My guess is he was enthusiastic, in the same way George W. was with Michael Brown (head of FEMA) after Hurricane Katrina.

The Free Press is saying search is focused on Caldwell at this point. As a Vikings fan, I wholly endorse this new strategy. Double benefit of saddling the Lions with a totally underwhelming coach while preventing the Vikings from hiring him (sadly this means we will probably hire Bevell). I also think the Free Press isnt very excited as the stock photo of him they use for the article is not very flattering (looks immensely confused / shocked)

5% in this yield environment is nowhere near hyper conservative. Look at what the two year treasury is yielding or a 12 month cd. To get 5% you either need to buy junk debt or equities, which are not hyper conservative asset classes. If you have an investment grade / low risk asset with a 1-year maturity (which is the period of time you are looking at) that yields 5% let me know

I respect Brady's loyalty but hope he consulted with Brandon first and was told he was free to make this decision but would be facing a pretty stringent review at the end of next year if he kept Borges. If we are 7-5 again Hoke and Co need to go (absent having massive injury issues), assuming there are good candidates available. When you are a CEO coach decisions like this make or break your career. Hoke is making an incredibly important decision that is contrary to the available facts (regression of the offense over the past 3 years) and there needs to be consequences if his blind loyalty to his assistants harms the program

I think you are being overly simplistic in attributing motivations to people (i.e. it's purely wins and losses). If this was a losing team that was showing signs of progress or even some amount of adaptation / improvement people would be more willing to endure these painful losses. The problem isnt the losses, it's the way we are losing, with a team offensively that seems to get worse every week. The fact that this regression is a actually a multi-year one and you can see why people are despondent. Add in skyrocketing prices and a horrible home schedule next year and people have just cause to decide their dollars are better spent elsewhere.
I am fully behind supporting the players and the competent coaches but to blindly say people must buy tickets and support the team no matter what is foolish. Every individual has a breaking point at which the time and money invested in michigan football is not worth the product / experience they are paying for. For instance, I am guessing that if Brandon fired Hoke and hired Ron English to be HC with DeBord as OC you wouldnt be so sanguine about showing up to every game regardless of what the product on the field was like. When an individual determines they get to be the arbiter of what appropriate levels of fandom are and calls out those who fall short of their benchmark I tend to roll my eyes, as I am guessing do many others. You are obviously entitles to your opinion so feel free to keep calling out those who dont meet your standards

Would love to see a response to this. It always amazes me when someone feels like they have the ability to judge other peoples fandom.

I come out in a similar place but I think the end will be more like last week i.e. NW scores late and goes up by a score that requires a TD and leaves an adequate amount of time (2 min or so) for a decent offense to have a chance to drive the field and score. Since our offense is a tire fire everyone will know this won't happen, leading to further depression and anger. Problem with your scenario is that it sort of lets the offense off the hook (they get the ball back without any real chance to impact the outcome)

Golden Gophers - Kill took over same year as Hoke, in our division, and that staff inherited way less in terms of talent and recruiting than Brady and friends. If Gophers are too high of a mark let's just fold the team
|40 weeks 4 days ago||See my post below. Kill||
See my post below. Kill inherited a worse situation at MN and is actually improving his players and record every year. I am tired of hearing about youth, etc. when we have a prime example in our division of a coach overcoming this allegedly insurmountable obstacles (with even less talent and same level of youth)
|40 weeks 4 days ago||Instead of looking at Ohio||
Instead of looking at Ohio State let's look at Minnesota. Kill inherited a tire-fire program with tire-fire recruiting and attrition (not mention the fact it's Minnesota) and is 8-2 this year and manhandled two opponents that we looked absolutely clueless against (PSU and Neb). We are lucky they were distracted by Kill's health when they played us. So tell me why Hoke should get a pass when Kill inherited a lot less and has done a lot more? MN has actually progressed each game instead of regressing. As a bonus, Kill and his staff is doing it for half the cost of ours.
Bottom line - youth and transition isnt an excuse when a team in your own conference and own division working with a lot less has showed way more progress. The coaches have to be held accountable and that means Borges and Funk are gone after this year and Hoke gets at most 2 more years (if he changes staff - if he doesnt 1 more year) to prove he can win more games an Michigan than Kill can at Minnesota (nice low bar)
|40 weeks 6 days ago||I feel bad for the players||
I feel bad for the players and understand why they are beginning to look apathetic. Their coach throws them under the bus after every loss and shows little accountability or desire to hold his staff accountable. If Hoke and Co cant get them to execute they need to go. Not executing is not a valid excuse after about the 2nd time when you have two byes to change the execution
|40 weeks 6 days ago||Recruiting and not wanting to||
Recruiting and not wanting to go through transition are only reasons not to fire him given how the previous regime was judged (other than he is a "michigan man" bullshit). Personally if he loses peppers and others I would just can him IF you have a high quality coach lined up. If we are talking about running a process give him another year. Take a $6mm a year contract with ton of money for assistants out for a stroll and see who you can get.
|40 weeks 6 days ago||How can the players execute||
How can the players execute when their OC has no overall offensive philosophy other than gadget plays and formations that are thrown in as the season progresses? The fact that the players are young only makes having some sort of overall plan even more imperative. What exactly is Al's offensive philosophy other then pray for lots of talent and upperclassmen to gloss over his haphazard playcalling
|40 weeks 6 days ago||Wait, he has a philosophy?||
Wait, he has a philosophy? Seriously, what is it?
|40 weeks 6 days ago||I am beginning to think we||
I am beginning to think we should have hired Kill instead of Hoke. His players actually get better during the year and he inherited a total tire-fire so I dont want to hear the youth excuse for Hoke. Brandon should tell Hoke that he has 1 year to show improvement if he keeps Borges and Funk or 2 years if he cans them this off-season.

Terrible end game management. UCF spikes the ball on 1st and goal with 34 seconds left and a timeout. UL calls timeout even though they may need it if ucf scores. Hoke and Borges consulting?

|44 weeks 4 days ago||Totally agree. This||
Totally agree. This proposition that you can only win with JR / SR players is way . I live in MN and it's the same excuse fans out here use for Kill. Not expecting a young team to always defeat a vastly experienced opponent but PSU did not a 2-1 advantage in upperclassmen or anything close to that
|44 weeks 4 days ago||The youth excuse is only||
The youth excuse is only valid when you are going up against more experienced teams. Taking a quick look at ESPN, PSU looks to have around 20 players listed as SR and 20 as JR, so about as experience as Michigan. Oh yeah, they only have 61 or whatever scholarship players. Weren't they also starting a true freshman at QB, most important position on the field?
|44 weeks 4 days ago||Nothing is going to change||
Nothing is going to change in a week, so while I consider myself as being extremely negative on Borges (don't think he has an offensive identity or know how to best utilize the players he has) and Funk (every year the OL gets worse) I am content to wait for the result of the Indiana game before grabbing the pitchforks. If we lose to IU at home people should have very serious questions about this program because last I checked the IU coaching staff inherited less talent, has had less time, and recruited lesser talented players since they arrived in Bloomington. Honestly, you could say the same about PSU but people can accept losing to them on the road much easier than IU at home.
Hopefully they win and the panic can be deferred for the time being
|44 weeks 5 days ago||In the history of the||
In the history of the program, have we ever had a running back average 1 yard a carry on 25+ carries? That is the most unbelievable stat from this game for me. Borges is not a good OC and people saying we need to wait 5 years so he can get exactly the personnel he needs for his "system" (whatever the fuck it is - still havent been able to figure that out) are way too lenient. No coordinator is going to consistently have exactly the mature personnel he wants. You need to adapt and play to your players strength. Honestly, watching Al call a game is like seeing a monkey throw shit against a wall except the monkey throws that shit with more of an overall plan than Al calls a game
