Notre Dame sends recruit 477 pieces of mail as 'Pot of Gold'
Notre Dame sent LB and former Michigan recruit Nyles Morgan 477 pieces of mail today as a part of their 'Pot of Gold' recruiting ploy.
What the accompanying note reads:
Nyles,
You have received the #PotOfGold: 477 pieces of mail.
477 represents the total number of NFL draft picks we’ve had here at ND. In each envelope there’s a custom graphic with the name and pick # of each and every draftee. Your future is bright — just like the other 477 men before you. Come continue the legacy — become college football royalty!

I think it's a neat way for storied programs to give recruits a visual of the success they've had. I can also see how it could be seen as overkill to some. What say you?

I could see that getting the attention of a teen.

out a letter to prospects showing the number $57,000,000 which represented the value of the contracts signed by its last year graduating class in the NFL. That will get more attention.

Or was that what Alabama paid them?
December 18th, 2013 at 3:21 PM ^
This would impress a seven year old, not a seventeen year old. They don't need a sheet of paper for each one to realize the size of the number. I'd be a little annoyed.

Sending 477 letters to a kid is probably too much, but it worked for Harry Potter
December 18th, 2013 at 10:37 AM ^
Yeah, but it really pissed off his guardians in Harry Potter. I assume if the parents of the recruit have a little more of a backbone than Uncle Vernon did, it may not end well for Notre Dame's chances...
December 18th, 2013 at 1:11 PM ^
Did anyone hear the rumor that the NCAA is investigating Harry Potter's time during Hogwart's? Something about improper benefits, no-show jobs, point shaving in the house cup...this could be really bad...
December 17th, 2013 at 11:53 PM ^
Just curious, how many Michigan players have been drafted?
December 17th, 2013 at 11:55 PM ^
That would be interesting to know.

i mean i had no reference before this, but i would have guessed higher.
jeez
that's such a crazy small community. just shows how few people make it in the nfl

Anything that helps the USPS stay afloat while keeping the cost of postage down! I don't want to pay UPS or FedEx $12 to mail a letter to my grandma.
December 18th, 2013 at 12:10 AM ^
It certainly doesn't cost that much through UPS or FedEx now. I recently sent a huge box through FedEx overnight for 10 bucks. I wouldn't sweat it. USPS needs to go.

As the parent I would find that annoying and too much, as well as a bit intrusive and wasteful. As the kid I would think it was pretty neat! I would open about 4 or 5 of them and give up after understanding what it was all about.
In the end, the kid will remeber Notre Dame sending him all of those letters his whole life. That is what they were going for. the WOW factor was loud and clear.
Let us hope he goes somewhere else and they wasted a lot of money on his recruitment hahah. Except for an SEC school, who will actually send him a pot of gold.
December 18th, 2013 at 12:42 AM ^
So they spent $200 just in postage to bombard him with letters today. Add in the cost of paper, envelopes, ink, and someome impersonating the coaches signiture plus stuffing all the envelopes and your talking about $400 for a single recruit in 1 day. Clearly something is wrong with the economics of cfb.

Kind of a cool idea/gesture, but it's just a lot of paper to throw away/recycle.
At first I'd be like: OMG what's all this? This is cool.
Then I'd be like: Mom. Get me a trash can; Brian Kelly is jackass.
I'd probably find a way to prank him back. Like tell him I had sex with his wife.

environmental nut, but...at best (for ND) that's 476 wasted pieces of paper; at best (for Michigan) that's 477 wasted pieces of paper.
that makes me cringe.

The Stalking Irish. They should call the kid repeatedly and hang up when someone else picks up the phone.
December 18th, 2013 at 6:08 AM ^
A little research into the phenomenon shows that this isn't the first time Notre Dame has done this actually. Matt Elam apparently was sent 262 pieces of mail (per Yahoo!) by Notre Dame, which beat the 182 pieces of mail that Kentucky supposedly sent him in on day. Notre Dame's were hand-addressed and everything, so someone has some serious carpal tunnel perhaps in South Bend.

This is the best they could come up with to replace giving players fake girlfriends? What's next, everyone gets a jar of Holtz saliva that he projects out of his ass mouth everytime he proclaims that ND is a title contender?

Reminds me of that scene in Harry Potter where all the mail is flying into the house - pretty absurd.
Someone must be able to post a clip of that for this thread.
