLY ENSLAVE YOU AND PUT YOU TO WORK IN THE DILITHIUM MINES OF PENTAX IV, THAT'S MY MOTTO
SHUT UP, IT'S A GOOD MOTTO
AM I MINING UNTIL I DIE ON A ROCK IN THE DEMILITARIZED ZONE? NO? QED.

THIS BETTING MARKET IS ALL OVER THE PLACE. After pulling their Harbaugh prop over the weekend, it returns with the Raiders a heavy favorite:

And then a heavier one:

That wild swing is likely because of the weekly NFL reporter scoffing and the fact that Harbaugh talked to Raiders owner Prince Valium after San Francisco lost to his team on Sunday. I'm a little skeptical Harbaugh's going to take the worst possible NFL job, one that might not even be in Oakland next year, but that ain't good. On the other hand:

And they just dropped the M odds to 4-to-1 as money comes in on them once again. Woo!

PROPS TO NFL LLOYD CHRISTMAS, THOUGH. This is a good quote:

What did they talk about? I asked Davis, who laughed and said:

“I told him, ‘You stole our dysfunction!” Davis said. “‘That’s supposed to be our thing!’”

THE PLAN B TIER. With everyone laser-focused on Harbaugh there continues to be little clarity as to who might be the backup plan. Les Miles said he had not been contacted by Michigan, and I continue to believe that he's facing too much internal opposition to get a serious sniff.

Sam Webb has had a couple posts on Greg Schiano and Steve Addazio in the last couple days, names that alarm and boggle.  The most recent was at least about how Addazio is a more likely candidate than Schiano; I choose to interpret that information as "we do not want Greg Schiano so passionately we would choose to hire Steve Addazio over him." Corroborating is Steve Lorenz, who says all the noise about Schiano has come from his end($), with no Michigan folk mentioning his name.

That leaves Addazio's presence. Bald Brady Hoke makes no sense as any kind of candidate except to your crazy old coot grandfather who has all his savings in gold and doesn't trust the FDIC. Unfortunately, we have a lot of those hanging around. FWIW, I haven't heard one thing about him.

I don't think anyone has a strong grasp on who Plan B is. Rivals is pushing guys like Sean Payton and Bret Bielema; meanwhile on WTKA this morning Sam was talking about Jim Mora. I have heard diverse and sundry names, none of which stand out from the crowd. Clint Brewster's five guys not named Harbaugh or Miles seems like a realistic baseline: David Shaw, Mora, Dan Mullen, Kyle Whittingham… sigh… Addazio.

PINKEL? Seeing chatter about Mizzou's Gary Pinkel, but… like… okay remember what happened when Nebraska hired Mike Riley? Gary Pinkel is a bit like that. He's obviously got a much better track record than Riley what with his five ten-win seasons in the last eight years, but he would be 63 by the time he coached one game at M. By the time he got his guys in here he'd be ready to retire.

Pinkel may be an excellent coach, but is he that much better than a guy a decade younger than him? Coaching transitions suck; do you want to guarantee yourself another one in 5-7 years?

HE DOES THIS EVERY YEAR. One of the most attractive candidates on the B tier is on the verge of signing an extension:

Scott Stricklin expects a contract extension for Dan Mullen soon.

"Dan, in his defense, his focus has been recruiting, being in bowl prep," Stricklin said. "But I'm optimistic we can get that wrapped up pretty soon."

Ah but there's a  catch with the headline here:

Mississippi state law doesn't allow for a state employee's contract to extend more than four years. In each of the five previous seasons Stricklin and Mullen have come to an agreement. This year appears no different.

Iowa fans envy Mississippi State law so hard right now. But anyway: because of this law MSU has gone back to Mullen every year for a pro forma extension. That statement from the AD is based on hope and expectation and not nearly as meaningful as it would be otherwise.

There's been a bare minimum of Mullen chatter aside from some national guys on Scout saying he would jump if given the opportunity, so for whatever (probably bad) reasons are out there he does not seem like a likely option if Harbaugh falls through. That makes no sense to me, nor big chunks of the coaching fraternity. It is what it is. I'm still hoping this apparent lack of interest is because there is no serious interest in anyone not named Harbaugh just yet.

20289788_BG3[1]

nope

THIS, HOWEVER, IS THE END OF BUTCH. Butch Jones gets extended to 2020 at $3.6 million a year(!). In two years at Tennessee he's 11-13 and his best win is likely over South Carolina this year. Recruiting's going in the right direction, but as Hoke demonstrated that's not always enough.

In any case, that's enough to knock Jones off the Plan B list.

Etc.: Oregon State contacts Hoke. Note that they have not contacted Schiano. In Oregon State's opinion we would be downgrading if we hired Greg Schiano. Baumgardner column.

Haven't you learned yet that recruiting will not stop a good coach from winning. Oregon State was not recruiting at a lower level than MSU was when Dantonio arrived. They didn't have t worse then Cincinatti with Brian Kelly..good coaches build up and win, Riley has never won anything.

I was listening to Cowherd over lunch and he asked Bill Simmons what he would do if he had been given information similair to what Colin says he received in respect to the Michigan job.  Simmons said he would give out the candidate's name; predictably Cowherd said he "just can't burn his source".

Take it for what it is worth...................I was told that Hoke would be fired on Moday or Tuesday.....it was Tuesday. I was also told that the Jims had a face to face coversation on 12\4 and that it was a " generally positive conversation".

If true, Carr's comments regarding Harbaugh also occuring on 12/4 make for some interesting theories. For example, Harbaugh needed everyone pulling in the same direction if he were to come. Another theory is that Hackett's plan was make runs at Harbaugh from as many angles as possible, with Carr rallying support of former players who hold his opinion in high regard.

assuming SF loses to Seattle this weekend, what has to happen in the other NFL games to keep them in the hunt for a playoff spot?  I'm hoping that there is a way they are eliminated as soon as this weekend.  Does anyone know?

Dallas Walmart…

December 8th, 2014 at 1:18 PM ^

1. Seattle

2. Arizona

3. Winner of Dallas/Philly game has 10 wins

4. Winner of future Detroit/GB game has 10 wins

5. NFC South division champ.

Seems like there is still one spot left if the losers of 3 and 4 lose all their remaining games.  Also, what if there is a tie in game 3 and/or 4?  I realize the odds are very long for SF with a loss Sunday, but are they zero?

I can't handle the waiting and I feel like SF being eliminated will move the needle on available information!

They would not be eliminated because outside of Seattle and Arizona, none of the other teams you listed have 10 wins yet.  It's still possible that Dallas or Philly could lose out and that the Lions or Packers could lose out and the 49ers get the last playoff spot.

That's super unlikely, but still possible so they wouldn't be eliminated, especially because they have the tie-breaker against the Cowboys.  Since Dallas will likely lose at Philly next week, that will still be in play.  The Lions play the Vikings next weekend, which they will probably win but it's the NFL so you never know.  If The Niners lose and both the Packers (which they could do tonight) and Lions get to 10 wins, they're out.

WolvinLA2

December 8th, 2014 at 1:40 PM ^

Of course it's unlikely, but the poster asked if they will be eliminated and the answer is no.  However, if the Packers win tonight, a Niner loss and a Lions win over the Vikings would be enough to do it.

It's the NFL and crazy stuff happens at the end of the year.

I agree with your assessment.  The Niners do seem like huge long shots at this point, but nothing is impossible when it comes to December football in the NFL.  That being said, I like the chances of the Niners being eliminated from the playoffs next weekend.

Seattle at home vs. a reeling Niners team, Lions at home vs. the Vikings, Green Bay beating either Atlanta at home or Buffalo on the road?  All seem like they should go the way we want.

One thing I don't understand is the scoffing at Sean Payton. Facts:

  • He hates the commissioner of the NFL.
  • Goodell sabotaged what was a dynasty-caliber team that he was coaching.
  • He's already won a Super Bowl.
  • A Super Bowl is not happening again for the Saints. They'll be a middle to upper-middle class team for another 3-6 years while Brees winds down his career. College would be a new challenge.
  • He's currently making $8 million, but some college coach will make that kind of money eventually, maybe even the next coach at Michigan (it's been dubiously thrown around for Harbaugh). Even if it's not realistic, $5-6 million is and that's still a lot of money.
  • There are a lot of blue blooded college teams, but I think there are much fewer teams that could snag a good NFL head coach, and Michigan is one of them. If he wants out of the NFL, who knows when the next one will open up.

Add it all up and I'm not saying Payton is happening, but I think it makes more sense than none at all.

It's definitely true that his run in NO is coming to an end soon, and I think 3-6 years is really ambitious.  NFL teams are extremely QB-reliant (unless they have an awesome D which NO does not) and Brees turns 36 in January.  His stats this season are down from where they have been the last few years (already as many INTs as last year, lowest YPA since 2010 and on pace for fewest yards since 2010 and 2010 was already a down year for him).

He likely know he had a great run with Drew Brees and Michigan may be his best chance to snag an awesome contract with better job security right now.

I feel like he's not getting a lot of talk, but he lost a bad game to end the season 8-4 and rumor has it the AD and him are not getting alone. Moving him to AA might be the change he needs. I would welcome him with open arms!!

I'm with you, I'd love Stoops, but his name gets brought up every year for big coaching gigs.  It's hard for me to get overly excited about the prospects of him coming.  He has had a lot of opportunities to leave and never pulled the trigger.

is kind of like the trophy girlfriend that you know isn't going to last.  You just keep going back because it's....intoxicating!?   It's going to be really difficult for Harbaugh to turn his back on all the excitement & intangibles that the NFL offers.  That little bird on my shoulder keeps chirping he is not coming to M so get over it and start focusing those individuals that will come.  Sorry about that y'all but it's just my gut feeling, hope I am wrong!

Yeah, this Rapoport guy, the person who tweeted about Harbaugh turning down Michigan, also predicts that multiple teams will have interest in Mike Singletary after the NFL season is over. I think we are safe to say this guy may not have the most reliable sources.

Erik_in_Dayton

December 8th, 2014 at 2:42 PM ^

Putting aside age for the moment, the guy must be a hell of a coach.  Missouri had a couple of decent seasons with Larry Smith before Pinkel arrived, but they were generally terrible for a very long time prior to Pinkel's tenure.  Indiana is probably a good comparison in terms of the poor performance of the team and the apathy of the fanbase (and, seemingly, the school).   Bringing the Tigers to the point where they compete with major SEC schools is extraordinary.

I'm not arguing for Pinkel for Michigan.  I just think it's worthy noting what he's accomplished.

The Shenanigans Factor that eliminates Miles also eliminates him.  Seems that every police blotter or dismissed player with some talent winds up on the Oklahoma roster.  Kellen Jones, DGB, Dalton Rodriguez, to name just a few.

I'm sure I could come up with more on Google but that's enough to convince me that even if he was open to it there's too much Shenanigans.

UM has had it's own issues with the blotter under Carr, RR, and Hoke. Police blotter issues are a problem every coach has to contend with. It's not necessarily a sign of a coach's problems with ethics.

Stoops by everything I have read is a good guy and as clean of a coach as there is.

He isn't an option because he isn't leaving OU.

I desperately want Harbaugh to be Michigan's next coach, and maybe I'm just being a pessimist, but I don't think it is happening.  People say he is "interested", but you can be interested in more than one job opportunity.  I know nothing, really, but it seems to me Jim really wants to succeed in the NFL.  I doubt he believes his "personality can't work in the NFL and is more suited to college".  The Raiders want him?  The Raiders want him enough to give him power in personnel decisions?  The Raiders might be moving to LA?  The Raiders are crazy enough to "overpay" SF in a trade?  The Raiders aren't afraid of a lilttle conflict and dysfunction?  We already know his wife likes the west coast.  I just get the feeling that all of this will win vs any intererest he has in MIchigan.  I very much hope I am wrong, but I have the sinking feeling I am not.

On a related note, I am very concerned that Michigan can't land a plan B coach.  I would love to have Stoops but I don't believe M can get him.  I am dreading the hiring of a disappointing plan C coach that makes me wish they had just hung on to Brady for another year.  Dread is not a strong enough word.

Does no else on here get the feeling that Harbaugh already said yes .... a while ago? I mean there is little to no movement with Michigan actively searching for any other coach (just feeling candidates out). On top of that every insider is so tight lipped with the 50/50 or 60/40 thing that really it seems like they are just taking caution in case a repeat of the last Harbaughgeddon occurs. That coupled with the fact of the rave reviews of Hackett being "The Man" makes me think he came in and sealed the deal so quickly that it stunned and impressed everyone. I just feel like this thing is done with, and has been for a while. Every insider is holding their breath until the end of the NFL season when Harbaugh can put his signature on paper. Barring any trade talks between the 49ers and another NFL team I don’t really see the point in analyzing the Harbaugh to Michigan idea anymore.

How about Ross step in and tell Harbaugh to take the Michigan job for five years, give him some major bonus $ if he stays beyond that, and tell, him he can always have the Dolphins job if he wants to go back to the NFL after that?
