Does Urb leaving hurt their recruiting?

Absolutely. Urban is probably the best direct recruiter of any head coach. Saban is the best organizer/manager of a recruiting system, but a Urban is fantastic at closing with the recruits that he personally targets.

So expect OSU to go from A+ to A or A- and still beat or match UM on the recruiting trail.

I think Urban leaving HELPS them recruit, unfortunately.

Urban was a snake and some parents, particularly moms, may have been uncomfortable sending their sons to play for someone who covered up criminal and unsavory activity by his players and coaches alike.

Meanwhile, OSU put a better product on the field when Day was coaching the team.

I'm happy Urbs is gone, but sad that I believe they are replacing him with potentially an upgrade. Fuck everyone in scarlet and grey.

The level that Urban kept OSU at since he was hired will place a tremendous amount of pressure on Day going forward. Since the OSU fan base is as critical as ours when we beat them next year they will be calling Day “Fickell II”” and that will reduce their recruiting ranking. 

There is a big difference between being an oc or dc to becoming a head coach and in charge of everything. There have been several instances of failure once elevated to head coach. Can anybody say Charlie Weiss.

I am sure Schiano and Wilson - both former HC's - love being passed over by someone with less experience and frankly less success. I am guessing this is a good time for Larry Johnson to retire.

OSU player contracts guarantee a 5K bonus and 10% salary increase in case of coaching change. So most will look at this as a positive. 

I don't think people realize that many years the difference between the #2 ranked class and the #10 rated class is the same as the difference between the #10 rated class and the #40 rated class.  It's really top heavy in recruiting.  There were classes recently where Urban and Saban each pulled 13+ top 100 players where we pulled 1 or 2 top 100 players.

Urban leaving is great for us, bad for the Big Ten conference though.

I never understood how OH and PA produce so much more talented High School football players than MI. MI is a blue collar state, you would think with nearly 10 M population we would turn out as much talent as OH, even though OH has a few more million in population. It seem like Michigan was way ahead of other states with the game of football in the 19th century and that should have lead to our high schools developing great football programs and talent through the 20th century.

People calling OSU's 2019 class "mediocre" are fooling themselves. The reason it's ranked as low as it is on 247 is due to its size, which currently is 15 commits. 

In terms of average star rating per recruit, OSU is 3rd in the country, behind only Alabama and Georgia.

It has to hurt as none of the other coaches are at the same level of his ability to recruit. jmo

I see people talking about underestimating OSU. I don’t think that it is the problem. I think the problem is that we tend to overestimate Michigan.

Of course it does, already has this fall.

Now add the fact that they have been fumbling in the state of Ohio since the Danny Clark situation to the loss of the national cache of "Urban Meyer", they will definitely come down from the heights they have occupied the last 2-3 years.

And depending on how long the Ohio kids hold a grudge it could get real low, but they seem to always rally for OSU eventually.

It won't help but I doubt it hurts a ton.  

I mean...probably.  But it'll drop from like an A to an A-.  Its Ohio State.  They are well stocked with talent, churn out pros regardless of coaching staffs, and they are set up for long term success.  Its not like recruits are suddenly NOT going to want to go there.

Hell...if they dump Schiano and replace him and some of their other defensive coaches with people that actually know what they are doing, there's a chance they get even better.  Day is a hell of an offensive coach, so its not like they are going to slip there.

OSU with Ryan Day has three losses next year and four the following year.   ...and then he's fired.

For now, I don’t think so. Not in a big way anyway. Day is not going to go away from what’s worked and the foundation Meyer put in place. There may be a kid or two that decommits, but I doubt it’ll have an enormous impact this year. Emphasis on THIS year. 

If they don’t play well next year, lose a couple of games, or even lose to Michigan, then yeah, the wheels of that machine will start falling off. But until then, probably business as usual for the most part. 

Who is ready for them to have a Fickell style down year and then bring in Tom Herman? Just so the damn trend can continue of falling backwards into great coaches. 

It WILL help them move up from 12th this year, but it's possible UM actually has a higher ranking this year.

It will definitely hurt them in the following years unless Day has zero or one loss in the B1G next year.

Maybe a bit this year, but they are a well oiled machine that seems impervious to coaching turmoil, scandals, etc.

I mean, it can't help it.  Players committed to the guy who's won a billion games and pumps out pros. He's not there any more, so they may be more inclined to look around some.  

I know I put my crystal ball somewhere, but for the life of me I can’t find it. Experience suggests that OSU is a superb program where top talent gets plugged into the machine year after year.

Going beyond that is pure speculation.
