Question: What are chances of Brady ever coming back to UM to work?

Submitted by crg on

With all the Brady-love threads (and rightfully so), there has been a suggestion that he come back to UM once he retires from playing to join the staff in some respect.

I admit that I don't follow much of headlines/discussion/rumors about individual players, so can the board comment about if this is even a remote possibility?  Does he have any coaching experience at any level (i.e. Harbaugh volunteer-coaching early in his career)?  Has he even expressed any interest in coaching afterwards?  Would a move to AA be too much for him, Giselle, and his family?  Is he a good fit as a position coach or perhaps some form of booster/supporter?

This whole idea is most likely a pipe dream, but if it could work why not go for it.  Hackett swung for fences when he went for Harbaugh and look how that worked out.

Talk amongst yourselves.

scenario where he would come to UM and coach. He probably plays a few more years in the NFL and then I think he retires and enjoys the fruits of his labor with his family. Money will not be a factor for him.

Don't think he would want to put in the hours coaching and recruiting and all the head aches that go with it. I think he loves UM and would be willing to come out occassionally and give a speech to the team and do appearances on the universities behalf, but can't imagine him really wanting to coach.

What if at the very end of his career after his best friend and one of his mentors is murdered by Nick Saban, his accountant mismanages the Brady estate and all the money is gone, have to sell off all their assets and he has to come back home to where it all started, to prepare to take revenge against Nick Saban and build himself back up to his true self in the cold cold winters in Michigan.

One can never say zero but pretty close. He'll always be a good friend of the program and not doubt will drop by periodically to give a boost and pep talk.

When his playing days are done, he won't just sit around like a bum. He'll be like Caine of Kung Fu. He'll wander the earth and get into adventures and stuff.

You'll never achieve anything great: you're lazy and you can't even imagine being motivated by anything other than money.

Yeah, governor of MA. He played not even a single season here (shared time with Henson). I'm sure he'll support UM from afar, maybe even return for a game or 2 in street clothes, but in terms of taking part in competition here, he's put it long behind

Coaching is serious. We don't need a celebrity, but a great coach. Maybe he'd be as great at it as Harbaugh, but odds are against it, especially recruiting

In 1998 Brady was clearly the starter and Henson was the backup. Henson came in in bad losses (ND, down 36-13; Syracuse, down 31-7) or blow-out wins (Eastern, up 38-13; Hawaii, up 35-3)

In 1999 Brady did share the QB position with Henson. Henson became more of a change of pace QB. I don't believe he ever had more snaps than Brady in a single game.  I believe part of the sharing was Lloyd trying to keep Henson involved so as to give him additional incentive from not pursuing his baseball career.

1998

Brady      200 of 329 for 2427 yds

Henson   21 of 47 for 254 yds

1999

Brady      180 of 295 for 2217 yds

Henson   47 of 90 for 546 yds

Maybe like 10%? Great recruiter, knows Michigan, etc. I could see him working on the DL as a 65 year old last stop. I hope Michigan never gets the wise idea to hire him as a DC but I could see him dropping in as a last stop ala Mattison or Brown

The possibilities are endless for that guy. I wouldn't be suprised if he got into acting or something just for a hobby while retired.

Brady has more talent in his pinky finger than the rest of the population.

As a coach, basically zero. Come back as some kind of program ambassador, guy who's around the program occasionally and gives a once a year pep talk, maybe shows up at the BBQ or some other big recruiting event?  Pretty high is my guess.

I would reckon' ithe chances are like one in a million.

That said, I would love it if he's able to come by to give a talk at practices and give pointers to the quarterbacks. I remember reading that Alabama is using on their scout teams, it would be great if Tom Brady is willing to come help out.

but as others have suggested, i would not doubt a return in some capacity...

that might only be something along the lines of helping out during spring camp, for a few days... and other events like the BBQ...

Having some fo these guys on staffs as 'adjuncts' somehow would be just the kind of coup that Harbaugh would seek out...

how awesome would it be for him to be a part-time offensive analyst to pass along some patriots plays?

If I were in East Lansing or Columbus the question would be "is their a number less than zero?" It's a terrific dream to think of Brady taking over after Harbaugh, but not going to happen.  He'll retire, do some different things and eventually take on an Elway like role with the Patriots.  Why would he ever want to chase 16-18 year olds around recruiting?  Doesn't need the headache. However, he will continue to be an ambassador for the program and be the greatest resource ever for QB recruiting "would you like to talk to Tom?"

Apparently Gisele said she'd like him to retire today!  Let's just appreciate THE GOAT.

It's all speculation, obviously.  But I don't think he ever coaches.  He's got more than enough money and he has business interests to attend to once he's done playing.

I would wager that a return to the field is an exceedingly remote possibility if Brady Hoke were to come back to Michigan, but some off-the-field role, I would think the chances are a bit higher - maybe not superb, but definitely higher.

There's almost no correlation between playing ability and coaching ability, based on the plentiful examples of players crossing over into coaching. They use, in my opinion, an almost entirely different set of tools. Jim Harbaugh, who wasn't by any means an elite QB, is an exception that kind of proves the rule.

Harbaugh is actually one of the most successful NFL players that ended up in coaching.  99% of coaches who played football at a high level (college/pro) were not great players, had little prospects after school, and entered the grind that is coaching.  Many more coaches nowadays didn't even play at a high level.

Brady's chances 0.0%.

2020 may likely be an open seat in MA, he's expressed interest in politics, and it'd probably allow him to continue to fulfill that need for competition.
