Assuming every ticket is sold, will the attendence record actually be broken? Are there more physical seats available now then there were for the Big Chill?
|1 week 2 days ago||That's not really true.||
That's not really true. They're not charging $100 for crappy tickets and $6 for bottles of water because they "need to" to support any facet of the athletic department. Remember, this is a department that literally just said "shucks, what do we do with all this money? Indoor rowing facility? Let's do it!"
They're charging those prices because The Market Will Bear It. Dave Brandon knows exactly how many dollars he can wring out of selling medioce pizza, and he's busy zeroing in on exactly how many dollars he can wring out of our desperately beloved college athletics. As long as the tickets and the water bottles are being sold at a volume he finds acceptable, they're going to continue to charge the prices they do regardless of how big the athletic department's surplus is, or how much the coaches and assistants get paid.

Why not? They've already got GERG*... We're putting the band back together!

Yes... aka the Dreaded Vote of Confidence. You could fill a book with similar quotes from ADs (or Professional team owners) who were about to fire their coaches.

What does "revive" mean in the context of Eastern Michigan football? Have they ever been good? Like, good-for-a-MAC team good?

1817: University of Michigan established... in Detroit.
1824: Ann Arbor founded... but it was far from a city at that point.
1833: Ann Arbor incorporated as a village. Still not a city!
1837: University of Michigan moves to Ann Arbor onto 40 acres of land that was originally set aside in hopes of becoming the state capital.
1851: Ann Arbor chartered as a city.
So, the university predates the city, village, town, whatever. The settlement was in the area before the university was, but the university was established in the area before the area became a city. Yay semantics!

I find it funny how townies and city council members get so irritated with the state of things between the university and the rest of the city. It's not like the U of M and its tens of thousands of employees and students and billions of dollars of budget just showed up one day and started loitering around. Without the university, Ann Arbor would just be another little mid-michigan town that nobody outside of the state has ever heard of. Yeah, sometimes you have to deal with obnoxious lighted signs or whatever, but that's the price you pay for being the host of a world-class university.

Talk radio callers have the attention span of a fruit fly. The tigers were eliminated a week and a half ago, and won't play again until the spring... and it's fair to mention that Cabrera was a lot less than his normal superstar self with his injuries at the end there. Calvin Johnson and the Lions set an NFL record three days ago and will play again in a week and a half. So of course they're higher on Calvin Johnson right now.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the idea of fans in full-out criticism mode about their team that hasn't done worse than a 21-point victory yet this year. I guess... the game in question (against #12 UCLA) they were only tied at halftime?
Plenty of us around here get worked into rages and start yelling to fire Borges or bench Gardner or whatever, but that's when we're losing to average teams or barely beating horrible teams. Hard to picture us dominating the first half of the season and then losing our cool when we're tied with a top-15 team at halftime.

Interesting! Thanks for mentioning it... found it on youtube after you provided the details.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||yup, that's my point||
yup, that's my point exactly. To my knowledge no team has ever fumbled away the ball away while in victory formation. FItz scoring a touchdown gives Indiana a very small chance of winning (less than 0.1% I'd guess), but it's still more of a chance than they would have had if we got to kneel-down mode.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||Also... how much risk did||
Also... how much risk did Fitz put us in at the end of the game by scoring a touchdown (taking us from a 9 to a 16 point lead, but forcing us to give the ball back with a full minute left) rather than going down after picking up a first down, which would have allowed us to kneel the game away? Not very often a touchdown decreases your odds of victory, but that play must have done it.

Yes, it was the old hockey penalty chant that I was referring to. I haven't made it to a game in a while... did they finally get that one squashed?

Not my first time (I would have been young to remember) but I went to a couple games at the Metrodome because my family lived in Minnesota back in the 90s. I remember one game, sitting a couple rows in front of two drunk Michigan fans who spent the entire game adapting Bill Murray's anti-gopher lines from Caddyshack to apply to the game. Comedy gold!
As for the game? Well, I wasn't alive the last time the gophers won in Minnesota, so I guess we won.

|12 weeks 4 days ago||There's a big difference||
There's a big difference between wowing recruits with your impressive facilities and flat out buying the players you want. I'm not opposed to stipends and the like, but just plain deregulating payments to players seems like the death of game.
Texas boosters are already talking about backing up a dump truck full of cash to Nick Saban's house in an attempt to get him to fix their woes. What if instead they're just going to pay ten million dollars each to get Johnny Manziel, Jadeveon Clowney, and 20 more of the best players they can find to transfer? But then Texas A&M raises 15 million dollars to get Johnny to stay... Hell, maybe they setup a kickstarter!
Does that not sound like the death of college football (and basketball) to you? Or do you just find it unlikely that it would come to that?
|12 weeks 4 days ago||This is my concern as well.||
This is my concern as well. Phil Knight already dumps millions into Oregon facilities... imagine what he would do if he could pay players directly. We'd never see a 5-star recruit again unless we came up with the cash. Admittedly, Michigan would be able to keep up better than most, but still... I don't see how allowing 18-year-olds to become millionares because T. Boone Pickens wants to turn Oklahoma State into a juggernaught and has the cash to do is somehow better than what we have now.
