Chip Kelly supposedly working on a deal to become next head coach of Tampa Bay Bucs...wtf?
Per some twitter reports, Chip Kelly will be the next coach at Tampa Bay. I find this absurd. It makes me wonder if some serious sanctions are coming the Ducks way.

dogpile it?

Dana Holgorson.
I don't know about that, especially when WVU went through the trouble of naming him the head coach.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:26 PM ^
I live in Oregon and listen to the local sports talk radio shows whenever I can. There is never ever any talk of Oregon sanctions and it is not as if the talk show jocks get along with coach Kelly - they think he is kind of an ass- so I do not believe there to be any cover up on their part. All we ever hear is how wonderful life is if you are a Duck or duck fan.
Chip Kelly is obviously successful and he is single with zero life outside of football. That kind of work-aholic is exactly what you have to be anymore. If it is true that he goes to the NFL then the whole state of Oregon might be on suicide watch.....
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:13 PM ^
Or it could be Oregon sports talk jocks are stupid, like they are every where else.
The NCAA is obviously investigating Willie Lyles and company. They've already sent Oregon a Letter of Inquiry. There are many recruiting insiders that would be shocked if it didn't lead to a NOA. Combine this with the odd decision of Darren Thomas, there seems to be plenty of smoke.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:26 PM ^
One who have to wonder if Darron Thomas leaving for the NFL has anything to do with this. Your star QB and coach (supposedly) both unexpectedly leave for the NFL? Something is going down in Eugene.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:29 PM ^
Darron Thomas left because his back up was very immpresive an would challenge him for PT next year.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:04 PM ^
I don't buy that story. That's like if Denard went pro because of rumors Gardner had done well in practice (if Denard was slightly less explosive and had won about 6 more games over the past 2 years).
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:30 PM ^
Especially when you consider Thomas's poor prospects as a NFL quarterback.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:28 PM ^
Should have waited. He would have been perfect at Oregon.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:29 PM ^
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:34 PM ^
Well, now he can spend more time with LeGarrette
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:35 PM ^
If a pro team is willing to throw money at him why not leave? He's a hot name and his entire backfield is moving on. Take the $ and see what happens. He can always go back to coaching college. Better to leave too early than stay during a rebuilding phase that may or may not be successful.
I bet the coach at Arizona welcomes this news since they would also be recruiting the same type of athlete out west.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:48 PM ^
I really don't think that logic would pan out in the long run. First and foremost, I understand he's got some rebuilding to do with Oregon; however, he's got a good thing going there. The fan base has his back as does the university. Secondly, I think it's a safe bet to say he'd flounder at best in the NFL which wouldn't look too good on his resume. Finally, if he's merely leaving for the money then any attempt he'd make at coming back to college (assuming he gets fired after a few years in the NFL) would be highly scrutinized in that universities would be worried he's simply in it for the money.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:21 PM ^
1) I'm certain Kelly doesn't share your view that he'll "flounder at best" in the NFL.
2) Name the last very successful college coach who had trouble getting a high-profile college job after trying the NFL?
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:27 PM ^
1) I'm not terribly concerned with what Kelly has to say.
2) If he does get fired and head back to college football, I doubt he'll be able to recreate what he's done at Oregon.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:34 PM ^
2. Yeah cause Saban has really struggled since his return to college.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:49 PM ^
In this instance I'm talking about what would happen if Kelly performed terribly and got fired. Saban wasn't fired; he spent two medicore years with the Dolphins and went back to college football.
Two completely different situations.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:52 PM ^
He has Kenjon Barner and DeAnthony Thomas back, and Brian Bennett looks like he could become a better QB than Darron Thomas. Oregon is still pretty loaded.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:41 PM ^
Ohio is helped with Meyer becoming the best spread coach left (and the spread getting implemented in the NFL).
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:33 PM ^
If we're talking strictly about offense, then Arizona has the best Spread coach. I can't for the life of me remember his name though.
Edit: This is clearly a trolling post.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:42 PM ^
and staying just a little bit ahead of the sheriff.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:46 PM ^
I always have to think "which Kelly" for a second or so.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:47 PM ^
As a Bucs fan, I'd actually be pretty upset if this happened. But then again, the Glazers are in the business of pissing the Tampa community off, so its really nothing new. But to me, it doesn't make sense. I mean Kelly's a good coach, with 2 Rose Bowls and a BCS title appearance, but:
1) He's a spread coach. How does this translate to the NFL, where the spread is more or less nonexistent?
2) This is more just a personal issue, but when I think of the Bucs, I think defense. I think of names like John Lynch, Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, Hardy Nickerson, Ronde Barber, and the list goes on and on. These guys were the foundation of one of the NFL's top defenses year in and year out. I know Kelly's offenses are explosive, but defense is what wins Super Bowls, as evidenced by our only Super Bowl win in 2002. We had an anemic offense at best, but the #1 defense in the NFL across the board.
I hope, for the sake of my team, that Kelly turns out to be the right guy, but he'd better invest a lot of time in our defense. We didn't spend the last 2 drafts using our top picks on D-lineman for nothing.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:55 PM ^
Wow if this is true, Darren Thomas will look like a genius
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:07 PM ^
Right?
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:56 PM ^
if i were a bucaneers fan i would be pretty excited about the possibility of chip kelly being their head coach... i mean what do they have to lose? they lost their last 10 games last year they were terrible. why not take a risk?
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:08 PM ^
Normally I'd agree but Kelly uses a system the NFL does not, and for good reason. NFL LBs and DBs are strong and fast enough to tackle in open space. And personally, I'd rather not "take a risk" on a coach. I mean sure, you technically take a risk on whatever coach you hire, but to me, this guy being a success for my team (yes, I'm a Bucs fan) is a bit of a stretch in my opinion. The spread does not translate to the NFL, otherwise teams would use it. Personally I want a strongly defensive-minded coach leading my team.
The Bucs have always been about defense, and that's the way I hope it stays. Still, if they hire Kelly, I will support him until he gives me a reason to think otherwise.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:56 PM ^
In some cases, jumping from college to the NFL works...but I don't see that working in Chip's case. He may be making a big mistake here.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:00 PM ^
Before Tony Dungy got to Tampa, one could always rest assured that there was one team in the NFL that was run as badly as the Lions were. For years, Detroit and Tampa Bay were the two worst-run franchises in the NFL. Tampa Bay had apparently righted its ship, but then the Glazer family bought Manchester United. Ever since, they have spent as little money as they can, and dumped the TV profits into their true passion, soccer.
Now, the Lions are showing signs of becoming the model franchise of how to rebuild from scratch, and Tampa Bay is back at the bottom again. They are either stalling to get an assistant from one of the final four playoff teams, or they are taking the phrase "fuck up" to an unprecedented level. This "coaching search" makes Bill Martin and Dave Brandon look like Albert Einstein and Werner Von Braun.
Either way, if you were to poll people in the Tampa Bay area, the only people who would say the Glazers are doing a good job would be their relatives.
This hire, if it happens, might even make their relatives turn on them.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:21 PM ^
You're really not far off. As a Tampa native, I can tell you personally that much of the city dislikes, even despises the Glazers. They've clearly shown that ManU is their top priority, and a lot of their actions with the team over the last few years have alienated them from the fanbase, such as having loads of $ in FA and not spending it. We used to sell out every game, now we're lucky if the stadium is more than half full, or not overrun with opposing fans.
Many people in Tampa are looking forward to the day where the Glazers no longer own the team. We want owners who view the Bucs as their sole priority.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:07 PM ^
Kelly could be coach for life at Oregon; NFL coaches are hired to be fired.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:12 PM ^
Unless your last name is Harbough.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:15 PM ^
Warren Sapp and Arrelious Benn have both tweeted that he's coming there.
Edit: Benn backed off his statement, said he jumped the gun.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:18 PM ^
Has already come down from Adam Schefter and the Tampa Bay Times. And that he met with them last week. Schefter's tweet was something like "as reported in Portland, Kelly did meet with the Bucs last week" which makes it sound like he knew about this and was sitting on it.
And Oregon boards have a quote from someone in the UO athletic department that they had no clue he was meeting with NFL folks.
So it's clear he met with the Bucs, and if he pissed off the AD, then even though no deal is done yet, Kelly's probably going to do whatever he needs to do to get a deal done with the Bucs.
Duck message boards are in full HOLY SHIT mode and already assuming a godfather offer to Chris Petersen.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:22 PM ^
Chip Kelly is currently a trending topic on twitter, it must be true. lol. But in all seriousness, it could be a rumor, but the twitterverse is pretty active and saying a deal could be done within 24-48 hours. Most of these guys are credible sources. Guess we will have to wait and see.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:09 PM ^
I think he could be successful as an NFL HC as long as he doesn't try to do too much. I wish they didn't already have Josh Freeman in the fold there so they could draft RGIII. I'm drooling over that thought and I don't give a shit about Tampa.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:12 PM ^
Schefter just tweeted that Kelly interviewed last week, so this could actually have some legs to it. Bad move on Kelly's part of this does come to pass.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:13 PM ^
If he tries to run any semblance of his current system he will fail horribly. NFL defenses are too sound to get the results he did at Oregon.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:24 PM ^
I'm a Bucs fan and have been closely watching their situation. They have interviewed 8 people and none of them being Kelly.
Of course right after I post this ESPN reports that Kelly is in talks with the Bucs. I am not pleased!
