Still Need DL Coach: Who's Your Home Run Hire? Sleeper Pick?

Submitted by JHumich on January 13th, 2019 at 12:24 AM

I trust that coach will be finding someone great, but I found myself speculating today, and since it's been a few seconds since we had one of these threads, I thought maybe there are others who have been doing similar. I basically followed the find-Don-Brown method of looking at NFL and college DL stats and seeing who popped. Here's what I came up wtih. Who would be yours?

Homerun Hire:

Jay Rodgers

The Bears DL has been killing it, as did his Broncos DLs before that. He's been in the NFL for 9 years, but did coach college for 8 years before that. He was even a recruiting intern at Ohio State once upon a time. Admittedly unknown on the recruiting side, which is why I might like my sleeper pick even better...

Sleeper Pick:

Walter Stewart (2018)

Walter Stewart

Northern Illinois was tied for 2nd in the FBS in rushing YPA, and tied for 7th in sacks. Recruiting-wise, he's from Ohio and stayed in-state as a four-year DL starter at Cincinnati, also had 3 years in the SEC (DL grad assitant at TN), and his time at NIU.

Is it really that critical that we hire another highly effective recruiter? Gattis and Campanile are known to be strong recruiters, on top of the guys currently on staff who can do it well. We have survived with at least one dud recruiter on staff in the past (Drevno, Mac). While recruiting is a priority, obviously, I think we have the luxury of being able to hire a coach more for his on-field prowess than recruiting chops, based on the makeup of the rest of the staff.

I think Harbaugh's Hires (is that a TV show?) should make clear why he's our 10-year coach.

Any elite or near-elite program is going to have other programs offering promotions or other attractive conditions to its talented staff.  Harbaugh can attract top coaches from elsewhere when it happens.

During WW II, a group of Michigan coaches slips behind enemy lines on a dangerous covert mission to kill Hitler's dog, Blondi. Above average.

Home Run Spencer or Elston, grab an elite recuirter/coach of a rival

Sleeper Baker from Msu, amazing job considering schedule. I credit him more than Shoop. Big contrast to what Shoop achieved at Tennessee where one Brady hoke was the d line coach. Baker has a sellable background to recuirts as a 19 year NFL coaching vet, and has held his own recuirting rankings wise

Coach will pick someone NOT on Mgoblogs radar.  He is mysterious in that way... always trying to keep us on our toes... or maybe his football world is a little more larger than ours.

Jerry Montgomery or Mike Trgovac would both be good hires, Montgomery the better recruiter and Trgovac perhaps the better overall coach.

I wonder if maybe the Gattis and Campanile hires have taken some of the importance away from the new DL being a dynamite recruiter as many on Tuesday night were speculating.

Gattis + Campanile > Mattison + Washington

Don’t see why everyone wants to be a smart ass about this it’s a legitimate question. Our DL has massive question marks especially on the interior. If we can get a coach who can do for the DL what Warriner did for the OL, it’ll make a massive difference. Paye, Hutchinson, and Uche all flashed potential but they were extremely inconsistent. The interior lacks both a star and depth. Honestly have no idea why people aren’t taking this more seriously.

You have no idea why more people aren't taking this seriously?

Well, here's a few guesses:

Daily threads about this.

We're FANS--we have NOTHING to do with the process.

If we did, it would be a disaster.

We really know NOTHING about Harbaugh, who or what kind of assistant he likes, with whom he will or will not be able to tolerate, or how much money is available.

Who would want to come to Michigan, what, if any, are the recruiting restraints (GPA, High and Mighty Michigan Standards, etc).

Who would want to come here if they can NEVER EVER cheat or pay players.

Really? Take this more seriously? Why? After two games the guy will be a hero, then when Ohio State scores 1200 points, he will be a goat.
