This would be instituted universally. Obviously t wouldn't work if only select schools did it.
|12/15/2018 - 11:00pm||Provide draft insurance. I…||
Provide draft insurance. I think Jake Butt had this and it paid him based on how far he fell in the draft. I'm not sure what criteria were used, but I think that's reasonable.
Sooner than later, game attendance and viewership will suffer if the best players aren't playing.
I do think it's the players choice to play or sit out. But if they choose to sit, I also think they should reimburse the school for a portion of that year's scholarship. They were given certain compensation in exchange for playing football. If they choose not to live up to the original agreement, they're in breach of contract.
Decisions based on economics have economic consequences, both good and bad.

Calling Harbaugh incompetent is the delusional take and definitelya troll job.
The game plan against OSU may have been misguided, but history doesn't support your label.

Eat the worm. Lick the salt. Suck the lemon.
|12/11/2018 - 9:55pm||I don't necessarily disagree…||
I don't necessarily disagree with this, but both approaches cost both teams.
OSU overlooks some opponents, possibly due to the season long focus on Michigan. It cost them the Purdue game and should have cost them Maryland too.
Michigan focused on the Revenge Tourand has devalued the OSU game. We all know how that has worked out in recent years.
Two opposite approaches, both cost each team. It cost Michigan more, IMO

And it may change significantly again from some social event or rule change (see CTE). Would that mean we should devalue the games that precede that happening? Of course not.
|12/09/2018 - 9:04pm||That's irrelevant. The…||
That's irrelevant. The expectation is to educate and graduate. They all have to practice, they all have the same demands, scholarship or not.
And I know you're not implying that scholarship athletes are less intelligent than walk-ons, right? Right.
|12/09/2018 - 8:41pm||Count me in the camp that…||
Count me in the camp that says if you don't play in the Bowl , that's your decision.
But at that point I think the player should be required to reimburse the University for a portion of that year's scholarship.
It's breach of contract. They should be accountable for not living up to the agreement to play, in exchange for tuition, room, board, etc.
|12/09/2018 - 12:46pm||I hate to say it, but it…||
I hate to say it, but it would be amazing to see Harbaugh go 5-100 against anybody. The implications are mind-blowing.
|12/09/2018 - 12:28pm||Actually, I think it's, "We…||
Actually, I think it's, "We had subs, it was crazy."
Bo's record in Bowl games wasn't stellar. That is true. But there was something about his "win the right way" and "The Team" philosophies that players, alumni and fans embraced then, and still do today.
The anti-Machiavellian ideal that the means have to justify the end is in diametric opposition to the Meyer, ES-EE-SEE model of win at any cost.
It's also the reason OSU spends its time wishing it were Michigan (11 Warriors) and not vice versa.
I'm fine with Bo quotes as a reinforcement of the ideals that my Alma Mater endorses and emulates.
|12/09/2018 - 11:31am||i don't think it's a mater…||
i don't think it's a mater of reframing the expectations.
The first expectation is to educate and graduate student athletes. 45 academic All-BIG says this is being acheived. Anyone who believes it should be anything different, should feel free to jump off the bandwagon. Period.
The next, and probably most recently questioned (again) is to compete for BIG and National titles. The year before Harbaugh arrived we were 5-7. That isn't passing the eye test. Since he has been hired Michigan has been in the race for the East Division every year and co-champs this year. If the divisions were more equally distributed, or Michigan were in the West, results may have been better. Alas, that is not the case.
The reality of the situation is that Michigan is not as far along the timeline to achieving those goals as most thought. A week before the OSU game EVERYONE thought we were there. We are not. Yet.
But, if you can't see the progress that's been made, you're not looking. Perhaps we just need to realize there is still more work to do and not be so eager to throw the baby out with the bath water. Let's not reframe the expectations, but let's reexamine where we actually are in relation to getting there.
|12/02/2018 - 8:34pm||I'm probably in the minority…||I'm probably in the minority here, but I think a player should either play in the Bowl game, or be required to reimburse the school's scholarship value for all, or at least part, of the year in which the game occurs. I understand there is risk to the player, but there are insurance policies to be had. To me, it's also about a good faith agreement, at least in part. The school lives up to its promise to provide a scholarship in return for athletic performance. If either party can alter that agreement at some point, that should be allowed, but the contract should be considered breeched and a penalty imposed. That's the way breech of contract is handled in the business world. This is just a business decision by the player, so let them reimburse the school for percentage of the cost of attendance.|

|11/27/2018 - 12:47am||i think there was some…||
i think there was some evidence to support the idea that OSU would have an easier time with Michigan due to our Offensive style. I recall reading somewhere on this very blog that Purdue,(and maybe Maryland) had a tendency to have more explosive play potential on Offense. Michigan, OTOH, has a slower paced Offensive style.
The one thing that caused the OSU Defense to struggle is the one thing Michigan's Offense didn't do/have.
I hoped Michigan would run a more up tempo style and take some shots at their D. Alas, Pep and the boys thought the 3 yards and body blow Offensive game plan was the way to go.
Fire Pep Hamilton. Hire Cliff Kingsbury. Please.

Thanks for doing the follow up on this. I was thinking the same thing, relative to our earlier expectations.
I think the reason for most of the intense disappointment was based on an expectation after OSU's underperformance in some games.
Their lackluster games against Purdue and Maryland made them appear more vulnerable. They have so much talent that they tend to look past certain games and take a win for granted. I think a lot of us bought into that, while forgetting that OSU will never take the UM game for granted.

Home field advantage is worth about 3.5 pts. per game statistically, IIRC. So, even if you give OSU another 4 pts., Michigan still wins comfortably, in this exercise.
We've all watched both teams play this year, and while OSU may have a slight talent advantage, Michigan appears much better coached and more cohesive. I like our chances better than in most recent years, especially with the improved QB play.

The "never could" I was referring to was the '97 season. That team was 1 kicked pass away from a loss to Mizzou. They never could have/would have "won" a share of that title without the "fabulous parting gift" bullshit that got used to justify a title
Anyone and everyone watching that year knew Michigan was a far superior team, in every way and would have throttled Nebraska, head to head.
Even the Nebraska fans I partied with at the Alamo Bowl a few years later conceded that point.
