Tom Allen Fired at Indiana
Allen fired. IU has 20 million to pay his buyout apparently. Contract was an overreaction to the fake Covid year and having a Heisman finalist/NFL draft pick at QB (presumably).
Probably mostly meaningless, but figure they might interview Hart.
November 26th, 2023 at 9:50 AM ^
Moore will be targeted by every mid tier team.
November 26th, 2023 at 9:55 AM ^
I've said this before, but at Michigan, we have several disadvantages...but money isn't one of them and money is a way to make up for some of the disadvantages.
Every Michigan coordinator or assistant coach should be the highest paid coach in the country. That should just be our MO. If the coach is no good, find a new one.
Make Moore and Minter the highest paid coordinators (I know they're close already). Hart should be the highest paid RB coach, Bellamy, WRs...and so on.
Also Moore should get a bonus this season that includes Harbaugh's per game salary. He was the HC for 4 games, pay him as such.
November 26th, 2023 at 9:59 AM ^
My guess is that some of Jim Harbaugh's interest in the NFL has been about gaining leverage to pay top dollar for assistant coaches and to get NIL going.
I think this post is spot on. If it's a matter of salary, let's go all out to keep the band together.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:48 AM ^
There’s so much denial here about Harbaugh’s situation, when what’s going on is so obvious. He hasn’t signed an extension because he doesn’t want to right now. He doesn’t want to because he wants to return to the NFL and isn’t going to agree to a big buyout that would make that impossible. Maybe, if he’s shut out after this year’s openings are filled, he’ll come to the conclusion he’s not getting back into the league and sign the deal, but he’s going to take his shot. if he does get an NFL job, I bet he’d at least take Minter and Herbert with him, and maybe others. Michigan football could look very different in 2024.
November 26th, 2023 at 11:01 AM ^
Harbaugh has not been offered the extension yet. He is under contract for several more years. I suspect he signs it as that was what was going to happen before all the signal gate nonsense.
November 26th, 2023 at 11:31 AM ^
You seriously don’t think that after the past two seasons of Big 10 titles, CFP appearances, and beating OSU, he couldn’t have received a huge extension from the university, if that’s what he wanted? Really?
November 26th, 2023 at 12:27 PM ^
Considering recent events and how conservative our university approaches complex situations…
No, I don’t think he has supreme power to blink an extension into existence. It’s not like that here.
I could be wrong, just as you could be, but nobody can confidently gauge Harbaugh’s interest in either the NFL or the NCAA at this point. To think any other way is idiotic.
Right now, we have 3 games left in the season. That’s where all the focus is going to be.
November 26th, 2023 at 1:00 PM ^
Given that we all know Harbaugh has pursued NFL opportunities after recent seasons, and add to that the BS he’s had to go through with the Big 10 and the NCAA this year, it is idiotic to think he’s no longer interested in returning to the NFL.
November 26th, 2023 at 1:44 PM ^
You…read this, right? And you know what it means?
“…nobody can confidently gauge Harbaugh’s interest in either the NFL or the NCAA at this point. To think any other way is idiotic.”
Just in case your last reply was directly to me, I’m not confidently enough inside The Head of Harbaugh to know what he’s interested in or not…other than winning a national championship.
However, you sound VERY confident in your, like, opinion, man. So good for you and Go Blue!
November 26th, 2023 at 11:08 AM ^
You’re really gonna sit there and pretend you know what Harbaugh is thinking? Get off your contrarian high horse dude.
To quote JUB “ Nobody knows anything”
November 26th, 2023 at 11:15 AM ^
You should change your username from Oracle.
November 26th, 2023 at 2:05 PM ^
Harbaugh isn’t taking Herbert with him or even Minter. If he does leave I suspect he will encourage the rest of the staff to stay on with Sherrone.
He has plenty of time to find a DC and SC coach for the NFL.
November 26th, 2023 at 9:59 AM ^
I wouldn't be surprised if Harbaugh uses his bonus to compensate Moore for coaching these games, just like he did after the 2021 season to compensate the AD employees that took cuts during Covid.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:13 AM ^
Sure, you could do that but it still doesn’t offer advancement in job title/responsibilities that most of the guys covet. I’m sure Moore wants to be a full-time head coach at a place like Michigan, Hart wants to be an OC, etc. The obvious question for Michigan is what happens with Harbaugh? Does he want to return to the college game and, if so, for how long?
November 26th, 2023 at 1:22 PM ^
I would rather see coaching salary based on merit rather than just automatically paying the highest industry salary based upon the program's revenue.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:51 AM ^
I don't want to lose Moore, and I don't think the U does, either. I think Jim is ambitious for his assistants, and wants success for Moore, but it will need to be a top- or close-to-top-tier opportunity with some built-in advantages. Not A&M, for example, where the expectations are irrational, and sometimes worse. You want to get Moore in a place where he can grow and achieve, not where a certain strand of the public will be delighted to pounce at every opportunity.
November 26th, 2023 at 9:50 AM ^
I heard they’re interviewing Day
November 26th, 2023 at 10:00 AM ^
....and Urban.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:12 AM ^
Urban in Bloomington. THAT would be fascinating.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:29 AM ^
The IU campus is loaded with assets to Urban’s liking.
November 26th, 2023 at 11:21 AM ^
There's Nebraska in Indiana?!?!
November 26th, 2023 at 9:51 AM ^
Not surprising...I think they'll be after our ACs.
Obligatory Allen for analyst request. Why can't Harbaugh be rehab for fired HCs if Saban can do it?
November 26th, 2023 at 9:55 AM ^
I wouldn't want that piece of shit anywhere near the football team.
Remember 2018!
November 26th, 2023 at 9:59 AM ^
Agreed. I was joking. But I do feel like Michigan should have more analysts.
Have someone start focusing on Oregon and Washington right now.
Hell, make it remote.
November 26th, 2023 at 9:59 AM ^
Seriously, fuck Tom Allen.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:46 AM ^
I would rather Harbaugh be the incubator for up and coming young assistants.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:52 AM ^
Besides, we have our own pipeline from the pros, where a little more common sense prevails. We have a lot of enemies out there in the college game, and the recent explosions have backlit a few of them in their foxholes.
November 26th, 2023 at 11:17 AM ^
If he was one of the coaches who was screaming at B1G commissioner, we can hire him as a janitor. That is about it.
November 26th, 2023 at 9:56 AM ^
Not surprising to me. The team needed overtime to beat Akron and lost to Staee. I doubt firing Allen is the solution though. I never remember Indiana football being better than capable and the world of NIL makes their scenario worse as all Indiana NIL money is going to be spent on basketball and their better football players will portal out in search of NIL.
November 26th, 2023 at 9:59 AM ^
Have to figure the Toledo coach is going somewhere. This could be the Big Ten’s Kansas, where six or seven wins is a marquee season.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:38 AM ^
Except Candle isn't 1% the coach Leipold is. Leipold has done an A+ job at every stop. Candle eventually lucked into a double digit win year in a down MAC, despite the advantage of being at Toledo
Indiana would be much better off going after a guy like Jerry Kill
November 26th, 2023 at 10:00 AM ^
Mistake for them. Allen is an excellent coach.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:03 AM ^
Tom Allen is a really good defensive oriented coach. I'd hire him in a hurry if I were USC. He will find his footing.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:08 AM ^
Nobody on the Michigan staff should take the Indiana job for their first head coaching gig. It would be smarter to take a MAC-level job where the conference playing field is more level and the pressure is lower.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:35 AM ^
It would be like Moeller taking the Illinois job, just a recipe for failure.
November 26th, 2023 at 1:30 PM ^
Problem there is, MAC coaches don’t make much. Coordinator pay at major P5 schools have inflated so much that it doesn’t make much sense to take a low level job. Candle makes just over $1 million at Toledo, the next highest is WMU’s coach at $850k in the MAC.
Moore and Minter make $1.2 million as Michigan’s coordinators. More than any coach in the MAC. Mike Hart makes $550k, which is still more than a good chunk of the coaches in the MAC.
You’d solely be selling these guys on the ability to run their own program in the MAC, when bigger programs will come knocking eventually anyway.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:10 AM ^
Tom Allen's tenure at Indiana will be remembered for a season barely anyone remembers because of a global pandemic. It's perfect, in a way.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:12 AM ^
Contract was an overreaction to the fake Covid year and having a Heisman finalist/NFL draft pick
But enough about Mel Tucker, what's going on at Indiana?
November 26th, 2023 at 10:12 AM ^
This seems odd. It's Indiana.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:12 AM ^
This is good for Michigan. Tom Allen has been a thorn in our side more years than not. I think IU is stupid for doing this. FFS they beat us just a few years ago. What the hell do the IU regents and AD expect from their football team?
November 26th, 2023 at 10:13 AM ^
I don't get it. They finally played better the second half of the year
November 26th, 2023 at 10:21 AM ^
I think Tom is a decent coach and will do well at a mid-major school.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:21 AM ^
Bring back Lee Corso. We could have one of Wangler’s kids throw a touchdown to one of AC’s kids and beat him again.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:23 AM ^
Would be on my short list of potential DCs to contact if I'm Lincoln Riley.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:55 AM ^
Has a reputation as a good defensive coach but IU's defense fell off a damn cliff this year
November 26th, 2023 at 10:25 AM ^
The IndyStar has a list of candidates to replace Allen. Mainly a mix of MAC/G5 HCs who might be able to get something a little better than Indiana for the next step, but Justin Frye is an IU alum. Somewhat surprisingly, Steve Alford is not on the list.
The article mentions that Sherrone Moore might have some trouble getting the job because of the ongoing 'scandal' at Michigan. You know it's bull shit and I know it's bull shit and the AD should know it's bull shit, but I can see where it would be tough for a Big Ten AD to sell Moore to his higher-ups after spending a month shrieking like a banshee that Michigan has committed mortal sins.
November 26th, 2023 at 10:29 AM ^
May end up making it easier to retain Moore at a higher salary
November 26th, 2023 at 10:55 AM ^
I'm okay if the 'ongoing scandal' keeps a couple of our great assistants around for another year, hell yes.
Would like if we preserve as much continuity as possible during the coming transition year, and overachieve as much as possible. For example, OSU has something of a transition coming, too. Let's plan to beat them next year, whether we are at the very top of the polls or not.
November 26th, 2023 at 11:00 AM ^
Now that would be a silver lining!
