No words can describe how bad that was... Don't even deserve to be over there in the student section today.

in the Michigan Stadium student section after a win.
Today it was just plain awkward. Nauseating even.

AKRON
We are all Scott Tenorman

One of my first thoughts looking at the MGoBoard was, "I can't wait to see what Brian does with this for TWIS", gotta look on the bright side.

A win can't be a failure as bad as it was. D- all around.
September 14th, 2013 at 4:13 PM ^
This gets an MF. The scale goes D-, F+, F, F-, MF, MF-. Losing would have been an MF- and we didn't technically lose, so MF.
The running game is below average.
The passing game could be average or better if Gardner would quit murdering the team with interceptions. He's an above average scrambler.
The run defense is below average.
The pass rush is nonexistent.
The coverage is below average, but looks worse than it is because there is no pass rush, ever.
The special teams are below average.
This is a below average team across the board.
September 14th, 2013 at 3:25 PM ^
That cannot happen again.

This doesn't bode well for the rest of the season. Our line play was really, really poor.
This game exposed our weakness... and it's up front. Unthinkable.
Hoke has to be pretty upset and frustrated.
September 14th, 2013 at 4:07 PM ^
We always knew this. We just forgot about it in the thrill of UTL.

Funk defenders will point to Schofield and Lewan of course. Funk probably needs 1-2 more years to assess. He has a lot of raw clay to work with in the 2012-2013 classes. If this does not develop into a dominant OL in 2 years he becomes a liability. But those players are now freshmen and RS freshmen so difficult to judge him.
September 14th, 2013 at 10:18 PM ^
Lewan shut down senior first round pick Adrian Clayborn as a freshman under Rodriguez.
The interior line has been massively disappointing this year and last . If we don't see significant improvement with the interior line I think we should bring in someone else next year. If we keep Funk, though, let's be mindful that we lose one of the best tackle tandems in the country next year. Treading water would be a win.
September 14th, 2013 at 5:53 PM ^
Considering we trust Lewan and Schofield as good players and the list of walk-ons, Freshmen (RS or otherwise) that are good OLinemen is very very very short, I think it's unfair to put this on Funk. But like everyone else, the OL was the most disturbing part of this game. We thought that the interior would be better after last year, but to me, so far, it's worse. Devin and Fitz have had guys all over them almost instantly way too often this season. And I think this comes down to consistency, not ability....which is what Hoke has been saying in the pressers. We've seen dynamite plays from Kalis and to a lesser extent, Glasgow and Miller, but being consistent has not been there. Consistency is almost always the biggest issue for young guys. So at least it can get better....in leaps and bounds hopefully.
September 14th, 2013 at 3:26 PM ^
Ugh. So lets just put that one in the rear view mirror. That PI call in the end zone was a terrible call,. Home cooking all the way there.
September 14th, 2013 at 3:29 PM ^
Almost a shame they called it. We would've taken more time off the clock and might've avoided that sickening ending.
September 14th, 2013 at 10:03 PM ^
I had the same thought - wanted more clock to run. Further to that point my initial reaction on the TD was they let us score - which would have been very smart on their part. Still not convinced they didn't.
September 14th, 2013 at 3:34 PM ^
That call doesn't get made a lot because the ref isn't typically so on top of the play. Most of the time they won't see that hand on the back turning the receiver a bit, it's why DBs do it so often (especially on slants), but when it's directly in front of them you can expect it to get called.
Definitely a break though, that type of thing isn't called all the time, regardless of whether it should or shouldn't be.
September 14th, 2013 at 4:09 PM ^
You don't make that call. The hand was just resting there, he wasn't using it to grab the receiver.
It's bad enough to barely beat Akron. It's even worse when we need a bad call to do it.
September 14th, 2013 at 7:43 PM ^
I wouldn't say we needed that call. It was 1st and 10. I think we were going to score regardless.
September 14th, 2013 at 4:45 PM ^
his other arm/hand wrapped around Butt well before the ball was there. That is an easy call. Also it was only first down, so very likely they still score even without it.
September 14th, 2013 at 3:26 PM ^
Suddenly the rematch against App State seems like an even more of a terrible idea.

Akron is supposed to suck now. Lot of good that did us
September 14th, 2013 at 4:02 PM ^
Terrry Bowden is a pretty good coach. Maybe he is rehabbing Akron a lot better than people think.
September 14th, 2013 at 8:16 PM ^
the Zips have been underestimated. They have Bowden who did some impressive things at Auburn and Amato isn't a schlub either. They have 22 kids who transferred in some from Florida State and Pitt so they do have some talent.
September 14th, 2013 at 3:43 PM ^
Yeah, but Akron also sucks. They got blown out by UCF and almost lost to James Madison.
September 14th, 2013 at 3:47 PM ^
like absolutely crap today. That doesn't mean that is going to be a pattern against inferior teams. We know this team is much better than what they showed today, though the line play is becoming a concern and has to get better.
September 14th, 2013 at 4:13 PM ^
that this team isn't much worse than it showed LAST week? After watching them today, I can't help but wonder.
September 14th, 2013 at 8:37 PM ^
is ranked #15 in the FCS.
September 14th, 2013 at 3:26 PM ^
The only comforting thought right now is imagining just how much practice is going to suck this week for those players.
