A review of Michigan beat-writers/experts projections for 2023 season and Harbaugh 2024 status (from Scott Bell Twitter/X)
A fun little reflection on some of the "expert" thoughts about how this season would progress.
I find it curious that more of them expected us to lose to Penn State than osu.

Whatever will happen, will happen, and what won’t, won’t.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:10 PM ^
The truth is truly true.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:58 PM ^
Except when its not...and then its false.
January 25th, 2024 at 1:00 PM ^
Except that 60% of the time, it works every time.
January 25th, 2024 at 11:30 AM ^
So… only two “experts” got it right.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:07 PM ^
Everyone on there picked us to go 11-1 or 12-0, and about half picked us to win our bowl (there was no specific question about the national title). That seems pretty good, imo.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:08 PM ^
Scott Bell and Seth.
January 25th, 2024 at 7:29 PM ^
That was exactly what I was coming to say. Bell and Seth killed it.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:09 PM ^
4 of those “experts” are writers for the Michigan Daily. And 1 of them got it mostly right!
January 25th, 2024 at 12:48 PM ^
Doug Skene's prediction in The Wolverine season preview mag was really impressive:
Michigan undefeated National Champions with UM, Alabama and Texas in the playoff (don't remember the 4th team but nobody had Washington).
January 25th, 2024 at 1:53 PM ^
If the 4th team was FSU, I'd say he gets at least partial credit
January 25th, 2024 at 11:31 AM ^
That was my prediction coming into the year, that our one loss would be to Penn State on the road. I think everyone thought that would be a “White Out” night game going into the season, and it was forced into being a “Big Noon” game due to Fox’s TV rights.
Worked out well for us, even with the Harbaugh suspension bullshit.
January 25th, 2024 at 11:59 AM ^
I'm very glad that the game at Penn State was a noon kickoff - and, not an evening White Out.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:33 PM ^
Yep. A white out night game is a different critter in Happy Valley.
If PSU is smart, they will make sure their OSU game next year is a white out night game.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:44 PM ^
2023 Michigan would have beaten psu literally anywhere and at anytime
January 25th, 2024 at 1:23 PM ^
I'm not necessarily disagreeing - but, State College IS different at night. And, with JJ getting nicked - it might have not been quite as easy to execute the game plan Michigan adjusted to.
Of course - Franklin would still have been on their sideline, which is a very nice thing.
January 25th, 2024 at 2:46 PM ^
If PSU is smart, they will make sure their OSU game next year is a white out night game.
Probably not their call. If that's the biggest game of the week, it will be at noon, on FOX.
January 25th, 2024 at 4:33 PM ^
Yes it will. We've sold our souls to TV,
January 25th, 2024 at 11:32 AM ^
The group was evenly split on Harbaugh staying/leaving after this season as well.
No one knew anything.
January 25th, 2024 at 11:33 AM ^
Yeah people were super high on Penn State for some reason... As if they'd never seen a James Franklin team before.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:36 PM ^
PSU was probably picked as a loss/most impressive win because it was the toughest road game.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:41 PM ^
I would make the argument it's still the team's "most impressive" win this year. Obviously the circumstances for that were unknowable before the season. Not only was there the suspension/TRO fiasco, but then once you were in the game, they had to change the game plan on the fly.
The only other candidates are OSU and Bama, which were home/neutral site games. Both of those were very impressive, though, so I wouldn't argue against either of those.
January 25th, 2024 at 1:21 PM ^
People were absurdly hyped up about Allar pre-season, and I could not fathom why.
January 25th, 2024 at 2:59 PM ^
Definitely over-hyped, but they still ended up as a top 15 team that Michigan beat on the road - even not accounting for all the mid-flight suspension garbage.
January 25th, 2024 at 11:33 AM ^
Dang, Seth killed it.
January 25th, 2024 at 11:35 AM ^
Yes sir.
January 25th, 2024 at 1:28 PM ^
Who got it righter than Seth?
January 25th, 2024 at 3:06 PM ^
Scott Bell.
Also 12-0 and natty.
Got it closer on the osu, msu, psu scores (although Seth did predict the shutout against sparty - still, Bell's 50-3 prediction was dang close to reality of 49-0). Also got the team MVP (JJ) correct (Seth predicted Zinter - not a bad pick).
He also predicted the most surprising loss as Harbaugh. I'm sure he wasn't thinking of in-season suspensions rather the NFL calling, but dang if that wasn't ever prescient in hindsight.
They both got sack leader wrong (it was Harrell with 7.5), although Stewart (5.5) was a little closer than McGregor (4.5).
January 25th, 2024 at 3:45 PM ^
The answer I was looking for is NOOOOOBOOODY! But you are correct.
January 25th, 2024 at 11:34 AM ^
This was a good year to be a Michigan homer.
I'll bet even Des looked good this year.
January 25th, 2024 at 11:37 AM ^
Did Des pick Michigan to lose any game this season?
January 25th, 2024 at 11:40 AM ^
I dont think Des has ever picked Michigan to lose. And I love him for that!
January 25th, 2024 at 11:49 AM ^
I believe Des got 3 of the 4 playoff teams right and picked Michigan to win the whole thing over Texas. Can’t remember if he picked Washington or Bama too but he definitely picked one of them
January 25th, 2024 at 1:22 PM ^
Which was also hilarious because his playoff team guess for the 2022 season ended up being completely insane. Then he almost nailed it the following year.
January 25th, 2024 at 11:37 AM ^
Hahaha Seth picked the NCAA as "Michigan's trap game".
Probably even more prophetic than he realized at the time.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:26 PM ^
Seth went full Nostradamus this year - it was epic
January 25th, 2024 at 12:35 PM ^
Seth is the Joel Klatt of internet analysts. The best in the business.
January 25th, 2024 at 11:37 AM ^
I like the bottom line: Is Harbaugh back in 2024? The total was 12-12. We know now what the answer is.
Remember at the Crisler celebration after the parade that the crowd was chanting 10 more years when Jim got up to speak. Jim blew by that with no comment and then quoted Shakespeare. You'd think Jim would have said something like, maybe or we'll see.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:02 PM ^
I think that St. Crispins Day takes on special meaning - and, I look forward to the next time "Henry V" will be performed while I'm in the audience.
January 25th, 2024 at 11:39 AM ^
It's pretty interesting that out of 24 people, only one got the breakout freshman (assuming everyone would agree that it was Morgan). Unfortunately for Trevor McCue, his call of Edwards as Team MVP was as wrong as his freshman of the year was right.
January 25th, 2024 at 1:35 PM ^
He was one year off, Edwards will be Team 145 MVP.
January 25th, 2024 at 11:39 AM ^
FWIW it's gonna be hilarious when somebody does this same thing but with Harbaugh's contract extension predictions instead of the games themselves. Show every "insider" and when they started predicting "any day now" on the signed extension and how many "any day now" predictions they incorrectly made.
That chart will make this one look like Nostradamus himself was making the picks.
January 25th, 2024 at 11:41 AM ^
and who was right?
January 25th, 2024 at 11:48 AM ^
NOOOOOOBODY
January 25th, 2024 at 11:59 AM ^
Aside from not beating OSU that bad, you got pretty darn close Seth. Right down to the trap game
January 25th, 2024 at 12:09 PM ^
Seth, what are your thoughts on MSFT and NVDA? Buy more, or sit tight for now?
January 25th, 2024 at 12:18 PM ^
I think my expertise beyond things you can learn from closely watching and writing about a lot of football is going to be limited, sadly.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:33 PM ^
If you had to do it again...as of today, for next year's team. What would you say?
January 25th, 2024 at 12:51 PM ^
I'm going to say (as of this moment):
- 9-3.
- There is no B1G East, $$$.
- How do NY6 Bowls work with the new 12-Team Playoff? I'd say a NY6 bowl, just missing the playoff...just like LSU and Notre Dame would have this year.
- Win the bowl, Michigan develops talent, and by the time the bowl rolls around we'll have the depth that we didn't have in the first half of the year. Finish 10-3.
- Most impressive...USC.
- Most surprising...None, I don't think we lose to anyone we are favored to beat.
- OSU: I refuse to answer.
- PSU: We don't play them, lol.
- MSU: W, 27-10.
- People will say Northwestern is the trap game...I mean, I guess.
- MVP: Mason Graham.
- Rusher: Yeesh...good question, I guess Edwards.
- Receiver: I hope it's Morris, but I'll say Loveland. Yikes.
- Sacks: Moore and Stewart are going to go wild... I'll go Moore.
- Interceptions: Moore again, except, the older one.
- Freshman: Everyone picked true freshmen, but it doesn't say true freshmen. So Jyaire Hill...and that might be wishful thinking.
- No, Jim Harbaugh is not back in 2025. He's back in '24 to be honored for the national championship and then he's gone for awhile. Thanks for the memories!

Buy more and go away for five years.
That is what I did just recently. These guys are going to be big AI winners.
And don't freak out when they lose a quarter of their value between now and then. That is just the nature of this beast.
You could try to time the market and wait for a dip, but that's a fool's errand. The next "dip" may be 10% higher than where they are now.
Don't buy dots (stock prices), buy lines (stock trends). Over five years, their trend is up.
