I've got Walton, Caris, Irvin, Donnal, and Mitch starting. Spike backing up Walton, Chatman backing up the 2-4 spots, and Donnal and Bielfeldt (I guess) playing about 10 minutes a night backing up Mitch at the 5.

Novak never ever played the 5. But yeah you're right, he had effective teams that were pretty good, much the same as we would be next year without Mitch. We'd still be pretty good. But if we wanted to be REALLY good (the standard we've built the last two years and want to keep going), you need to have that center. You can't beat the best teams without one.

Beilein is great, but even he needs a guy or two that is capable of playing center in the Big Ten

Wishing Glenn all the best! It's been a thrilling two years, due in large part to his unpredictable highflying slams. Under appreciated by Michigan fans in my opinion. What he did every night was not easy.
On another note, wow we really need Mitch...

Even if everyone came back, we would still have room to keep Horford, assuming we put Hatch on medical redshirt (which we might do anyway)

This was definitely not Beilein's decision...
|5 days 10 hours ago||But on the other other||
But on the other other hand... this is bad news for GR3 looking to play more at the 3. Playing Mitch and Jon at the same time was supposed to be a part of that, with Donnal also in the mix.
|5 days 10 hours ago||I guess on the other hand...||
I guess on the other hand... this could be good news for McGary-based speculation? If Jon was hearing that Mitch was leaving, he would be the only true 5 man left. Would be in line for some huge minutes.

PS: I love in the opening clip how everyone is participating, especially Mitch, except Horford, who just has this amused look on his face the whole time. Classic Jon.

Great video. Wow have I had fun watching Michigan basketball play these last 2-3 years. Easily my favorite team to follow over that time period.

This is a big deal in my opinion. It's like a mini season before the real season, all against top notch competition (as compared to what they play in college)

|1 week 5 days ago||True but it's all about if||
True but it's all about if you can make up the loss in offense by the improved defense and rebounding. Becoming a more complete team. And who knows for sure if it would, but it's nice to at least have the option. It all depends on match ups that other teams present as well.
|1 week 5 days ago||If Mitch could play the 4||
If Mitch could play the 4 effectively in Beilein's offense, which I bet he could with some work, I agree with you. And wow would that make our team all the more better. No more getting outrebounded, at all.
|1 week 5 days ago||I agree. The only team I see||
I agree. The only team I see that could potentially have more talent than us is Duke, and that's only if Parker comes back.
Sneaky thing about this past Michigan team too: Our best player was definitely Stauskas, hands down. But I would argue that our most important player was actually Caris. We could have survived without Nik: the offense would have been worse, but it still would have been fine. More of the load just would have shifted to Caris and Glenn to create. And Nik, while improving his defense, was still never great. I don't think we could have survived without Caris. We NEEDED him to guard the other team's best wing player all game every game, because we didn't have anyone else that could do it. Our defense would have been torn to shreds without Caris almost every game. When you throw in that he made up a big portion of the offense, too, I think he was the most important player on the team.
|1 week 5 days ago||If only Stauskas leaves, and||
If only Stauskas leaves, and Robinson and McGary both come back, I think next year's team has the potential to be the best all around team we've had yet in the Beilein era. And that's seriously saying something.
PG - Walton should have the breakout year we've come to expect from 2nd year point guards under Beilein hopefully, with Spike solidly backing him up.
SG - Caris for basically the whole game, save a couple minutes. Not a lot of depth here, but Caris already played like 38 minutes a game in any big game we had this past year anyway. Caris is already really good, and even after attending Camp Sanderson last summer, he still kinda looks like a stick figure out there. Put 10-15 more pounds of muscle on him and watch out. Potential All-BigTen player next year for sure.
SF - Irvin, backed up by GR3 and Chatman. I definitely see Irvin having a breakout year next year. He reminds me a lot of freshman Stauskas: deadeye shooter, and you could tell they had the potential to put the ball on the floor and create as well but they were just a little bit away from being able to do it effectively. A summers worth of hard work and he will be a seriously good player.
PF - Robinson, backed up by Donnal, McGary, and maybe Chatman some. I think Robinson would end up splitting his time about 50/50 between SF and PF. I know he would want to start at the 3, but I think Irvin might be too good to leave on the bench. But at the same time, we could leave Irvin on the bench for some instant offense and start either both McGary and Horford, or start Donnal if he's ready. GR3 would surely be putting in the work to make sure he is ready to land in the first round in the 2015 draft, and I think he'd have a big year as well.
C - McGary, backed up by Horford. I'm sure some of the time we'd see two of Mitch, Jon, and Donnal on the court at the same time. We all know what a healthy Mitch is capable of: being one of the best centers in all of college basketball. Horford would be a very solid back up option as well, and Donnal could probably play here in a pinch.
Wow is that a lot of talent. When you throw in the fact that this team would have senior Trey and junior Nik if they weren't, well, Trey and Nik, Beilein has done a fantastic job.
|2 weeks 1 hour ago||I can't even deal with how||
I can't even deal with how good we could potentially be next year. The NBA Draft declare or stay period has quickly become one of the most nerve wracking times of the year for me.
I don't even know why I'm getting my hopes up that this means something good, but I can't help it. This Stauskas tweet from tonight probably means absolutely nothing one way or the other, but it's worth sharing.
@NStauskas11: "This Block M is special man! #GoBlue"
Even if Nik leaves, but Glenn and Mitch come back, I still think our next year's team has the potential to be the best team out of our past three years. And that is seriously saying something.

Last year was like your first time at Cedar Point. You hop on the biggest ride and there's nothing like it. You have no idea what to expect and it won't ever be the same again, because you've already experienced it. This year is like your 2nd or 3rd time on the ride. You know what to expect so it takes some of the shock out of it, but it's still really fun.
