Game Day superstitions, let's hear 'em

Submitted by blowery on January 8th, 2024 at 12:49 PM

With the big day here, I'm sure a bunch of folks are neck deep in some ridiculous rituals to appease the football gods. What'cha got? What's worked this year? What's failed you in the past?

For me, I have a hoodie (shout-out Homefield) that I can wear before and after the game, but never during the game. Every time I put that thing on, bad things happen. Third quarter offense against Alabama? Hoodie was on. Last drive and OT, hoodie was off.

I'm sorry / you're welcome.

I am sitting on the floor with a pillow against the end of the sofa.  Been there the whole season except for the East Carolina game that I went to in person with my son.

Every day before Game Day this year, maize polo under my lightest Michigan quarter zip.

In honor of the Fullcast, a Gatorade Fast Twitch every Game Day morning. "I'm on the ceiling, brother!"

Homefield 1997 Michigan "Victors Valiant" Rose Bowl shirt under a Michigan polo.  Jersey of choice based on vibes that day from my 33 different options.

One other dumb thing.

At the Rose Bowl in the early third quarter, I realized my tailgate pass was obscuring the front side of my tour pass, so I flipped it around.  Then Bama took the lead and then they went up seven.  I flipped the pass back to its pre-game configuration, and well, there you go.

My superstition is that I wear a Michigan t-shirt, but NOT a football t-shirt. And until yesterday I couldn't recall which one I was wearing last Monday. I finally remembered it's the one recognizing the Men's Swimming & Diving National Championship in 2013.

So I'm ready now. Let's do this thing.

Not as much "game day" superstitions, but....

- Can't watch the game sitting down. I'm standing for just about all of it

- I never have nor will I buy a shirt like a Rose Bowl shirt until AFTER the game is played and won. Just can't bring myself to do that until we're the Champion of said game.

Edit: And I always wear blue underwear.

I watch games or turn games off based on superstition. If I’m watching a game and a few plays go against Michigan, I turn it off in the hopes that my negative influence will reverse the tide and vice versa.

during the rose bowl, I watched up until half time then had to go out during a family reunion in Miami for dinner with the hopes to be back in time for the second half start. Timing didn’t work out and I kept an eye on the sports ticker for the third and start of the 4th as Michigan farted the game away. I then decided I needed to change the Wolverine luck and left the dinner early and dashed back to catch the end of the game with my brother (who faked an illness to stay back and watch the second half). I got back after Alabama had taken the game to 20-13 and just before our end of game drive. Suffice it to say once I got back the tide completely turned in favor of Michigan and the rest is history. I don’t want to say I was the only reason for the turnaround, because we do have to give credit to the players and coaches but I’m happy to have played my part!

I'm going out but will wear the same thing I did last Monday, which includes the Maize block M shirt I bought in 2010 and wore to Michigan Stadium many times. At home, I drape my M Club Supports You beach towel on the love seat while I watch from the couch with a Michigan mini-helmet on my coffee table. Since I'm going out, I'm bringing the banner and mini-helmet with me. I've also been popping a quote from Aliens in the game thread, which I'll be sure to do later.

i wear a #47 jersey to every game i attend, but i don’t always wear it when watching at home.

so i was wearing a regular old michigan sweatshirt over my ‘smash’ t-shirt on monday night…until about 4:30 left in the fourth. then i put on my 47, and the rest is history. won’t make THAT mistake again

thanks, benny oosterbaan, and YOU’RE WELCOME!

I crack out my 2003 Michigan student t-shirt for big games. It’s got a great track record. I’ll be sporting it tonight! In fact, I’ll be wearing the exact same outfit that I wore for the Rose Bowl. You’re welcome!

I wont predict the score to anyone or show any level of cockiness or confidence.  Too many years of dong punches with tough lessons learned.  And absolutely no betting for me on the game.  That’s a guarantee L.

Attire will be same as last three years.  M shirt and jeans.  This game though adding a McCarthy Jersey (wore it for Bama game)

I realized a couple weeks ago that every game (tailgate or home viewing) that I have provided barbeque for, we have won that game. My smoker is undefeated.

pork shoulder got us through the Rose Bowl.

brisket is cooking now.

Fat cap up has always worked for me.

Meijer had 8-9 lb brisket flats this weekend, so that's what I'm working with.  I usually work with a whole brisket which is an overnight job but if I've done things right this one should be done in about 10 hours.

The recipe I use starts with a dry rub of all the usual spices, and then while cooking you periodically baste it with a "mop" which is water, oil, vinegar, beer, garlic, onions, and spices.  That seems to do a good job of keeping things moist.

I have two.  The first is the same UM shirt I have worn for every game this season.  Its ready to go for tonight.  The second is my mom isn't going to watch the game so we can win.  It started when I was in undergrad and my parents would watch the games.  She isn't a sports fan to begin with, so when UM wasn't doing well, she would wander out of the living room, and then they would do better. Reversion to the mean?  No, its because she wasn't in the living room is the only logical reason.  She was allowed to sit in the kitchen and watch, but this year moved to skipping watching entirely.  So she has promised to not watch any of the game.

I'll have you know i was the reason Michigan beat bama.

At the start of the game I didn't have a drink. Michigan played a great first half

I got a drink at halftime and things went bad so i dumped out my drink. Michigan immediately went down the field. You're welcome

Obsessively checking the blog during the game for commentary on when things are going well or things are going poorly.  I find comfort in the community.

If we start blowing the opponent out, I go to rival blogs to bask in the glory and schadenfreude.
