Wingding article on weekend recruiting impact
Figured I'd keep the Wingding thing going.....:) .....
Steve Wiltfong wrote a glowing article about our recruiting impact from the game experience yesterday.
September 12th, 2021 at 9:53 PM ^
The Wingding and Zap Zinger threads have been almost as good as the football ones.
September 12th, 2021 at 9:55 PM ^
MGoBlog said we can’t recruit wide receivers cuz we only passed for 44 yards so I don’t believe this
September 12th, 2021 at 10:26 PM ^
Think of the playing time a 5* WR could get immediately!
/End dumb argument
September 12th, 2021 at 10:37 PM ^
I suppose they’d get 1 star more playing time over our current 4 stars!! 50 yards passing here we come baby!
September 12th, 2021 at 11:23 PM ^
Think of all the blocking opportunities!
September 13th, 2021 at 8:34 AM ^
Not really. Every school with poor receivers has that to market. Scheme matters. Drafting matters. Development matters. Culture matters. Opportunity to show talent in virtually guaranteed playoff appearances matters.
September 13th, 2021 at 9:53 AM ^
There are only 3-4 teams with "virtually guaranteed" playoff appearances.
Scheme does matter, and there's nothing inherently about Michigan's scheme that says we have to run the ball 50 times a game. We are just good at it, and it works (so far). We also have young, highly rated QBs to get balls to receivers.
Not saying Michigan would be more attractive to a WR than say, Oklahoma, but I think we are vastly overthinking one game's effect on a recruit's attitude.
September 13th, 2021 at 8:18 AM ^
WINNER.
On Saturday night, it became clear that Mgoblog Nation is widely disputing the results of this contest based on passing yards (or lack thereof).
September 13th, 2021 at 10:57 AM ^
Nobody is saying that. They’re (we’re) saying that the passing game is a major concern. 2.9 yards per attempt is a concern. Repeatedly going to a pass play that wasn’t working is a concern.
Nobody is taking away from the win or the running game. But that doesn’t mean you have to ignore where theres flaws and room for improvement.
September 13th, 2021 at 10:59 AM ^
Go read the snowflakes. Things got downright existential.
September 13th, 2021 at 9:02 AM ^
Remember that we are not the staff. I'm most of the way through the podcast and they have not complained about how this looks to recruits. The game recap doesn't mention recruits.
September 13th, 2021 at 8:01 PM ^
Magnus said we would lose half of our roster because of our dreadful 3 TD win. Can't be true.
September 12th, 2021 at 10:03 PM ^
Nobody’s going to ding you for winging it. Good stuff.
September 12th, 2021 at 10:07 PM ^
Under the Lights atmosphere was electric.
September 12th, 2021 at 11:33 PM ^
So then why do we have so many noon / 3:30 starts?
September 12th, 2021 at 11:39 PM ^
Because...TV picks the times. You think OSU wanted to play Oregon during the day?
Because...not every game is a P5 non-conference matchup.
Because...part of what makes it special is the fact that it doesn't happen all the time.
But you knew all of these things already...
September 13th, 2021 at 6:53 AM ^
You think OSU wanted to play Oregon during the day?
Probably. Noon here is 9AM Pacific.
September 13th, 2021 at 7:39 AM ^
I'm guessing they would've preferred the raucous environment that comes with a night game.
September 13th, 2021 at 8:53 AM ^
Kind of a shame they didn’t have a big, night time audience to watch them lose that game. Plenty of time for them to recover, but a playoff without Clemson and without OSU would be a breath of fresh air. Cannot even imagine how nice it would be if there were no Alabama.
September 13th, 2021 at 7:37 AM ^
Are you ever not complaining about something?
September 12th, 2021 at 10:13 PM ^
Great article and great wingding reference.
I know there's little for hope on this but it does sound like Walter Nolen still has interest. He's changed his top 3 already. Is it unreasonable that he adds them after the beautiful atmosphere last night?
More importantly, Deone Walker was there and he's arguably the most important target given his potential, position, and likelihood of actually coming to Michigan.
September 12th, 2021 at 10:24 PM ^
If Sam Webb is to be believed (I like his content I think he's a good source but overly optimistic) then there is a 'Dumb and Dumber' chance we get Nolen.
His top 3 is changing all the time, so whether we're in the top 3 or not, we have a "chance" with him. That chance probably is one in a million though, so don't hold your breath.
September 12th, 2021 at 11:41 PM ^
A chance today.
But he's not signing today so it doesn't matter.
Put it this way...our only chance to get Nolen is to go undefeated or 11-1, beat OSU and win the B1G Championship Game.
If that happens...we're in the mix. Until then, he's just having fun because he follows the money.
September 13th, 2021 at 5:10 AM ^
All he can report, is what he is being told. This is Nolan's second visit, and if that doesn't show interest, I'm not sure what does. I'm not saying he's coming, but if he comes back again for the OSU game, that is significant.
September 13th, 2021 at 8:47 AM ^
Per the article this was his THIRD visit.
“This was their third time on the Michigan campus this year after checking the campus out in the spring and again in the summer for an official visit.”
He used one of his five OVs and then paid his own way twice. (Unless NIL now allows for unofficial visits to be paid for)
Still almost no chance to get him but there has to be some level of interest.
The reality of the situation is he will commit to Tennessee in a big live televised event and then very close to signing day he will decommit and on signing day he will sign with Alabama or Georgia.
September 13th, 2021 at 8:57 AM ^
I expect this exact scenario. He'll verbal to Tennessee at some point but sign with Bama or UGA on signing day. Maybe A&M but almost certainly Bama or UGA.
Yet, there has to be interest there and in this case it's already been stated to be another case of a mother loving UM, a father really liking them but probably preferring a couple other schools and the kid himself cycling between them based on the whims of a teenager.
I'd still bet the farm on Bama or UGA.
September 13th, 2021 at 9:00 AM ^
Per this article, it was actually his third visit.
Edit - This is what happens when you don't refresh the page for a while before replying :)
September 13th, 2021 at 7:55 AM ^
Well, one thing is for sure. If you are a defensive front seven player, playing in this defense is heaven on earth. This was the perfect game to have Walter Nolen experience. He won't get to play alongside Hutchinson but McGregor is going to be the same kind of player. And this was the ideal game for recruiting OLs. Championship teams are built in the trenches-and here, in this game, Michigan dominated the trenches.
This team, this program is hanging in the balance. If they can grind out a 2 loss or less season a very solid recruiting class will follow-maybe even a great class will result. Recruiting momentum is similar to game momentum and should this team have a great season it is within the realm of possibility that Jackson, Nolen and Conerly all fall into our lap and bring a wave of very good 4 stars with them-it's a crazy world. Conversely, well, no reason to think those thoughts right now.
September 13th, 2021 at 8:54 AM ^
I think we'd be Nolen's parents' top choice. Nolen himself is probably looking more at NIL, fellow D-Line classmates, and D-Line coach reputation, areas where we comparatively fall short.
September 12th, 2021 at 10:34 PM ^
I wouldn’t worry about the wingding typo. I mean, did you read the article in the link? There were like 3 very bad typos. If they can get away with it, so should you.
September 12th, 2021 at 11:49 PM ^
He's referencing a title from another recruiting post he made last week where Witfong was autocorrected to wingdings
September 12th, 2021 at 10:36 PM ^
Positive developments. We have a shot with any of these guys that don't still have trips scheduled to Bama or Clemson.
Can we get them some $$$$ please.
September 12th, 2021 at 10:44 PM ^
We need to make an early to mid September home game under the lights, every year, if nothing for recruiting. And for that matter, another one in early October.
September 12th, 2021 at 11:48 PM ^
I've always said our non conference should be...
Notre Dame, week 0, kickoff college football with the FIRST game of the year. Every year.
Bye week 1. Make adjustments.
Night game vs. below average/average/above average big name P5 "state" school (Washington, Cal, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, Arizona, Kentucky, Tennessee, Kansas, Colorado, etc.) in week 2.
Tune-up vs. Directional Michigan or Toledo in Week 3.
September 13th, 2021 at 5:53 AM ^
That’s a stupidly difficult schedule in an era where strength of schedule doesn’t matter and we already play one of the toughest schedules in the country… doesn’t make any sense.
It may be more entertaining to have big name schools come in, but if our goal is actually to make the playoff then it really doesnt benefit the program to do so. Instead of playing a cupcake, Clemson and OSU now have to win out to have any shot at the playoff. And there’s a significant chance that at least one of them will be left out if they both win out.
September 14th, 2021 at 6:42 PM ^
Playing Notre Dame and Arizona and Eastern Michigan is stupidly difficult?
Wow, that's a stupidly soft take.
September 14th, 2021 at 6:43 PM ^
Also, the playoff is expanding.
September 13th, 2021 at 9:56 AM ^
Here to give you the obligatory TO HELL WITH NOTRE DAME.
On a more nuanced level, I prefer to open with a cupcake. And to not give Notre Dame the opportunity to erase the memory of their last performance in Michigan Stadium.
September 12th, 2021 at 10:46 PM ^
I’d imagine CJ Carr has been in that stadium a few times…
September 12th, 2021 at 10:48 PM ^
Lots of nice quotes from polite kids. Glad they had a good time.
I don't understand where the winding thing came from. Thought it was a typo before. Did I miss something?
September 12th, 2021 at 11:00 PM ^
I should have left a note for those who missed it... Last week I created a topic, posting an article about Steve Wiltfong crystal ball to us on DE Joshua Josephs.... but my Android phone, took the liberty to auto-correct my typing "Wiltfong" to "Wingding". Errant title read "Wingding CB Josephs to M".... I had put it in title and then only caught after it posted, when it becomes too late to correct. The thread was an instant hit, due to the comedic value to such an odd error.
And any attempt since to re-create my phone changing it to wingding, has failed, making me believe it learns as it goes. At first I was mortified I couldn't change the title, but many here got a real kick out of it, so I will keep it alive...

Yeah. Major dork here and can confirm that for all of Android's really terrific features, it's adaptive keyboard/predictive keyboard software is bad and demonic lmao.
If you make a single mistake writing anything in the first few weeks of having your device, good luck. It will then start to get basic 3 and 4 letter words wrong. "The" will become "rhe" and it will do so automatically! Even when you type "The" the software will think "oh, you meant "rhe" so I'll fix that for you".
Every time. Within a month it takes longer to fix your device's errors than your own if you just left the option off.
The most evil part is that a lot of it is stored offsite so even clearing a cache and such doesn't fully fix the problem. A lot of the work is done via server so typing anything while connected online in any way can being this behavior back. It's a "feature" of Android, which I'd still choose over iOS any day but that's not a debate I feel like having now haha.
September 13th, 2021 at 2:50 AM ^
I too too have been the victim of some strange Android autocorrect
Somehow my "Good morning Sugar Plum; text to my ex-wife was autocorrected to:
"You festering weasel faced bile bag. I hope you get dragged across the Sahara by a herd of Bedouin camels and die a slow and agonizing death inhaling sand and dromedary shit while being sauteed by the blistering desert sun!"
Weird right?

You can change that. rhe can be manually deleted from the dictionary.
I started a new job in Feb and it's a Mac shop -- my MacBook pro does the same thing. Yes, very frustrating.
September 13th, 2021 at 6:54 PM ^
Yeah, as mentioned above, some of it can be helped on your end but a lot of the work is done server-side. You can delete "rhe" but the pattern isn't stored on your device, that's on the side doing the AI processing. That can't be deleted or fixed without creating a new google account.
September 13th, 2021 at 7:21 AM ^
If you typed "Wingding" on your phone, would it auto correct to "Wiltfong"?
September 13th, 2021 at 5:12 AM ^
I think your auto correct answered it for you.
September 12th, 2021 at 11:00 PM ^
Thank you. That was a fun read.
September 12th, 2021 at 11:54 PM ^
Obviously, landing Walter Nolen in 2022 would be awesome.
I'd really like to see Michigan seal the deal with Jaiden Ausberry and Tackett Curtis in 2023, could help develop a pipeline to some of the talent in Louisiana.
