Rival Defenders and White Knights, explain yourselves

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on

I've noticed a curious phenomenon on this blog and the currently active Sparty disrespekt thread reminded me of it.  Since there is exactly nothing else going on in the Michigan football universe at the moment, I have a question.

Why do you feel the need to defend OSU, and especially MSU, in every single thread about either team?  I'm pretty sure that there's no one on their boards saying "Michigan is going to kick our asses this and every year now that they have Harbaugh as coach", or anything similar.

And yet, every single time OSU or MSU is mentioned here, several people show up in a thread with...

"MSU will be great as long as Dantonio is coach", "We can't say anything until we beat OSU", etc, etc.

WHY?!?!?!?!

The closer you live to a particular teams home fan base, the more intolerable you will find them to be.  You all hate OSU and MSU fans with a passion and I assume most of you live in relative proximity to the two fan bases.

I on the other hand would tell you that I would gladly have lunch with MSU and OSU fans before I would tolerate Badger fans.  Talk about a team that hasn't won anything to speak of in Football or Basketball in my lifetime, but they finish ahead of Michigan or beat them and I have to hear about it for months.

I personally also find the Michigan fan base quite intolerable when I attend home games.  I always end up sitting next to a handful of idiots who don't know anything about football, barely know the players, but still complain about the outcome of every play that isn't 10+ yards.

I have attended Michigan @ OSU and I found their fans to be quite nice actually.  Meanwhile I have attended Michigan @ Wisconsin and I find Badger fans to be some of the most awful people in America.

Bias is multiplied by proximity.  This is also why I hate The Packers more than life itself.

is 111,000 people in the stadium for every home game, you are bound to get a few no-nothings in every section of the crowd.  I would also guess that most of your experiences came Post-Lloyd Carr era, when the team reached such depths that people were giving tickets away to people who did not usually attend games.  That era is now officially over.

Geography definitely plays a part.  I've met a ton of really respectful OSU fans, just not in the state of Michigan or Ohio.

Been to B1G tourny in Indy, and the hockey final 4 a few years ago in STL and the ones I ran into were very polite, given their teams were knocked out and they were just there to enjoy sports, a true fan of the game.

Not affliction wearing high school dropouts who think coleman's and igloo's are offbrand johnny on the spots.

That a coach and program is successful is not defending or supporting them. There's no denying that Meyer will go down as one of the best college coaches. Does that mean I like him or want him to win? Of course not, I despise him and would love to see us turn him into Cooper 2.0. Criticizing Meyer or Dantonio for their handling of off field issues is also valid. But let's not pretend like those guys aren't formidable opponents

Talking shit about a rival when you're 1-7 in the last 8 years against one, and 1-11 in the past 12 against the other just seems silly. Obviously I hate them both, but it's less satisfying when the results aren't in your favor.

Is that disrespecting Rutgers fans?

Are you trying to take their rivalry away?

Why not talk about our biggest historical rival Rutgers?

MSU wins a lot of games under Dantonio and we were down for 7 (!)  years. It's that simple. MSU is a good team that outperforms recruiting rankings because they have good coaches and we were a bad team for a while. Their fans make it insufferable, especially to the Michigan fans from the state and know so many MSU fans. We'll win the majority against them under Harbaugh as long as we keep up the stellar recruiting and Harbaugh keeps making great coaching hires. Not that bad, right?

OSU is another beast entirely. They lost Tressel and picked up the best coach behind Saban. In adddition, they're recruiting out of this world. One hope is that Meyer can make pretty bad coaching hires and his coaching style leads to a player first, NFL primadonna "I need my stats" culture. His crappy culture lead to Florida falling apart. Amazing QB play can trump a talent advantage (Matt Ryan at BC beat teams they had no chance against otherwise) too. By the way, this is all gone over in detail in HTTV.

Also, just look at the damn depth chart/s before calling us "rival defenders" or, even worse, "trolls."

"One hope is that Meyer can make pretty bad coaching hires and his coaching style leads to a player first, NFL primadonna "I need my stats" culture."

We do NOT need Meyer to make hiring mistakes. Nor do we need him to recruit poorly or create a toxic culture. While Meyer making mistakes would certainly make beating Ohio easier, MIchigan's long term path to success has nothing to do with Meyer, or Dantonio for that matter.

Michigan has always held its success in its hands. In times past the program has lost its way, when administration failed to fully understand the importance of stabilty and excellence in sports and that consistent dominance can be as fragile as one bad hire.

Harbaugh's performance in all aspects of his role as head coach has demonstrated that he has all the skils and the drive to lead Michigan back to dominance. We need Harbaugh and the program to continue to achieve consistent and greater success, and for him and his staff to continue to gather the recruits they believe they need to succeed. If that happens, soon, perhaps not this season or 2017, but soon Michigan will again beat Ohio at least as often as Ohio beats Michigan.

I love beating Ohio. Nothing, absolutely nothing, in sports, including winning a national championship, gives me as much pleasure as beating Ohio. But I want to beat Ohio when they are at their absolute zenith. I want them to have no excuses. I want to crush their dreams and dance on them and bring their season to an ignominious end.

Screw Meyer. Go Blue.

But I stand by my comment. Michigan is a program that, when it has its shit together, can hire top coaching and recruit well enough to compete with any program in college football. It has done so for over a hundred years and will conintue to do so going forward.

I'm not interested in arguing the merits of the "leather helmet days" because I don't need to. Any program that has been around as long and historically as visibly competitive as Michigan, must by definition suffer through down periods. I was a fan during the previous one which ended with Bo's hire. I can tell you that the period from 2008-2014 ended with Harbaugh's hiring for the same reason. Coaching is KEY.

Whether or not Meyer is at Ohio State, they will, over the long haul, always be a worthy challenge. They have before and will again, fall off and not be a challenge for a few or several years, but large universities with deep resources will eventually always rally by investing the required resources.

I don't want to open the can of worms about whether or not RichRod was a mistake. The major consequence of hiring RichRod was that it dramatically disrupted the stability of the program. One cost of firing him was that the program had to shift away from a running spread which made the disruption longer.

Despite the many mistakes that Brandon made, and I have no doubt that his involvement with the coaching made it more difficult for the program to recover, one thing he did do was make it quite clear that Michigan would expend WHATEVER resources would be required to rebuild a dominant football program.

So now we have Harbaugh. An amazing and dynamic coach who, despite the folks who want to separate his pro coaching record from his college coaching record, has demonstrated the ability to turn programs in trouble into top performers at every level of football. Who in his first year at Michigan assembled a staff that was the equal of any in college football and arguably the best. Period.

This is why I say that Meyer is largely irrelevant. I'd say the same thing about Saban, Dantonio, or any other coach and staff in college football. Michigan has the resources to excel in any venue, and has for over more than 130 years demonstrated that it can do so in football. The giant is awakened. The instrument of its coming success was forged over more than four decades by one of its greatest coaches. All is in place for its return, but lets be honest, if there was no Harbaugh, Michigan would find that coach, just as it found Bo and just as it found his predecessors.

When the greatest public university in the world finally decides to commit to accomplishing something, its path may be unclear the end is never in doubt. At this point it's only a matter of time.

Look at their regular season records, bowl records and how quick they win when starting with a new team. Dantonio has a better winning % than Saban did at Msu. Meyer could be (arguably) the best coach at every school he was at. Time will tell with Osu,he has a lot of work to catch Woody

This blog hits every spot on the bell curve, but there a lot of level headed posters. In addition to level headed posters, I think a lot of people here follow college football outside of M.

IMO what you are calling "defending" programs, I call intelligent conversation. I live in ohio but I hate Sparty way more than OSU, but they've won a lot of games of late. Urban is dirty, but if he had played QB at M and came back to lead us to glory we would be kissing his feet.

is up 49-3 against MSU in East Landfill this year . . . and with 1:28 seconds left, Harbaugh calls a long bomb for a TD to make it 56-3, then goes for an onside kick, gets it, then throws another long bomb . . . 63-3 final after we don't convert the next onside kick.

Cuz fuck Sparty, fuck OSU, fuck ND and fuck the Nittany Pedophiles.

while at my favorite disc course with my wife and kid/s with me. To the point of one of the guys buddies says to him "Awe c'mon lay off the guy.". Then my wife would say I am so glad you didn't hear that. Then I ask how did you know I didn't hear him? She responds, because you two would have had to be seperated. Then I say you can tell me later at home, she then asks me who is Jerry Sandusky? Why do you ask? Because I wanted you to remember his name. I looked for him as soon as I heard Sanduskys name she made sure they were in their car and long gone. I tell her at home what Jerry Sandusky is and she said OMG I am not telling you anything more. I asked did he say something about recruiting or sleepovers? She knew to say she would rather not talk about it anymore.

So I think whatever is said about them as fans go is ok by me. They know 40 years is a very very long time and it won't be soon enough for me when the next  40 years begin.

If you grew up playing sports and played into at least high school, you pretty much learn not to talk too much crap against anyone that regularly beats you.

As much as I hate them both, I'm not going to jump too hard until we win against either of them more than once a decade.

Neg all you want.  I'm beyond excited about this program and I expect that trend to end almost immediately. But, that's where that comes from.

Am I the only person who sees a big difference between saying something complementary about Mork Dantooine and saying that we shouldn't talk too much shit until we've actually beaten MSU and OSU a time or ten?

Exactly. I talk shit to my osu and msu friends. I hope all the worst things in the world happen to them and their programs (within reason), but I also can appreciate a good coach/good athlete from their program. Both of our rivals are good, and are coached by good coaches. I acknowledge and respect that. The fact that they are good will only make our future victories that much more enjoyable.

Because they've both been significantly better than us for quite a while now. Being a Michigan fan doesn't mean you need to be totally delusional.

Taunting and acting superior to the people who have been owning you is pathetic.

I thought this thread was going to be about the rivals recruiting site.

And probably because we talked crap when we hired RR and then again with Hoke. That wasn't really a good look in hindsight considering how things played out.

Then of course harbaugh starting 0-2 against said rivals, both at home, one a colonoscopy.

If this dark period in Michigan football has taught me anything, it is to talk as much crap as possible when our turn comes back around. But I've also been humbled enough to plug that volcano of trash talk until it's based on the actual games and not hope

of just being realistic. They both have been top programs for the last decade and beating us regularly. Until we turn that around and start handing it back to them, I feel we need to just shut our yaps..

Talk is cheap, prove everything on the field. Right now they are walking the walk and we are just talking. I hope it all changes this year.

Long ago, I realized that most fanbases are the same, at least up here in B1G country.  The proportions are generally constant: good fans to bad, dumb to smart, hillbilly to erudite, etc.  The schools recruit the same kids, and for every LB in Columbus taking Golf Appreciation, there is a football player in Ann Arbor majoring in General Studies (or, Kinesiology, a few years back).  For every drunken, face-painted Ohioan with a gigantic necklace of buckeyes, there's a maize and blue doofus getting maced in Happy Valley.

As a Buckeye, I dislike the Wolverine football team more than any other, and know it is mutual.  That said, many of you fans are something else, and don't realize that you're no different from Sparty fans, Buckeye fans, Hoosier basketball fans, etc.  We're no longer impressed that you were the best pre-WWII football squad around, beating everyone (including Detroit-area high school teams) soundly.  It boggles the mind how your fans will talk about your Michigan Men and the Michigan Way (which I assume describes the correct way to break someone's jaw with a sucker punch, punch out car windows while drunk, and [the kicker/Lewan alleged things]).

Why do I visit occasionally?  This website (Geocities-esque as it is) isn't bad, and there are some good X's and O's here, plus the opportunities to read up on the competition.  It is a microcosm of the UM world though- Ace is a good writer and an enjoyable read.  Some of you posters are really insightful and plugged into the program.  Your founder/owner writes like a pompous windbag and an insta-skip when I see one of his articles.

So, all that said, I come here for the same reasons you go to 11 Warriors (or whatever Sparty has): to reassure myself that my fanbase isn't the only one primed for the loony bin.

I think that the M fanbase has a tendency to be self-loathing at times, and as a way to create a 'distance' between the team, the passion and the possibly negative game results.  I think it's more typical of our fanbase to throw out pre-emptive excuses and disclaimers than with others.  I think there is a tendency to heap unnecessary and unrequited 'praise' on our rivals ....

Saying things like "I don't know why you Michigan fans go on and on about your history" when the fucking Buckeye fanbase renames streets at the drop of a hat and crows incessantly about "tradition" is a perfect example!  While we're apologizing for having the most wins in college football history, the best helmet, the best stadium and the best fightsong ...our Rivals are spinning the numbers and obsessing about our program more than we are.

And we apologize for it??

Fuck it - screw sparty and ohio state and while we're at it, Fuck Noter Dame too!
