Doesn’t the Mattison Move Reek of Desperation?

Submitted by Suavdaddy on January 8th, 2019 at 10:05 AM

I am stunned by the news and am shocked at Mattison. That being said, OSU’s best coaching hire for DC was to hire Michigan’s 70 year old position coach?

To me, this announces they feel in a position of weakness (for whatever reason) and will do whatever it takes to take the spotlight off themselves/insecurities.

The right response here is for Harbaugh to go on TV and laugh at their desperation - change the script. It’s their feeling of inferiority that caused this move. Take Hand.

The move reeks of Urban Meyer still pulling some of the strings, or having quite a bit of influence over Coach Day. Greg has a history with Meyer at Florida and Meyer wanted him as his DC when he first got to OSU. Now he'll spend his last few years in coaching helping to groom their other DC.

They get a DC to run the defense (Hafley) and then Mattison gets the title as well to coach the front 7 and recruit the hell out of Ohio, which boosts their recruiting 2 fold because it not only adds to their recruiting but greatly retracts from their rival's (mich) ability to recruit the area.

Not too difficult to see it's a huge win for OSU. If you think Mattison was brought in to scheme and manage the complete defense, you're not seeing the obvious.

I am not so sure Mattison is just going to come in as the DC, let someone else be in charge of the defense and then beat the bushes hard on the recruiting trail.  The guy is 70 years old and everything coming out of Schembechler Hall was that he was going to retire 5 years ago.  I what you say happens, then Day is a genius, but I just don't think it will be the case.

The hire is definitely odd and I said yesterday that I thought they would do way better than Mattison as DC, but I don't think there is an OSU coach, player or fan that feel they are in a position of weakness.  They are the most arrogant and annoying fanbase on the face of this earth.  There is no doubt they think Greg Mattison will be the greatest DC next year and that Day is some sort of genius for pulling this off.

How long have you followed Michigan football?  Were you this shocked when he made a lateral move to ND?  Did you write a long letter to the editor of your local paper to convey your disbelief?

He's not irreplaceable. He's a 70 year old journeyman DL coach making a move back to DC.  We'll somehow recover.

Thanks I needed a good hearty laugh today. Can I have some of what you're drinking?

This is an epic fail of a thread.

I don’t think so. Mattison is dam good at what he does, regardless of age. Unless he has a health problem that hampers his abilities I’d be happy as a pig in shit to get him if I was a buckeye.

He's a DL coach though.  And they have the best DL coach in the country already.

If he's going to be the actual DC, meaning dictating the game-day scheme, that seems a very poor choice. Many OSU fans are perplexed by the move, with good reason.

The guy they hired from San Fran is going to be "the guy", and Mattison is there for credibility and recruiting.  Since they already recruit at an elite level, I don't see how this harms Michigan much.

Harbaugh and Michigan are not going to say anything about a former coach, because it's classless and the coaching profession is a small, insulated world.

That's why Webb said something to the effect that he was told that Michigan did not non-renew Mattison's contract and we wanted him.

Mattison is a very good DL coach and a decent DC, but Michigan needs to bring in fresh talent to recruit and introduce new ideas.

It isn't desperation for OSU either. They have their DC-in-waiting (regardless of what you think about him) who is young and will learn under Mattison and then Mattison will retire, a few million richer than if he stayed a DL coach at Michigan.

They’re taking two of our coaches (Greene is saying it sounds like Washington is taking the job).

Funny they say how our defense sucks and they dropped 60 on em then take two of the coaches from that defense.

Call Elston and Larry Foote.  If we need coaches that hate OSU to keep the players motivated, those two would do a fine job of that and coaching them up.

If by "desperation" you mean

"laughingly poking your finger in the eye of your defeated, bloodied, unconscious, emotionally scarred and nationally irrelevant arch-enemy who has only beaten you once in the last umpteen years and that loss was with your worst team in 20 years, meanwhile every time your arch enemy has a good year going and people think they could be relevant again you beat them by 30 just to show how completely average they are even when at their best"

Then sure .... it reeks of that.  The only desperation at OSU is desperation to take that final half-step to get them to Clemson/Bama levels.

Day knows he can win their fanbase over with this.

"We took all the coaches froX ScUM.  What is TTUN going to do without any coaches lol? Finish fourth in the division? Xichigan still sucks!"

Considering the defenses that Urban and Mattison had at Florida, this seems like a reasonable move. Also gives Mattison a chance to teach the other co-DC before retiring in a few years.

It's simple, Michigan lives rent free in their heads with everything. By this move, they are trying to bury the football program and take over the overall W/L record. But TBH, are we as fans really mad at Mattison leaving for a co-DC gig, even though it's to them? What if their defense becomes worse off with that hire? Plus, if he has a bad year with their defense and they wind up losing 3 games next season, the fan base will meltdown and call for Mattison's head. Let it all play out. I actually have faith Harbaugh will counter and this will light the fire in his ass to destroy them in Ann Arbor.

Bottom line is because of his age we were going to be losing him soon anyways. We just need to hit it out of the park with the coaches that we are replacing

I don’t think it’s an act of desperation I think it was a business decision for someone to get a raise and a promotion to finish out his career before he retires.

Assume Don Brown just left. Michigan just hired as DC the OSU Dline coach (not named Larry Johnson) that had Zero sacks againsts Michigan and was ranked 149th in recruiting in 2019 and in twilight of career what would Michigan fans say?  This board and twitter would melt down. I can't even begin to imagine some of the things people would say.

After reading the OP, I have a feeling of intrigue. Once Livers returns, we can start really getting weird with our lineups.

First, let me say that I like Austin Davis. He has a role here, even if it's hack Ethan Happ 5 times so he can brick some free throws. He's never going to be a lottery pick, but he's a RS Sophomore. Anybody writing him off is dumb. In two years, he's still going to be here banging in the paint, setting screens and just generally being another Jordan Morgan. Wish people would lay off him a bit.

That said, Johns is going to get there. Beilein is cramming him into games because he's on the verge. In about 10 more games, he's going to be comfortable and then you can sub out Teske not with Davis, but maybe with a Johns/Livers frontcourt that has potential to seriously stress defenses.

This team's going to keep getting better. Excited for next step Thursday.

Mattison is very well respected among football coaches and so what about the fact that he is approaching 70. Is age discrimination suddenly ok? He is a coach and at very high level and they make moves. Loyalty doesn't pay the bills and Mattison has put in a bunch of time for the University of Michigan actually being the only stabilizing force during the Brady Hoke years. He was offered to be the Co-Coordinator at OHIO STATE which is without a doubt a top four national powerhouse program in college football every year thanks to Tressel and Meyer. No wonder he jumped at it. Harbaugh offered him a 2 year contract extension as well. Michigan will survive and Brown will probably pull in someone he coached or worked for him in the past. That's if Brown doesn't take the Temple job. The only coaching position at Michigan that bothers me is Pep Hamilton and the amount of money he is making is staggering. The offense is fine but his play calling sequence SUCKS!!! as well as his passing game. No kid that plays receiver worth anything would want to play in that high school passing attack.

They trounced us last we played and we have 1 win over them in 15 years. You think we should laugh at THEIR desperation?

What desperation? They own us.

WTF are you smoking? Our hated rival, who has won SEVEN STRAIGHT against us and is four years removed from a national championship, poached one of our top recruiters (who also had two separate successful stints as our defensive coordinator), and this is somehow an indication of their desperation and inferiority?

DL has been a strength of this team since he took it over. Maybe he had 1-15 reasons to go to a school that beats the shit out of us over and over.

This, and Washington, are telling. Coaches don't leave at 70 because they are having too much fun and success.

As I posted earlier in response to someone, I initially thought this was an odd move for OSU to make but not it seems like this move was made to coach up Hafley. After the Hafley hire I have seen no less than 5 pro players (not OSU grads) who have said they'd take a bullet for the man or run thru a wall. This feels like a Day learning under Meyer feel. Mattison along with Larry Johnson teaching the younger coaches who have a feel for the new O's spells trouble for the B1G. The hits keep coming. Harbaugh needs to get off his ass and do something. Make a bold move and hire someone hot and up and coming. SOMETHING man. SOMETHING.

No.

It all comes down to recruiting and not losing what they have. Getting rid of Grinch was a good thing. Mattison and Washington are grade A talent recruiters. Smooth as silk.  Parents want their sons to play for such coaches.  And they are solid coaches in their own right.

Urban Meyer's ring & bling filled hand-shake will always be available to close the deal on any fence-sitting big 5-star recruit visitors whenever needed.

Ryan Day has Kevin Wilson at OC and has just hired a young, underrated QB coach in Shippenburg State's Mike Yurcich.  Yurcich is also a solid QB recruiter as well, and a Pennsylvania native who is going to give PSU fits on the recruiting trail.

So Urban is leaving Ohio State in very good shape and in capable hands of, young and experienced knights of the realm.

I am sure Harbaugh and Michigan have good replacements in mind, and hopefully will go a similar route of mixing youth and experience and recruiting prowess in the replacement coaching staff selection process.
