I guess he could have said something along the lines of Alabama has X spots and he needs to commit if he's going to take one of them.
December 12th, 2018 at 3:00 PM ^
You never know with Alabama. Maybe they told him all that stuff and then said: "flip now or we're moving on". I could see how that might make for a hasty commitment.

Its being reported on my Michigan pay website that this in fact is true that Dax is really reconsidering and one of the theories is that Bama may have used the rumors of Harbaugh to the NFL as ammo to help with the flip.
December 12th, 2018 at 2:43 PM ^
From what I have read about his character, and what Dax spoke about what Michigan offered as a school/environment (high standards of ethics). If he was slighted by negative recruiting it could be possible that he would have second thoughts about Alabama. IF that really is the case, this young man would show serious mettle if he went against the grain to flip back. Kind of intriguing to say the least.
December 12th, 2018 at 2:47 PM ^
Sam's report basically just establishes that a re-flip is possible.
There's stuff that goes on with CBs, too--I don't know when this guy put his in for Bama, but if it was late and he gets no credit for it anyway, a flip just on speculation might be just a low-percentage play at getting a better percentage rating. Some guys are pretty open that they flip their CBs on small amounts of info, just in case, since being the last person to be "right" has little value.
This could just be speculation by the flipper.

I'm sure Cocaine Cris wasn't the mastermind behind that one. Simply the one media guy duplicitous enough to provide cover for all the anti-Harbaugh jive turkeys.
December 12th, 2018 at 2:40 PM ^
I’m starting to believe this situation is starting to have some legs....I think Dax got some bad info, made a knee jerk reaction (he’s 18 let’s give him a break) and now that he has some clarity on the whole situation, Michigan is genually where he wants to be and he might pull a Harrison where he never really decommits or recommits but just sends his LOI to Michigan and shows up. I’m sure him changing his mind publicly to only end up going back to where he originally committed may be a little embarressing and he could get some heat for it. We will know for sure in February when ink hits the paper.
December 12th, 2018 at 3:20 PM ^
I mean, they could have said we have credible sources (the football world is small) that both Harbaugh and Don Brown are gone next year, and have been leading you on...

I always find it interesting the modern recruiting coverage has led to an apparent increase in people being balled.
In all seriousness though, this is interesting, to say the least.
December 12th, 2018 at 3:15 PM ^
Unless they changed how Crystal Balls work, you don't lose points for switching to a flip after someone commits (and don't gain/keep points for keeping your pick on the eventual school). In other words there's no point penalty for flipping a crystal ball and it makes sense if your goal is points (which it shouldn't be but for some people it is a goal). If that's changed then it may be significant, otherwise it's nothing.

Feel bad for the kid either way, all of these top recruits really.
They probably should be getting paid in an NFL feeder league so they can focus 100% of their energy on being the best, and SAFEST NFL player, but ...alas NCAA needs their pound of flesh, so we get kids flat out lied to.
F'n Great.
Good Luck to all of 'em, as the enter the den of vultures.
December 12th, 2018 at 3:40 PM ^
Hey didn't know Mark Emmert had an account!
December 12th, 2018 at 3:56 PM ^
The NFL benefits from NCAA football nearly as much as the NCAA. They get a free development league - schools (through ticket, mdse sales) pay for the coaches, workout facilities, etc. - NFL doesn't have to pay for anything and gets to audition the best players for at least 3 years. The players should be compensated for their work, but I'm not sure an NFL feeder league is necessary.
December 12th, 2018 at 4:14 PM ^
I agree, which is why I think the NFL should be paying for that feeder league for those "best" players, maybe 150-200 a year; plus, paying for a full 4 year scholarship for any player that isn't drafted.
That will cut off the top heavy nature of college sports, make it much more competitive, a lot more fun to watch and still give plenty of opportunities for student athletes to earn a professional career.
December 12th, 2018 at 6:40 PM ^
I think a portion of kids are not really all that interested in school, and this in turn leads to a lot of the shenanigans surrounding college football. NFL should absolutely create a feeder league. They’ve had a free feeder league forever, and IMO it’s high time it’s stopped. It’s every bit as bad as getting stadiums built on the taxpayers’ dime (a habit that is thankfully fading). Kids who want to get paid would then have an option to do that, without the facade of going to school. Baseball and European soccer clubs pay for developmental leagues. Kids who genuinely want an education have that option too. The quality of college teams may diminish slightly, but that won’t be significant because everyone is in the same boat. The current baseball model should be workable for football too. College baseball is still thriving, and I suspect there’s less under the table stuff going on than in football, because kids have an option of going directly to the minors out of high school.

What if Saban/Alabama pushed hard on DB and Harbaugh leaving and Hill believed them and promptly flipped. And now that Harbaugh is staying out, and seems plausible DB wont be going to Temple he wants to come back to Michigan? Or maybe I just want to believe
December 12th, 2018 at 4:26 PM ^
I'd be shocked if this were actually the case. Not shocked that Alabama would TRY that path of course. But I'd be shocked if the Hill family wouldn't at least check back w/ JH and Michigan first before pulling the plug if that were truly one of the major or THE major concern.
Word was that Michigan was totally blindsided by the flip. Which means either the Hills are one of the most unthorough and impulsive recruits I've ever seen, or it was likely something else.
December 12th, 2018 at 5:38 PM ^
Not necessarily. The theory, above in this thread, makes a lot of sense:
1. Saban tells Hill that Harbaugh is going to the NFL and they really want him but don't have a lot of slots.
2. The next day reports of Harbaugh to the NFL come out.
3. Soon after Saban tells Hill, he has to have a yea or nay right away as he is out of slots.
4. Hill and family decide to flip.

The recruiting roundup today was quite interesting....Sam knows some deep intel, obviously he does, and is dropping huge hints that it will all make sense after the ink is dry.
Weird, but whatever, Dax cmon back!
December 12th, 2018 at 3:33 PM ^
Look, I'm skeptical as well. If I had to guess it's still gonna be bama. But a couple of things:
- With regards to the people saying "he's trolling", 247 is a serious company (or at least takes itself pretty seriously) and would probably not allow something like this to happen, I really doubt that's Birmingham's motivation
- I think the more likely scenario is that he saw some super deep message board counter-strike-esque information similar to what is being discussed on this thread involving a current OSU commit that is being told that Dax Hill is flipping back to Michigan and decided that he could score some 247 points by flipping his prediction back (not exactly sure how the scoring system works but you get more points for being right when not a lot of people are).
I guess my point is he flipped his pick, so he either believes his sources, or he is playing the 247 crystal ball game. Personally, I would still doubt Dax ends up here, but like i said in another thread, it's recruiting, anything can happen.
