Oregon State Athletic Director Bob DeCarolis is a Michigan guy and friends with the Harbaugh family.  Jimmy to Oregon State?

Wow...so Michigan is the only big time school left on the board with a head coaching vacancy and all their targets are still available. No excuse not get a HR hire. I was hoping Nebraska would have hired Schiano just to make sure he wouldnt end up in AA.

Whoa, is this the best that is out there?  It's possible that this is not a good buyers market for head coaches.  Florida and Nebraska just picked coaches that we would freak out about if we had to settle for.

Riley's had some good seasons and moments at Oregon State. The hire seems from left field. I think he'll do ok there, I don't know he will be a significant upgrade over Bo though.

so I almost feel bad for them here. Seems akin to the sinking feeling many of us had when Hoke was first hired "....wait, seriously?...wha?.....here come another 3-5 years of mediocrity"

the gettings good.  Oregon State is declining, this year they graduate the best QB they've ever had and one of the best in Pac12 history statistically.   They went 24-26 with him as the starter.

Washington, Washington State have hired great coaches who were succesful somewhere else, Oregon has maintained its stature if not increased it since Kelly left for the NFL.  The recruiting game just got a lot harder in the Pacific Northwest and you can bet this played a big part in Riley taking the opportunity to get out of town now.

I do not view this as postive news about the coaching market we are searching in right now.  Florida and Nebraska both have taken guys that could not have been their plan A, B, C, or D guys.  What do we end up with?  Plan E again?

This is an odd decision for Nebraska, but Riley's legitimately a good coach.  Oregon State is, along with Washington State, probably one of the two worst jobs in the old Pac-10 (not sure how to compare it to Utah/Colorado), and he won about as much as anyone could there.  In pure coaching terms, I think he's somewhat of an upgrade from Pelini.  Recall that Riley's OSU teams upset Pete Carroll-coached USC a couple of times.

It's just odd for Nebraska because he has no apparent ties to there or the Midwest and is a bit on the old side.

What if the plan is for Riley to hire Frost as his offensive coordinator but also so he can serve as coach in waiting. Frost was discounted due to lack of experience but if he were to return to Lincoln to learn the ropes under a long time coach maybe they could live without the head coach experience component.

Riley acts as the gentleman coach Nebraska expects while their savior learns on the job.

That's all I got considering how many other targets are still available.

It's an interesting thought but hard to see Frost leaving a stable OC position at oregon for what would be, at best, a lateral move.

Given that coach-in-waiting deals almost never work out and there's not much leverage there.

So basically Nebraska has decided to stop beating mediocre teams consistently and get crushed by good teams, by hiring a coach that can occasionally beat good teams but often struggles with mediocre teams.

but it's a good hire. Not crazy great but what they need in terms of maximizing talent find in the wastelands. They could have done worse but also better.
