Harbaugh through 30

Submitted by 1464 on

It was truly good to hear people bitching about covering the spread, beating an up-and-coming B1G team by 3 scores, and complaining that they want Jim Harbaugh held accountable for our dismal offense.  I really mean that.  It means that as a fanbase, we again expect to be elite, which we couldn't say just a few years ago.  I did hear a lot of heat directed at Harbaugh in the first half of last Saturday's game...

That said, here are Harbaugh's stats through 30 games.

He is now 24-6, good for a .800 win percentage.  That is the best win percentage of a Michigan coach since Fitz Crisler retired 60 years ago.  Its a few points better than even Bo Schembechler.  He is 14-4 in conference - good for a win percentage of .778.  This is .001 off of Lloyd Carr - behind only him, Bo, and Yost in that category.  This is in a resurgent B1G Conference, with OSU likely better than nearly any generation before.

He's done it with average QB's, no star RB, a bunch of holes left from the previous administration, and what seems like 6 different OC's.

His losses have all been close.  MSU and the thing we won't talk about.  OSU and the call we won't talk about.  A crazy last minute finish against FSU without two AA players.  The Iowa field goal.   A one score game against surprisingly good Utah in his very first game.  His only bad loss in 2.5 years was OSU at home in the year they finished 12-1 and were not allowed to defend their NCAA title.

In the 100 games before he got here, Michigan was an awful 55-45, including losses to Appalacian State, Toledo, and Rutgers.

So while I applaud that the expectations are back, can we at least admit that Harbaugh could probably lose every upcoming game this year and still not be on hot seat?

Not too far away. Defense is already at a championship level. He just has to get the offense figured out and UM will be winning it all.

It might be scary if we land a true 5* star stud at RB (multiple are very interested) and finally have an offensive line like Harbaugh did at Stanford.  QB should be solid by then with Peters or McCaffrey as upperclassmen.

Good times now.  Even better times ahead.

So much positve energy around the program since he got here.  Plus, Coach Harbaugh hired the Chief Dude, great defensive backfielld Coaches, and was able to retain Coach Mattison.

There were rumblings from other fan bases that Michigan fans would push for his dismissal if -

We lost to OSU this year

We only won 10 games

We didn't win the B1G

These were just asshats outside of the fanbase that wanted to stir up shit.  One such fan base has a head coach who turns purple at the first sign of stress.  File this shit under Saban to Texas, Jon Gruden to [any team here], and Harbaugh wears on fans with his antics.

Saban will retire at Alabama

Gruden makes 7 figures to explain spider y-banana

Harbaugh is beloved by anyone you talk to at Michigan

Have to tune out the noise sometimes because the talking heads run out of shit to talk about - which is when they resort to making shit up for headlines.

Anyone calling for Harbaugh to be fired under any of those conditions is beyond stupid.  Of the four B1G teams currently ranked in the AP / Coaches Poll, Michigan is the only program that has to play the other three, two of those three opponents being on the road, with one of the youngest rosters in college football this season.

I would challenge any idiot putting Harbaugh on the hot seat this season to identify the better option at coach.  Absent of that answer, any naysayer should just shut the f*#k up.

but how many of those 24 wins are on par with any of the 6 losses? Arguably the two wins vs Florida and the two wins vs PSU? Maybe Wisconsin last year? The shutout over Northwestern? So let's say he's .500 in his 12 toughest contests...

is kind of irrelevant to the context of our success considering two of our conference games each year are taken up by rutgers and maryland.

In 2015, the combined record of the 6 Big Ten teams we beat was 36-40, the record of the 2 teams to which we lost was 24-3. We didn't play 2 out of the top 5 Big Ten teams (Wisconsin and Iowa), and went 1-2 against the others.

Outside of one season Urban Meyer averages about 2 wins per season. Oklahoma/Um or Penn state.

Saban will have 2 (maybe) as well this year before the playoffs.

Blowing out one top ten team, beating another top ten team, then going toe to toe with FSU and also a coin-flip vs a playoff team on the road. Trying to minimize our good seasons makes no sense.

I think it is important to include in the narrative that he went 10-3 with a team that was 5-7 the year before.  The 3 losses last year were by a combined 5 points - this with essentially the same squad as the year before minus Rudock.  I dunno, I'm impressed with how the future looks right now.  His young squad right now will only continue to grow and improve over this year and next.

Had an abysmal record in Bowls - at least the Rose Bowl. It didn't mean he wasn't a great coach. Also of note is that (believe it or not..) there was probably even less parity in the league back in Bo's days.

There is more to be achieved, but I believe we have the coach(es) and structure in place to achieve lofty goals. Which I am OK with even if it means bitching by the fan base when we are only good or very good as opposed to great/perfect.

Hoke 2014
20ppg offense 22 ppg defense

Harbaugh 2016
40ppg offense 14 ppg defense

That is a 4 TOUCHDOWN swing in two seasons. Take that in for a second.

Now this year maybe we get a small margin of victory and a higher win total. That means people are going to have to put their money where their mouth is after every win we grind out.

personnel he has. He just adapts. That's the record of his achievement. He went to the Super Bowl with a starting qb who is no longer in the league. He won at every level of college competition and his best quarterback at Stanford helped him win more dynamically but didn't alter the fundamental success and growth of his team. Because that's the thing with him, improving performance through disciplined attention to doing things the right way and then correcting mistakes so they aren't repeated.

I mean that his why Brady is a great quarterback and still playing. The best coaches win repeatedly because they are disciplined about what it takes to succeed.

If you ever want to encapsulate what makes Jim Harbaugh succeed, it's just his competitive nature and passion to teach and improve. Hence, this week isn't a bye week, this is improvement week.

I mean as Michigan fans, all you got to do is look at his family and what it stands for and lives life, and you know you are in great hands. It's always about team and family. And the Harbaughs demonstrate it daily.

Harbaugh's teams have never been the best, they just pushed themselves and played that way.  And that's what it takes to win most of the time, which is what his teams do.

I am sure someone pointed out by now, but one game was not close at all. His first yr vs the Bucks.

I put that more on DJ. He had no way to stop the run. Injury did play a huge role, but I think that Md job did as well. That is the only one I can think of that wasnt close since Coach got here. I am very happy Michigan hired him.

I will always regret them destroying the program though before figuring out how important FB is. I wont be alive to see Michigan hit another 40 yrs without a losing season, 30 plus yrs of bowls, and not being shut out since Iowa in 80s.

I have no doubt if Jim retires here, he will of planted a coaching tree like Schembechler did, and future generations will marvel at the steady Michigan we enjoyed.

Has anybody worth speaking to actually said Harbaugh is anywhere close to being on the hot seat? Seems like the jump off for a pointless argument.

Harbaugh is an amazing coach and the best we could possibly hope to lead this team, so the idea we would replace him is...wat?

That being said, it is perfectly valid to have complaints, as we as Michigan fans have suffered over the last 8 years, and in a fair universe, we deserve every break.

When Harbaugh came in, he was touted as an offensive genius and quarterback guru. Brian & co. have had regular posts about the "Stanfordization" of this offense.

But when you look at our record, most of the success is on the back of some of the best defenses Michigan has ever fielded. Harbaugh deserves a ton of credit for finding DJ Durkin and replacing him with Don Brown, possibly the best assistant coach of Michigan history? (Would love a WD special on that topic...)

Those defenses have been anchored by players from Brady Hoke's amazing defensive recruiting classes. It seems people only point at the terrible offensive recruiting under Hoke and ignore the other side of the ball. That being said, given the early returns on Harbaugh's recruiting classes and the play from the underclassmen, there's no reason to think this level of play on the defensive end is unsustainable.

The main source of heat is with regards to the offensive production. Yes, Hoke left nothing of substance on the OL. But Harbaugh had some major misses his first go-around that are really coming back to bite us. The experience of our OL is in the 100s nationally, but something like half of the top 10 OLs in the country last year had less experience than our current line. Point being: teams have done much more with less. This is a historically bad offensive line. And while Harbaugh has recruited some elite linemen, the relatively poor OL development in year 3 is a cause for concern moving forward.

A second source--new this year--is play calling. When Harbaugh & co. took over for Borges, it was such a breath of fresh air. The running game isn't working...wait...we're not going to keep pounding our head against the wall? Wow. What a novel idea! The gameplans just. made. sense. But this year, there are a lot of head scratchers, and it seems like the gameplans lack the same vision. It is especially puzzling after the offensive scheme totally changed after the 1st quarter of this game, and with the back-up QB. I think there are legit concerns with the offensive staff moving forward, but given the new hires and youth on the offensive side of the ball, Drevno's seat is merely warm, not scorching.

And then we get to the QB. This dead horse would be rotting in its grave had there been any corpse left to bury, so I'll keep it short. The source of the angst is that many fans' expectations were way too high (definitely mine included). I expected Harbaugh to recruit the next Andrew Luck by his first year. And a RS freshman or sophomore super-recruit is lightyears beyond the QB play we've had so far this season. However, no reasonable fan should be worried that we won't see that level of QB play in the future--and probably soon--but those of us who had unrealistic expectations are disappointed. So shoot us.

At the end of the day, like I said, Harbaugh is the best coach any of us could ever hope for, and he will lead us to glory. There are some of us who just think we suffered so much that we deserve it immediately.

Regarding play calling: this is almost certainly due to poor OL play. You might remember that I was a huge Borges defender. The reason wasn’t Borges, per se, but I find it hard to criticize the playcalling when the OL can’t consistently block a single play. Same here. These guys haven’t forgotten how to coach. As you said, their playcalling in years 1-2 was a breath of fresh air. But Borges has earned a rep as a good playcaller in his first year or so, before he started gimmicky things to cover for his poor OL play. Fire Borges, is what I’m saying.

O'Korn came in last game and suddenly it seemed the entire play calling scheme shifted back to sanity. So not really sure why the schemes were so weird with our starting qb through 3.25 games...(and this is not a thinly veiled shot at Speight. I acknowledge the OL play isn't cutting it, but it didn't cut it in th second half of yesterday's game and yet the play calling suddenly made sense, anyways.)

Point taken. I didn’t watch a snap of the 2nd half, which has something to do with my opinion. We’ll see how it develops. My point will always be: it’s hard to call a good game, or even make a good game plan, when your first concern is just getting people blocked.

and get into the playoffs. I was not expecting it from such a young team but you can never say never with Harbaugh as your coach. I would just like to see the offense improve through the year and may be upset OSU at home! But not expecting Harbaugh to have a championship caliber team until 2019.

kick back and enjoy every year we get to have Harbaugh as our Coach.

The "metrics" of success are going to happen.  I'm firmly of the belief that a NC run needs a few bounces of the football to go your way.  Last year it bounced the other way.

The defense has been completely overhauled and  is playing at light speed and I can only imagine Urban Meyer's hand wringing that his "novel" offense is about to be permanently cracked by the Stache.  I feel like the graduation of JT Barrett is going to be about like the graduation of Connor Cookie.

I see the seniors on this team and it looks to me like the cogs are there to reload.  Thinking Cole and Kugler = Ruiz and Chuck Fil-A, Plenty of QBs, Herculean young RBs, stable of TEs. We have a kicker who can hit from Main Street,

I think Brown and Mattison are going to continue to build this juggernaut.  Towit: next dude up on the DE list is a guy Brown combed off the streets of.....Rhode Island...  Enuf Said.

Its Happening.

Sorry, but I'm really tired of our fan base saying we beat OSU last year. We didn't. Wins are wins and losses are losses, regardless of circumstances. I am certain there were close games we have won over the years where the other team felt jobbed, and we aren't giving those wins back. It sucked, but it was still a loss. Now I don't look at Harbaugh as a failure in any way because he is 0-2 vs OSU, but I also don't pretend he is 1-1.

While I am really hoping the O can steadily improve this year, 2018 is THE year. Newsome will (hopefully) be back. This impressive defense only loses Hurst and McCray. All WRs return, all TEs return, offense really only loses O'Korn (yes, I listed him first), Kugler, Panda, and Poggi.

The only negative is that The Game is in Columbus.

Look out!

I wonder if at some point in the year, teams will deem winowich as the man to double and then we will see Gary let loose. Im also really curious if we are going to use more 4 down lineman against msu. We have barely shown any of that look so far, and the bye week to have more reps from set too.
