Rich Eisen Appreciation Thread
The NFL Network's Rich Eisen will be honored tomorrow as Michigan's honorary captain at the UCF game. I was just listening to his radio show (he's doing it from Ann Arbor today), and he's positively giddy about it, as you'd expect.
I'm a huge Eisen fan, so I wanted to throw an Appreciation Thread out there to see if anyone else hops on. He got his start at the Michigan Daily (and as a campus comedian), and quickly moved through the ranks at ESPN and then the NFL Network.
I love that we have such a passionate alum in such a high-profile media position, and that can't hurt in any way. He's smart, he's funny and he loves our team as much as we do. I'm glad he's a Michigan Man, and I'm glad we're honoring him.

he should be part of the next one
along with Jordan, Jeter, Brady (teleconference as he prepares for a Super Bowl), Charles Woodson, new baby Harbaugh, the National Championship trophy, etc.

...Phelps needs to be there as well.

I only just learned of his affiliation with Michigan. I've always appreciated his style in a profession dominated by blow hards like Rome, Cowherd, and Bayless. It's refreshing to see him be successful without having to resort to what amounts to professional trolling those guys do to keep themselves in the news.
I'm glad he gets his shot as honorary captain. When Harbaugh asked him on his show in July if he was interested, he was giddy like a schoolboy. It was pretty neat to see.

JEJ is an alumni, Madonna isn't if you define alumni by also being a graduate. I struggle to find her connection to Michigan football. At least Jeter is a sports personality frequently around the program, and has a hot wife.

I was under the impression the deifiniton for Alumni is anyone who took classes at Michigan with graduation not being a requirement for Alumni status. Graduation definitely makes you an Alum, but merely taking classes seems to confer that status as well.

the definition also singles out men: "a graduate or former student, especially male, of a particular school, college, or university." Say whaaaaaaaat? Very bizarre definition there, Google. Former female students are kinda, sorta alums but males especially are?

JEJ, who similarly has no connection with football, but whom is an entertainer, just like Madonna, is a yes? Oh, she's not a graduate. But Jeter who is also not a graduate is ok because he's a dude that has a hot wife. Got it. Madonna has kissed at least one hot woman (probably many more) so is that good enough based on your logic?

+1 on James Earl Jones.
This should have been scheduled already. Would be awesome to hear him do a few PA/announce things as well.

That's probably my favorite event during the NFL Combine. Seeing a middle-ish age dude (who went to UofM) running the 40 in cleats and a suit is just awesome.

Eisen v Harbaugh!
The 40 yard dash to end all 40 yard dashes!

Rich Eisen has the natural born gift of not appearing to be a phony.
And by all accounts, he's not a phony.
He's just a very likable personality.
Happy to see him getting this honor.

He die or something?

But he's in heaven.

Did he died?

I actually got to see Rich doing stand-up comedy at the Univeristy Club (at the Michigan Union) wy back in the early 1990s, when he was a student here. His signature bit was an impression of Howard Cosell reading Penthouse Forum letters. I remember it being pretty damn funny.

Hell of a radio show, though! Great ambassador for the school and program.

I listen to his show but the one thing I cannot stand is the on-going, year-round chatter about his stupid running of the 40 yd dash every year at the combine. Its like Dan Patrick talking about his jumper taken to the next level.

asked this in another thread, but what year did you graduate JClay, if you dont mind me asking?
September 9th, 2016 at 3:26 PM ^
Uh, 2004. Why do you ask?
September 9th, 2016 at 3:44 PM ^
He probably thinks you owe him money. He'll ask for your home address next.
September 9th, 2016 at 3:49 PM ^
My first thought was immediately, oh man, I hope I don't owe this dude beer money and he's been pissed for a decade+.
September 9th, 2016 at 3:26 PM ^
You realize he uses the 40 to raise money for the St. Jude Children's Hospital, right?
September 9th, 2016 at 3:56 PM ^
It annoys me when he talks about it on the radio a lot so <fart noise>.

and he's just about spot on re: people in Los Angeles based on my 8 years of experience. My guess is people are a little less laid back in LA than 27 years ago but the apathy towards sports has only increased.

Story re: Eisen that always struck me as amazing.
We, of course, all know about the epic David Terrell "Who's got the bomb-ass dick?" legend, perhaps the greatest dorm-related story I've ever heard. That thing had legs on campus for years.
Fast forward to the early 2000s. IIRC, there was some kind of celebrity hockey game event at Yost, and Eisen was there. He went to some campus party afterwards with some other people (I think Kid Rock was one of them?), and someone told him the story. He thought it was hilarious.
Very soon after that, Eisen was doing a Sportscenter highlight with a rare Terrell NFL touchdown, and of course, his commentary over the video was "Who's got the bomb? Who's got the bomb? You do, David. You do."
Rich Eisen: A man of the people.

My wife and I met Rich at an alumni event at the Sunset Tower Hotel a couple of years ago. He was moderating a discussion with Activision founder, Bobby Kotick, who also was a student at U-M and they shared stories...very interesting backgrounds if you're not familiar. After college, Rich drove around the country looking for any sports anchor gigs he could get...incredible drive and focus from the both of them.

Did anyone know him at Michigan? I saw him at Rick's once when I was in law school.

Doesn't that describe half the guys at U-M?

We wrote together at the Daily. Was a great guy in college. Did stand up for the Mr. Greek competition in 1990 -- very funny. Ran into him in NYC a couple years after he graduated -- he was working for the Staten Island Advance, and was just miserable -- city beat, covering fires -- barely any sports. Said he was thinking of going to go to grad school because he hated it. Ended up at Northwestern and the rest, as they say, is history. Happy he's done well in the biz, as have others from the Daily in that era.
