OT: Alex Trebek has pancreatic cancer
Jeopardy! had a message from Alex Trebek stating that he has stage 4 pancreatic cancer (LINK). That's terrible news. I feel bad for the guy and his family. I don't even know how long he's been on Jeopardy! (I'm sure I will find out with a quick Google search right after this), but it's been as long as I can remember.
I sure hope he can pull through.
Trebek has been hosting Jeopardy! since 1984. Thanks, Google.
Also, he's 78 years old. I had no idea he was that old. He looks like he's about 65.
Survival rate for stage 4 pancreatic cancer is about 3%. His odds are not great. I lost my step-brother to the disease last year. F... Cancer
F*** cancer is right. I've lost several family members to various forms of the disease, and we have a coach on our staff who's going through treatments right now.
Michigan football has a coach going through treatment? Can I ask who, I didn’t know this.
I'm assuming he is talking about the team he coaches on, not Michigan.
Oh ok. Well around here, me included at times, easy to say “we” as UM fans. I thought I would ask.
Yep cancer sucks. Not sure anyone is not touched by it sometime in their life whether it’s thenlmselves or a loved one who contracts it. Thoughts to Alex hope he can beat it
What’s astonishing is he honestly doesn’t look like he’s aged at all in that time.
not quite 69 though
Same thing with William Shatner. He looks like he could be in his 60s, but he’s 87. But when you have as much money as they do, you can make yourself look as young as you want.
What is, a terriible way to die?
having to watch Jeopordy?
Correct, I am an idiot. Jeopardy
Haha the idiot couldn't even spell it correctly!
I may be an idiot, but Jeopardy is still not entertaining.
The fact that the show has been on the air for 50(?) years says most people think it's entertaining. The show took off when Trebek took over. He should be in the HOF. One of the best ever game show hosts and he seems like a genuinely great person. This news really sucks.
Me? I miss Art Fleming and Don Pardo.
I believe Art Fleming and Alex Trebek are the only two people to host Jeopardy in the US.
I too miss Art Fleming and Don Pardo. When I was in grade school, in the 1960s, I would watch Jeopardy at lunch time. That's because we went home for lunch back in those days.
Stick to eating lead, you fucking dipshit.
You seem angry
You seem like a lead-eating dipshit
Well there's the rub, Jeopardy isn't entertaining to idiots.
Television Gameshows: The medium for the enlightened.
Answering in the form of a question, how sophisticated.
Its fine if you like it. I was poking fun. I don’t think intelligence metrics should be applied to those that see the show for what it is.
I guess I have a lead sandwich to consume and a wheel of fortune show to watch. That show has been around for fifty years so you KNOW it’s good.
Wow this is a strange thing to go all kill, kill, kill on but I guess you're triggered by it.
You might want to be more clear as to what you're criticizing because its not helping your case comparing Jeopardy to Wheel of Fortune; was that cuz one always comes after the other? (No matter where in America you may be at 7/7:30)
Fact is, one is like a trip to the casino and the other is like preparing for the LSAT than having to try to pass it orally in front of millions.
I still would prefer to be on Jeopardy, I'm a terrible speller.
I'm working on a number dense 150 page document. I go to this blog for UM sports and general hilarity, of which this board is filled. I try to add my own to contribute to the general good, and I get a chuckle here and there whilst underwater on a tight deadline. I will literally talk about the speed of paint drying for my brief mental breaks. We talking Jeopardy... okay!
To all game show watchers, I aint mad at cha... I've got nothing but love for ya... do your thing.
So:
"All work and no play make Homer go crazy." Got it.
Our 9 year old grandson, the die hard Michigan fan, comes to our house from school 2 or 3 times a week. He arrives just before jeopardy comes on...it is his favorite show...and given the options-I am very pleased. He's a very bright little guy-does well with the math, science, history and geography related categories.
Hate to say it, but pancreatic cancer is a very, very short death sentence in most instances. Prayers.
When my Dad got diagnosed with it, they gave him 18 months. He died five days after his 60th birthday, 18 months later.
Dad was a real stickler for being on time, so my brother and I joke that he probably died at the 18-month point just to be punctual.
sorry about that sam. i just remember that in all the homicide cases i've done, if the initial shot/stab/punch didn't do the deceased in, it was the pancreas that gave out and game over. a little, tiny, but incredibly important part of our bodies.
Awful news. Scary too as I can only assume with his fame and fortune he has regular medical tests, etc. which (again I assume) means this went badly quickly. Maybe too many assumptions in there,
Pancreatic cancer is extremely hard to detect through symptoms alone. By the time symptoms are manifest, it’s generally spread. Tough break for Alex.
"everybody gotta die sometime Red" - Sgt Barnes
It was good knowing you, Alex.
Ummm
Really, really hated to hear this news. Alex Trebek is nothing less than an American institution.
Canadian?
.....our 51st state. Seriously, thoughts and prayers to Alex and his family.
He recently said that Geordie Howe was his hero.
I was trying to find the appropriate "geordie" joke re: northern English folk, but it just wasn't there. I think Alex used to play hockey in celebrity games with Gordie not all that many years ago.
That really sucks. Godspeed, Alex!
Given it's stage 4 the likelihood is he's only got a couple of months (if not weeks).
Absolutely awful news I feel so bad for Alex and his family I hope for a miracle for him.
What is... fuck you cancer! Horrible news and nothing but the best of luck to Alex Trebek, give cancer fucking hell!
pancreatic cancer is one of the most painful ways to die. Enjoyed watching him on TV growing up.
FUCK Cancer.
3% survive. Be one of them, Alex.
I have watched Jeopardy every day since 1984. The thought of it without Alex is like the CBS evening news without Walter Cronkite, or the Tonight Show without Johnny Carson. The franchise will continue, but its golden age will have passed. Sad news indeed.
It survived the demise of Art Fleming and will once again.
Only if John Ratzenberger takes over.
