Actually though, the only thing that I saw today that bothered me was when I noticed on the blocked punt/Gedeon TD that Funchess is on the punt return team. Ummmm.... why???

beacuase he had an awesome block on the return.
August 30th, 2014 at 4:13 PM ^
As opposed to up in the box. I like the fact he's there on the sideline to talk to Devin and other offensive players when they come off the field. It seems he can also see little things more easily. Of course, I'm sure he's still relying on a few guys up in the box to spot for him. But this is a good thing I think which should help things go more smoothly this season.

Aside from some blitzy stuff, both sides of the ball tasted like unflavored Greek yogurt..

He doesn't play there. Ok, I know what you mean, but I don't want our best player getting knocked out of a game because he's blocking for a PR and gets clocked somehow. I think it's a legit question at least.

By my count, we had 55 offensive plays, 69 defensive plays and 33 special teams plays.
August 30th, 2014 at 6:06 PM ^
The impact of a punt on field position is much greater than a typical offensive/defensive play, though, so I don't know if you can just look at the total number like that.

wanted to see him get the td for it.
August 30th, 2014 at 3:35 PM ^
Sunday is for studying the game film.
I'm sure special attention will be paid to improve our "challenge" play calling and adjustments will be made and we will get better.
August 30th, 2014 at 4:11 PM ^
If he wanted Smith to get the TD why did he take him out when play resumed?
Smith >>> Green
August 30th, 2014 at 5:54 PM ^
Green had done most of the work to get there. He deserved a chance at a TD, too.
I think what the above poster is saying (and I agree) is that Hoke thought there was a chance Smith could get rewarded with a TD if they reviewed it, so he gave it a shot.
August 30th, 2014 at 5:56 PM ^
But if I was Hoke, it would have been about rewarding that specific run and the challenge was a strong way of showing that Hoke was pleased.
Plus, both Green and Smith earned a td on that drive anyways. Green with the long run and Smith with the Caterpillar driving.
I liked both the backs (after Green settled down. That first drive wasn't pretty).

Put it this way, if it weren't a cupcake team and we weren't up a billion, game on the line, I'd want them to challenge.

I've seen less definitive stuff get overturned before. Potential 7 point swing vs a TO, it's worth a shot.
August 30th, 2014 at 5:57 PM ^
I thought it looked like a TD but wasn't certain. With the benefit of multiple angles and slow-mo, which we did not have, the referees could well have found a view that showed him scoring.
Anyway, you can't take your challenges with you into week 2, so in a 35-point game, there's not likely to be a better time to use it than then.

Im still not a fan of Hoke after years of trying! Nuss is in his first year and he wants DB to be in there every play. Hoke needed to be the head coach and say noway.

Nuss on the sideline is awesome. Can talk to players face to face, congratulate them and cheer them on. Obviously can't do that from the box.

"I am not Al Borges" - Doug Nussmeier
Seriously, nice to see the play calling match our abilities, both strengths and weaknesses. Really thought he took full advantage of our weapons and took some pressure off of our OL. I love the instant feedback he gives to the QBs when they came off the field, I really think that's going to make them better players faster than a phone call from the booth.
Mattison's defense was as advertised while the game mattered. They were some completely overmatched against our D so I'm not sure it mattered.
August 30th, 2014 at 7:39 PM ^
I gave you a +1 after just reading the title. Yes, that.
So great to see coherent and aggressive gameplans on both sides of the ball!
August 30th, 2014 at 3:29 PM ^
I thought spreading it out early was going great and then they sorted of went in a shell and did a lot of pro-style - sometimes with 3 TEs.
I suppose they're probably just trying out a bunch of stuff, but I hope we stay more spread out. We're not going to be able to run it down every team's throat like we did today

August 30th, 2014 at 3:38 PM ^
covered the spread. I think that is terrific coaching.
August 30th, 2014 at 3:39 PM ^
DG98 had a great line, but he's shown that capability before. Still, it was nice to hear about the Qb position being coached up over the last few months and it's nice to have a 5th year guy at QB with his athleticism. I like that we have a QB coach on the sidelines.
I didn't like the QB keeper in the 3rd QTR, but overall a well called game: pass and spread it around to set up the run in the 2nd QTR. Given our strengths and experience, that's the way to go.

seemed like a really bad call to me- he just jumped over the guys and got flipped.

I believe it is illegal to jump over the mini-wall right in front of the punter. Not 100% sure, can anyone else confirm?

Some peeps questioned that timeout Hoke took near the goal line. I also thought there was no need to play either Devin that deep into the game. Up 35..if they got injured, Hoke would have been toasted on here.
But these are first world problems.
August 30th, 2014 at 4:58 PM ^
running Gardner on his last drive, that seemed kind of needless.
August 30th, 2014 at 6:02 PM ^
We pulled them before the third quarter was over. That's not very late. These guys need game reps - it's week 1 after all.
