Taint Santas would be a pretty good band name.

In '84/'85, I hosted a BYOCB (the C was for cheap) party in my room in South Quad. One of the bottles that someone brought was Tiger Fever wine, after the '84 World Series.  I held onto that empty for a long time,  but sadly it was lost to the sands of time.

I'm sure your chili is awesome, but my fashion choices usually tip the balance. It's a lot of pressure, but I am compelled to accept it.

Dave Bergman won an extra…

Dave Bergman won an extra inning game on 6/4/84 with a 13 pitch at bat (with two outs) that ended with a three run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th.  He started out 0-2.

This video has every pitch:

Watched that season from an apartment on N. Thayer, on a 10" black and white TV. Probably listened to more of the games on the radio, though.

I wonder if Bubba Helms is going to weigh in on this thread?

Yeah, I've been wondering…

Yeah, I've been wondering what kind of phones the vast network have. With my phone (samsung a42), videos of things 50+ yards away are very hard to see and zooming in just makes it worse.  I couldn't tell you what was going on across the field in any videos I take.

Be careful, folks.  This…

Be careful, folks.  This thread could become a chlamydia super-spreader event. Enter at your own risk.

If you're giving them a new…

If you're giving them a new identity, I assume eligibility is going to reset.  Fakey McFakerson still has four full years to play, right?

A wildly misleading headline…

A wildly misleading headline based on the article, imo.

This is the quote from the research: “At aggregation sites, water users were found in proximity to sharks 97% of the days surveyed".  I read this to mean that on 97% of the days, a user was found in proximity to a shark. The headline suggests that 97% of the people were in proximity to a shark. Oops.

Ha! I worked at the VC…

Ha! I worked at the VC around '84-86 and I can come up with a lot more adjectives to describe the staff.

As far as the "rude" part is concerned, I defy you to spend a shift on the bottle counter accepting returns from the frats and retain any positive opinions about humankind in general. Bottles half full of chaw and spit, dead mice, you name it.

That's what I was getting at…

That's what I was getting at. I think it should be "LB corps", but I see "LB core" much more frequently.

Not trolling, just a question for the MGoGrammarians: is it core or corps? I've always assumed it was "corps", but I feel like I see "core" way more frequently.

And I agree, really looking forward to seeing next year's D.

I really like Working It Out…

I really like Working It Out, which is Mike Birbiglia's podcast, and Good One from Vulture, where they usually take a joke and trace the evolution of that joke over a period of time.

I have not watched that, but…

I have not watched that, but I will check it out. The process fascinates me, even though I wouldn't seriously attempt it in a million years.

From my limited…

From my limited understanding of the process, becoming a stand-up (for most people) requires years of open mics and lousy gigs to find your voice and learn how to do it effectively. This is fine if you're not a public figure.

Tom Brady bombing spectacularly would become a meme in about 15 minutes. What a nightmare.

Also watch out for…

Also watch out for unexplained weight loss, night sweats and lumps appearing in unusual places. I had cancer in my tonsil almost five years ago and there were no obvious symptoms until it metastasized to the lymph nodes on the side of my neck.

In retrospect I had been snoring way more than I had previously and was having increasing swallowing issues. These were not new symptoms, though.

Treatment was brutal, but I'm almost five years out and I can live with the side effects. Much better than the alternative.

I definitely second the advice: get it checked out.

I've been wondering how long it would be until someone transfers a second time and challenges this rule.

10/3/1980 - Springsteen's first show on The River tour. He forgot the words to Thunder Road at the beginning of the concert. We helped him out. Bob Seger came out for an encore and they sang Thunder Road again. That was awesome.

I was a senior in high school at that point.  When I was a student I didn't go to many shows at Crisler. I remember The Police around '82 or so.

Yeah, seems like the running…

Yeah, seems like the running game should've benefitted from this approach.

Yeah, this is a tired take. …

Yeah, this is a tired take.  I did a BGS and graduated in '86.  I had to do 60 credits of 300-level and above classes (plus all of the other LSA requirements), which is non-trivial.  I checked this and it is still the case.  In most departments, you can't take 300+ level classes without some prerequisites, so you have to focus on a few things or you spend a lot of time taking lower level classes which don't count toward the degree.  I did mostly computer science and english classes, but there were some other things mixed in.  Honestly, I spent a fair amount of time scouring the catalogs for "easy" classes and found a few, but there weren't many.

It was not the easy way out, it was the most efficient way for me to graduate after changing majors a couple of times.  I got an education that has served me well for many years.

It's funny, because I sent a very similar message to Josh Levin who had been making snide comments about Michigan BGS degrees on Hang Up and Listen for years.  He hasn't said anything since then, I think I may have convinced him to stop.

I hit five stars in two categories today, but unfortunately I'm still 11 turns away on "Total turns".  Next season, five stars!

That's what I did, UConn ho!  I'll try again tomorrow.

I'm having this same issue.  I'm using the current version of Chrome on 64-bit Windows 10.  Nothing happens when I click on "Get An Assignment".  If I don't hear back, I'll just attack an OSU territory...  I'm going to see if I can jump on Discord and find out anything.

I was going to say that I…

I was going to say that I got it from a toilet seat, but that sounds much, much worse.

Thanks for the good wishes. …

Thanks for the good wishes.  I was fortunate to avoid surgery, knowing the risks associated with it.

I asked my ENT doctor if they didn't at least want to take out the tonsils and she told me not to worry about that, there wouldn't be any tonsils left when they were done with the radiation.  She was right.

Good luck to you.  I'm glad you're able to tolerate spicy food, it still burns too much for me to eat things like that.

I can include my story here,…

I can include my story here, too, as it is hopeful so far.  Two years ago, I was diagnosed with stage 3 squamous cell carcinoma in my left tonsil.  It was mostly asymptomatic (the symptoms were more obvious in retrospect) until my lymph nodes swelled up on the left side of my neck.  The cancer was HPV+, which improves the prognosis significantly.

I had seven weeks of radiation to my head and neck, plus chemo.  The treatment was really brutal, but things are mostly back to normal now (setting aside the long-term side effects of the treatment).  I've had almost two years of clean check-ups.  If I get through three more years without a recurrence, they'll call it cured.  We'll see.

My heart goes out to anyone dealing with this disease.  One thing I've learned is that if you take ten people with similar diagnoses, you'll likely hear ten very different stories about how things turned out.  It's a very individual journey.

Get those strange swellings checked out.  Vaccinate your children against HPV once they are old enough.  Take care of yourselves and those around you.  Happy Holidays to all of you.  Go Blue.

That's great!

I've had 1 1…

That's great!

I've had 1 1/2 years of positive checkups after treatment for throat cancer, so I can relate.  It's a tough road, but the responses in this thread make it clear that it is unfortunately a crowded road.  Fuck cancer, indeed.

For years I have been…

For years I have been warning my children about the inherent instability of mixtures of different types of foods, for example putting two types of cereal in the same bowl with milk or two different types of ice cream mixed together for dessert.  They didn't believe me.

This was the only possible outcome of the creation of the Famous Bowl. It won't happen often, but when it does it will be catastrophic.

So many Richard Thompson…

So many Richard Thompson songs could be listed, I'm ashamed I didn't think to mention him.

Great song, I'm glad you…

Great song, I'm glad you like it.

Another sad song pro tip for the board: Don't listen to "Gold Dust" by Tori Amos when you're in the middle of cancer treatment.  I don't think I'd blubbered like that since I was five.

I love melancholy music. …

I love melancholy music.  For me, the saddest sad song is "On The Bus Mall" by The Decemberists.  I don't know if I could call it my favorite, because it's so wrenching.  Teenage runaways turning tricks and dying can be a bit much sometimes:

As 4 in the morning came on, cold and boring

We huddled close

In the bus stop enclosure enfolding

Our hands tightly holding

We had an Odyssey, I think…

We had an Odyssey, I think my dad won it as a door prize at some sort of work thing.  I can't imagine him actually buying it.

It was not that much fun.  There were plastic sheets that clung (via static) to your television screen and the games depended on the alignment being just right.  Our TV was not exactly the right size, so many of the games just didn't work.  It didn't see a lot of use in my house.

Yeah, I'm all in for some…

Yeah, I'm all in for some cautious optimism.  I could use some of that in my life.

I love this show.  I haven't…

I love this show.  I haven't lived in the Detroit area for almost 30 years and it's very nostalgic for me.  I still remember a lot of the commercials that they parody.  It's a lot of fun.

I was a long-term satellite…

I was a long-term satellite TV customer (Dish, then DirecTV) and I recently cut the cord (chord?) myself.  I'm another Hulu customer.  I did the trials and liked it the best, although all of the interfaces have some issues.  I like the added benefit of the past seasons of many shows that have never been on Netflix.

One thing I haven't seen anyone else mention is Philo.  This is a small service that can fill in some missing channels for customers of other services at about $10/month.  For me, AMC was the primary draw (Better Call Saul tonight!), but there are a number of other ones on there that don't appear on some of the other services.

Good luck, Ace, I hope you…

Good luck, Ace, I hope you have a smooth recovery.

Don't push yourself to return too quickly.  I had a serious illness over the winter and was back to work full-time at the beginning of April.  Now it's four months later and I'm realizing that I really wasn't ready for that and should've spent more time easing back into it.  Take it slow.

Where are you located?  We…

Where are you located?  We're in the western part of Arvada, so not that close to downtown but much closer to the mountains, Boulder, etc.  My wife is a native who was moving back to Colorado, so I gained admission through a loophole... ;-)

I used to live in Northern New England and was born near Detroit, so this climate is a godsend for me.

I also have had ~20 yrs…

I also have had ~20 yrs experience with both Dish Network and DirecTV (not at the same time) in two different areas of the country.  Overall, I thought it was good but I also have grown tired of paying so much for it.  We are switching to a combination of Hulu w/live TV and Philo to get all of the channels we watch.

To answer your specific question, in my experience heavy rain is a problem but that kind of rain doesn't happen all that often.  If you live in Miami or somewhere like that, it could be a bigger issue.  Same with sticky snow (dry snow falls right off the dish).  How big of a problem snow is depends on where your dish needs to be located.  Going up on the roof in the middle of a blizzard to save your Super Bowl party could have significant consequences, but it isn't very likely.

Speaking as an IT…

Speaking as an IT professional, the upgrade had to happen and now it's done.  The djinni is out of the bottle and it isn't going back in.  I think we need to let go of this stuff.

I don't recall seeing any mention of a specific place to officially log enhancement requests, but if they post something like that, we should use it and I'm sure in that forum they'd be happy to hear what people do and don't like about the new and old sites.  Otherwise, I think we're beating a dead horse.  Insert gif below.

Okay, thanks for the response.  I'm trying to understand whether your experience lines up with "Oregon Wolverine"'s experience.  Of the criminal cases you've seen where there is falsely reported sexual assault, would you say that the majority are related to domestic issues?

I have a question for you.  I

I have a question for you.  I know you saw "Oregon Wolverine"s post, because you mentioned it in another one of yours.  S/he maintains that the majority of false accusations of sexual assault occur in connection with family law-type situations (divorce, custody battles, etc).  Is this consistent with the cases where you have seen this happen?
