OT? My onfield experience at 2004 Rosebowl. Falk, Songgirls!

Submitted by CygnusX1111 on April 13th, 2021 at 4:49 PM

This is my first post so please be gentle!

I've been a member since the early days of this blog but rarely post. I have been wanting to post this but never had 100 points.

Graduated from UM in 1996

This is a 100% true story.  It is one of the best times of my life and it still seems surreal and like a dream.

My childhood friend had a connection with the football program for many years. We are still friends to this day. He knows I am a fan. He called me up and asked me if I wanted to go to the game and be on the field. He had been in LA for a few days and was bored as his work was complete for the most part. Of course I said yes. This was about week before the game.

I bought a airplane ticket and was in LA the next evening and was scheduled to leave the morning after the game. He said he could take care of lodging. When I arrived I found out I was staying at the same hotel as the players/coaches. He introduced me to Lloyd Carr and Jon Falk. Falk was definitely a character! He asked what I was doing while there and when I replied nothing he barked to my friend, "good! Frank, bring him to work tomorrow Joe is sick." I was stunned and said that I didn't think I was qualified and he replied," You have degree from Michigan? You will be fine. There's no free lunch here!" The next day I was at practice handing out equipment. It was amazing to see them practicing and I couldn't get over how everyone was a giant! The players were massive.

The day of the game arrives and my friend gives me my onfield pass and said he would see me after the game as he had to work. I asked what I was supposed to do and the only thing he said was make sure you stay out of the way and that Jon told him to have me help after the game. I was so grateful for the amazing experience I had over the last few days I said of course I would help.

The game itself was pretty good and was a treat to see eye level on the field. First half thought we could still win, 2nd half the wheels fell off. I made sure to stay at least 30 yards from the team. Basically I stayed in the corner endzone leaning against the wall during the game. You can see me in the broadcast.

During the game the USC songirls would periodically come around and perform their dances. One time I noticed one was looking at me. I winked and she gave me a smile. Towards the end of the game they came around again and I approached her and started chatting her up. She asked what I was doing after the game and did I want to go to a party? I thought about it for a split second and, knowing I was supposed to work after the game with my friend, said of course I want to go. She gave me the address.

I found my friend after the game told him my luck and that I will not be helping. He said Jon will be annoyed if I don't help. I told him that was his problem and that I'm leaving.

The party was amazing with all her songgirl friends. We had a great time and ended up getting busy. I was up until 5:30am and my flight was at 8:30. I told her I have to go to catch my flight. She said why don't you stay the weekend and go back monday? So that's what I did and that weekend was one of the the most memorable of my life. She was a really amazing person and we are friends on facebook.

I contacted my friend later and asked if Falk noticed that I was not there. He said yes that man doesn't miss anything. He told me that he explained the situation later and Falk's reply was, " He left us to go hang out with a songgirl? Well I guess I can't blame him as if I was 30 years younger and unmarried I would have made the same choice!" I later sent a note to Jon thanking him for the amazing experience. I received a 5 word response. " You owe me 3 hours"

This story still brings a smile to my face!

You waited until NOW to post this??

Just because you did not have 100 points?

If it was me, I would have posted "Hi" 100 times the day after it happened, just so I could get enough points to post it.

Yeah, this happened....not!

Please post the field pass that surely has been framed and is on the wall in your man cave.

I’ve read gullible before, but I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn for sale to all those who believe this OP. I’ll cut you a deal!

Been to 2 Rose Bowls. 1992 vs Washington and this one. Travelled 8,000 miles all in. Michigan never led for as much as 1 second in either. Both wins I believe were vacated; Washington/Steve Emtman/roids and USC/Reggie Bush/payola. (Maybe 1992s wasn't vacated but should have been).  Took my 12y old son to the '04 debacle. On the way back to the hotel I ran a red light on Sunset Blvd. Not intentionally, just sad and out of it. One of the 1st red light cameras ever took my picture. I am still a wanted man in LA. Then my son went to Michigan. He was there in 2016. So....

For 4 decades I have thought Michigan football was cursed. Maybe it's not Michigan.  Maybe it was my "Eeyore attitude."

The world needs more Cygnus. Michigan needs more Cygnus.  Keep posting Cygnus. Please.  You never know what breaks a curse...

I can answer a few questions.

Pics - you can do a search for the 2003-2004 team. she's in a bunch of them. I am not telling who it is as I respect their privacy.

I never paid Jon back.

No I wasn't on peyote.

Is penthouse even around anymore?

These women seemed like normal students. I don't think they were prostitutes or whatever someone called them.

For those of you who don't believe it? Sorry. You can believe it or not.

Dude, I live in SoCal, know and hang out with a ton of SC people, including song girls (and now the parents of song girls) and there is a 0.0% chance this ever happened.

Pasty white dude, who hasn’t seen sun in months, and had to work his way on to the field, winks at a song girl during a game (when they’re totally engaged in doing song girl stuff before, during and hours after the game, especially a rose bowl), and then spends a weekend banging her and hanging out with her song girl friends...then waits to tell a message board about it 25 years later after “reaching 100 points.”

This OP is absurd. I’m sure she ignored the billionaires, TV/radio/sports personalities and generally household name famous people that populate the SC game sidelines, not to mention the kids of all these types of people that populate SC’s actual campus, who are generally all so attractive it hurts, to pick some random fill-in sideline worker from UM to invite to a song girl party and bang. And that it was so good she cleared her schedule so you could stay with her longer.

Disqualifying facts too many to detail from the OP but anyone who has spent any time in SoCal or with SC types know the ego, vapid nature and/or game day schedule of any song girl would prohibit any of this nonsense you’re spewing.

Sorry bro. Did. Not. Happen.

Yeah, I'm skeptical too.  At the very least, I thinks some exaggeration is going on here.  I was a student equipment manager under Jon Falk for four years, and I worked the 2004 Rose Bowl as part of the official travel party.  This means I worked all the practices leading up to the Rose Bowl too.

The OP claims Jon had him come work a practice because "Joe is sick."  We didn't even have a Joe working as part of our staff during the practices.  The OP also claims, "The next day I was at practice handing out equipment."  This is BS.  ONLY the equipment staff hands out equipment, not the randoms who may be attending practice.

I'm uploading a pic of my 2004 Rose Bowl sideline pass to give credence to what I say.  Maybe the OP could upload his?  I would be less skeptical then.

"The game itself was pretty good and was a treat to see eye level on the field. First half thought we could still win, 2nd half the wheels fell off."

I realize your perception of the game was colored by your dalliance with the Songgirls, but in no fucking way can that game be considered in whole or in part as "pretty good."

Our offense did nothing during the first half: our ST got a FG attempt blocked, Navarre was sacked 5 times, he threw a pick that was converted into a USC TD, and we were down 14-0 at the half. Just 90 seconds into the second half we were down 21-0.

That game sucked from start to finish.

I was at the game and while I had forgotten how many sacks there were my main recollection is that we couldn't protect Navarre.  And while I agree with you that USC outplayed us I kept thinking that if we made a few adjustments to give Navarre some time (max protect, more quick hitters) that we had a chance since the score was, for the most part, not completely out of hand.  I realize that USC had more talent, but the early 2000s was an era where Michigan usually had 2-3 NFL prospects on the O-Line so I'm still surprised we weren't able to deal with their pass rush.

Great story.  I was at that game as well.  I was determined to get to a Rose Bowl after striking out on getting tickets in 1997.  The game was dissapointing though I still what would've happened if Braylon had pulled down that pass.

Same with me in both respects! Not going to the 1998 game (to end the 1997) season was a big regret, so I prioritized going to the 2004 game. Had Braylon reeled in that bomb and scored, it very well could have set a different tone, given Navarre more time as the D had to back off, etc.

So, notwithstanding that nobody from SoCal would ever believe this drivel, and the fact that “Joe” has been independently confirmed to not have existed (by someone who was able to post his sideline pass and detail that everything the OP details about how his fill-in staff story is complete bunk), I’m still shocked that people are still “high five bro” about this post. If anyone deserves a perma-ban it’s this dude who’s posting complete fabrications.
