OT? My onfield experience at 2004 Rosebowl. Falk, Songgirls!

Submitted by CygnusX1111 on April 13th, 2021 at 4:49 PM

This is my first post so please be gentle!

I've been a member since the early days of this blog but rarely post. I have been wanting to post this but never had 100 points.

Graduated from UM in 1996

This is a 100% true story.  It is one of the best times of my life and it still seems surreal and like a dream.

My childhood friend had a connection with the football program for many years. We are still friends to this day. He knows I am a fan. He called me up and asked me if I wanted to go to the game and be on the field. He had been in LA for a few days and was bored as his work was complete for the most part. Of course I said yes. This was about week before the game.

I bought a airplane ticket and was in LA the next evening and was scheduled to leave the morning after the game. He said he could take care of lodging. When I arrived I found out I was staying at the same hotel as the players/coaches. He introduced me to Lloyd Carr and Jon Falk. Falk was definitely a character! He asked what I was doing while there and when I replied nothing he barked to my friend, "good! Frank, bring him to work tomorrow Joe is sick." I was stunned and said that I didn't think I was qualified and he replied," You have degree from Michigan? You will be fine. There's no free lunch here!" The next day I was at practice handing out equipment. It was amazing to see them practicing and I couldn't get over how everyone was a giant! The players were massive.

The day of the game arrives and my friend gives me my onfield pass and said he would see me after the game as he had to work. I asked what I was supposed to do and the only thing he said was make sure you stay out of the way and that Jon told him to have me help after the game. I was so grateful for the amazing experience I had over the last few days I said of course I would help.

The game itself was pretty good and was a treat to see eye level on the field. First half thought we could still win, 2nd half the wheels fell off. I made sure to stay at least 30 yards from the team. Basically I stayed in the corner endzone leaning against the wall during the game. You can see me in the broadcast.

During the game the USC songirls would periodically come around and perform their dances. One time I noticed one was looking at me. I winked and she gave me a smile. Towards the end of the game they came around again and I approached her and started chatting her up. She asked what I was doing after the game and did I want to go to a party? I thought about it for a split second and, knowing I was supposed to work after the game with my friend, said of course I want to go. She gave me the address.

I found my friend after the game told him my luck and that I will not be helping. He said Jon will be annoyed if I don't help. I told him that was his problem and that I'm leaving.

The party was amazing with all her songgirl friends. We had a great time and ended up getting busy. I was up until 5:30am and my flight was at 8:30. I told her I have to go to catch my flight. She said why don't you stay the weekend and go back monday? So that's what I did and that weekend was one of the the most memorable of my life. She was a really amazing person and we are friends on facebook.

I contacted my friend later and asked if Falk noticed that I was not there. He said yes that man doesn't miss anything. He told me that he explained the situation later and Falk's reply was, " He left us to go hang out with a songgirl? Well I guess I can't blame him as if I was 30 years younger and unmarried I would have made the same choice!" I later sent a note to Jon thanking him for the amazing experience. I received a 5 word response. " You owe me 3 hours"

This story still brings a smile to my face!

"The party was amazing with all her songgirl friends. We had a great time and ended up getting busy. I was up until 5:30am..."

I find myself re-reading this over and over and creating more and more intriguing visions in my head.  But the guy in the story is me.  Sorry.

What a story. Pretty amazing. I was actually at that game too, last time I went to the Rose Bowl. Actually, last time Michigan went to the Rose Bowl! But um, no stories to tell like that!

And, now, for the rest of the story...

The two of you got married and then remained in Southern California, where you worked for a few years in law enforcement...before moving to a farm in Northern Michigan...where you raised a large family, including two Black boys that you adopted.

Then, you got kicked off MGoBlog for posting Covid disinformation and posing as a Black guy but came back under this new user name?

(Too soon?)

Happened to read the meta thread before it got nuked. Basically, it seems that Ace got fed up with XM and his constantly crossing the line with the covid misinformation/disinformation stuff and sent him to bolivian.

Some are complaining that Ace is power-hungry and that XM is a poor victim. Others are confused to learn that XM isn't black. Others think XM deserved it for months of increasingly wack comments on covid and politics.

I have no dog in this fight and my stereotypical skin color should be pretty apparent (and no, I'm not a white guy who adopted asian kids or anything).

There was a thread maybe two years ago where people explained their usernames/avatars and their significance. I believe that XM posted on that thread re: his username, that he want black but has adopted black children and his pic/username were in honor of them. He also made mention of this fact several other times when it was appropriate.

I am sad to see what happened with him. If he was banned for “pretending to be black”, people weren’t paying really close attention. Setting aside politics and everything else that seems to make people irrational and crazy, he seemed like a really good and genuine person and I will miss him. Hope he makes a return.

I guess with good reason everything has been wiped.  It was a low point in Mgoblog history with Ace bragging about using xtramelanin's email to track him down and realize he wasn't black.  Anybody who paid much attention to his posts realized he wasn't black nor claiming to be.  He's a white former UM hockey player who with his wife adopted some black children and lives on a farm in northern Michigan. I guess the people who didn't like his politics never paid much attention to all the personal information he revealed and only focused on his user name and avatar and assumed he was black. To use "he was pretending to be black" (and his email to track him down) as one of the reasons for banning him made Ace and the blog by extension look like bufoons.

I have been visiting the blog multiple times each day for almost ten years...and am especially drawn to the threads that are more focused on everyone's personal lives...in addition to also enjoying anything related to sports.

I've read many of XM's personal stories about his family, kids, farm, etc.

I had always assumed he was Black...and had no idea the kids were adopted.

I'm not saying he was "posing as black," but he is (was?) a very prolific member of this community...and it is clear that many (most?) of us assumed he was Black.   There has to be a reason so many of us made this assumption.

My recollection is that when he mentioned playing hockey at Michigan, he would mention that there were no Black players on the team.  I took that to mean that he was the only Black player.  Why would he mention that fact if he were White?  What's the point of pointing out the lack of Black players?

He seems like a very devoted family man and passionate about many things...but something has always seemed "off" about XM to me.

That being said, I do think Ace's tweets regarding this issue weren't appropriate.

As a Michigan Grad and a USC Season Ticket Holder, I appreciate this story.

My friend’s sister was a song girl back then when I was in law school.  She used to bring her friends to our parties...song girls were legit back then.

What a great story and weekend!

I went to three Rose Bowls as a student, 2004, 2006, 2007. The only thing I remember was pain, hangover, and the hot co-eds from the opposing schools.

Good story.

Since you seem like you have fewer regrets than a man should have, I'll cruelly point out that if you had bothered to show up to pay him back the 3 hours at some practice the next fall, you probably could've done it all again the next trip.

I was also at that game. The one where Braylon shot his mouth off in the press about how great he and our D was. Then he proceeded to drop a bomb that hit him in his hands just before the half if I recall correctly. Killed any mo we may have had.

In and around those years, when messing around with the football in my buddies back yard with his kids, when one of them would drop a pass, the others would all call him Braylon!!!

Cool story bro day...
