A couple?  Or one?

Harbaugh was hired ~Dec 28 2014, so you can't put the #37 2015 class (by 247) on him.  2016 & 2017 were 8th & 5th. The 22nd 2018 class was not at the collective level we need.  We can't afford another one of those.

We're sitting at 11th right now, so the sky has yet to start falling.

Bama, Clemson, OU, and tOSU have taken 14 of the 20 spots to date.  Georgia seems to be joining this club of teams that are perennially in the mix come November.

Florida State, Oregon, and Michigan State have fallen. Notre Dame's in the CFP this year, but two years ago they were 4-8.I'd place ND in the next group along with Michigan, and maybe Washington & LSU.  I think USC & Penn St fell out of this second tier bunch this year.

And as a tangent, IMO, anyone suggesting that Michigan should replace Harbaugh is making a foolish statement.  Remember when RichRod, Charlie Strong, Ty Willingham, etc were rising stars?  I'm sure there are others.  When you take a chance on a rising star, you're more likely to fall out of the top ten than to improve.  You don't get better by getting worse.

Sometimes the players have to fight what is obvious to the fans.  Michigan has done this before, while Florida is bound to be motivated to avoid going 0-3 against Michigan.  (Although that feeling didn't help us against OSU.)

What should motivate those that will return is the competition for 2019 PT.  For those in the NFL draft mix that choose to play, their play is going on tape.  For those not returning and not in the NFL draft mix, it's their last football hurrah.

Exactly.  We're playing 2019 without Rashan Gary, so Rashan giving up his PT will benefit the 2019 team.

Good luck, Rashan.  You represented the University of Michigan well.  College careers are limited.  Of course, part of me is sad that the time has come for Rashan to move on, but there's no one to blame but Father Time. I have no problem with this decision.

Yes, it's a saturated market problem.  A good one to have for the leagues.

ESPN didn't recognize it early enough and overpaid for broadcast rights.

12/02/2018 - 1:15pm In other yet-to-be…

In other yet-to-be-determined meaningless orderings, does UCF get #7 as a token bone thrown to the Knights?  Or do they stay #8 as a STFU already ordering?

I think they get #7, perhaps as a marginal marketing hype maneuver for their bowl game.  The fan base that will watch Michigan needs no rankings-boost marketing hype.

12/02/2018 - 1:06pm #5 versus #6 is meaningless…

#5 versus #6 is meaningless.  If I was a committee member, I would have voted Georgia #5 & OSU #6 entirely for political reasons, to minimize the push back from the one-loss conference champ that got left out.

12/02/2018 - 1:02pm Operative word is "probably"…

Operative word is "probably".

Georgia has had its at-bat.  Time to let others take a swing.

Why should Bama have to beat Georgia twice?  And recall 2014.  The SEC West dominated the college football rankings without any validation against non-SEC teams.  What happened to the top 5 SEC West teams in their bowls?  They all lost.

12/02/2018 - 12:50pm In hindsight, Georgia at #5…

In hindsight, Georgia at #5 and OSU at #6 should have also been obvious as a political ordering.

How do you diffuse the push back from the one-loss conference champion that got left out?  Give them a meaningless #6 ranking (versus #5).

12/02/2018 - 12:29pm I'm guessing Oklahoma is the…

I'm guessing Oklahoma is the fourth for political reasons.

If it's Georgia, there's going to be extreme pressure to expand.  Plus, I'd point to 2014.  "NFL-lite" was bandied about for the SEC West, as the back-loaded schedules and the SEC-bias allowed the SEC West to dominate the rankings throughout the season.  What happened to the top 5 teams in the SEC West that year?  They all lost.

Which leaves a jump ball between Oklahoma & OSU.  Which of the B1G & B12 got the possession the last time?  It was the B1G over the B12 in 2014 with OSU chosen over TCU & Baylor.  So I'm thinking the possession arrow goes to the B12 this year and Oklahoma.

There might be less emotional baggage after getting blown out versus losing a close one.  In 2016, the team had to let go of coulda/woulda/shoulda (been in the CFP).  There's absolutely no coulda/woulda/shoulda this year.

Of course, if a player has checked out mentally for the NFL, it doesn't make any difference.

Even if OSU doesn't make the playoff, we're the top ranked two-loss P5 team at #8 in both polls that came out today and we'll be in a quality bowl. (Washington State is the only other P5 team with two losses)

(intentional repeat of post on previous page.  With adequate QB play in 2017, Michigan blows out OSU and Haskins play is in garbage tieme.)

Brian didn't post the "Gravestone" article because of that last one interception.  Wide open receivers were missed time and time again throughout the game.  A good number of them dinks to the flat or over the middle that the QB of the champion intermural team could have completed.  With merely an adequate QB performance in 2017, Michigan blows out OSU and Haskins play is in garbage time.

https://mgoblog.com/content/gravestone

That gameplan, man. The number of wide open receivers Michigan was able to scheme truly boggled. McKeon on a wheel route in the endzone; DPJ running an out well past the LB's zone drops on a rollout; Hill in the flat a couple times; Ty Wheatley on the first snap as Michigan revived that double fake screen play from a couple years back; Evans on infamy play. Harbaugh and the offensive braintrust could not have given Michigan a better shot at this game.

There will inevitably be complaints about a run-pass ratio of 29:39, but I don't know, man. If you've given your QB a wide open guy to throw to a few yards downfield and he doesn't do it, I don't know what to do with that. O'Korn performance in this game was so far beyond even his bad performances earlier in the season that I don't think it's reasonable to gameplan around that. Or even if you can. OSU entered this game with the #2 rush defense in the country; it's highly likely that a heavy run, I-form big gameplan is worse than what Michigan managed.

11/20/2018 - 8:53am I think the most important…

I think the most important aspect of a win guarantee is the impact or reflection of your own team.  When it is said to take credit for the win before the game is played (a false reassurance to your own ego), then it can be harmful.

When it is made as a rallying cry, such as Jim Harbaugh's in 1986 in the wake of a loss the week before, then it can have a positive effect.

Of course, it has a rallying effect on the other team, which in The Game is not that big of a deal in most years.  The other side is going to bring it anyway.

This year, however, I think OSU needs a rallying cry.  They've been playing like shit against so-so teams, and the guarantee gives them a concrete rallying point to put doubts about their play behind them and make themselves believe they can win.

I don't think it will matter, but I don't think it's going to be helpful.

Matt Canada has gotten too cute and it's cost him points by stalling drives built on the run game.  Just keep running it until OSU shows they can stop it.

When you have the overwhelmingly better team, minimizing the number of key plays is the way to go in the first half.

Last week, Harbaugh punted on 4th & 2 or 3 from the Rutgers ~41 near the end of the first half up 21-7.  Michigan was on its way to victory, and there was no reason to give the Dud Knights the possibility of good field position.

Northwestern reentered the AP Poll at #24 and was just outside the Coaches at #26.

MSU's loss dropped them to #29 in the AP & #35 in the Coaches.  Methinks the coaches just looked at the score and voted accordingly.  I thought MSU was more likely to win down only 7-6 late in the third.  All OSU did was to keep pinning MSU to their own goalline with punts and wait for MSU to run the Sparty NO! play, and MSU obliged.  The final 26-6 score is very misleading.

Iowa fell to #35 in the AP and out of any consideration in the Coaches.  Wisky fell out of any consideration in the AP and to 41st in the Coaches. Purdue is now a 5-5 team that isn't sure to be bowl eligible with Wisky at home and @Indiana.

11/11/2018 - 2:31pm I think that James…

I think that James Laurinaitis gave away that the he and Kugler were just looking for an angle to keep viewers watching with his inconsistency.

First, he and Kugler talked up the significance of which backup would come in first, ignoring the obvious insignificance of the signal in garbage time.

Next, he expressed shock that Milton would be put in the game, using up one of his three-remaining non-redshirt blowing appearances.

I think the significance of Milton's appearance is that Peters is the backup for genuine competitive situations.  Otherwise, I don't think Harbaugh would blow one of those three on handoff plays.

Also, of note is that Milton changed numbers from 5 to 3.  With both wearing #5, Milton and Wangler couldn't be in the game at the same time.  Even if Milton is the #3 QB, the need and/or desire for Milton and Wangler to be in the game at the same time was sufficient for Harbaugh to have Milton switch numbers.
