Photos Inside the Bubble: More Evidence of OSU Emphasis

Jay Feely spoke to the team last night and posted a couple photos on Facebook. That tagline at the bottom of his slideshow is interesting. Also good to see a Lloyd sighting.

(For bonus points, you can scour the slide for typos, too.)

Man I know they're trying but does anyone else feel a bit cringy when they see "what are you doing to beat Ohio State today"?  I can tell you from first hand experience (I was on their campus a couple of weeks ago) they dont use slogans.  They flat out HATE us and make no secret of it.

In their new incredible rec center they have posters from every B1G team - Michigan's is defaced.  Everywhere you go on campus the "M" is blocked out.  Every potential incoming Freshman gets indoctrinated into Michigan hatred on day one.  It's absolutely imbedded in their entire culture and IMO until we're able to match emotion they are going to be very hard to beat.

Slogans on a Power Point and on the weight room wall are nice.  But do we have any evidence that it goes any deeper than that?  What will it take for us to get as angry at getting our ass kicked as they are with our very being?  Because their hatred is real and embedded in their entire culture everywhere on campus, not just in the athletic department.

Can't say I really disagree. We all on this board have beaten this drum to death, but it was SO clear from the Hoke regime that this program hated Ohio State. You could tell from the staff, the players, and most importantly, the games, that Michigan was determined to defeat Ohio State. I mean, we bring up the 2013 game, but in 2014, Michigan was tied with OSU (the national champs) going into the fourth.

Michigan really needs to adopt Dantonio's "disrespect" mantra for OSU. We are OSU's little brother, so let's get scrappy and define our success by beating OSU.

As bad as Hoke was, he did get the team up for every OSU game. The 2013 team was coming off games vs MSU, NW, and Iowa where we had about a combined 300 yards of offense, then played the undefeated Buckeyes and put up 41 points and 600 yards. Was close to beating OSU prior to Drake Johnson’s injury in 2014. OSU had a combined 1 loss when we played them from 2012-14 and played each game close.

JH has had two close losses to OSU and 3 pantsings (2 of them at home).

Those in and around the Michigan program would need to show humility and acknowledge that Michigan isn't inherently great for the program to take that kind of cultural change. Michigan is and always has (at least in my life) been all about bravado and telling people that Michigan is the best. It's even in the intro video they play at the stadium before every game.

On local Cleveland sports radio 92.3 the Fan this morning they had on one of the OSU beat reporters and the subject of OSU win totals came up.  The over/under for OSU is 11 and they all agreed they would be the over.  Then they looked at the schedule to see where two losses could possible occur and when Michigan came up everyone started laughing.

Instead of putting cheesy slogans at the bottom of a power point how about I get a copy of that show so Jim can play that for everyone.  They LAUGH at us.  We're a joke and they have zero respect, fear or anything else for our program.  To them and all their fans we are no better than Rutgers.

If that doesnt make you mad as hell I dont think anything can.

The radio station thing is interesting. It's actually impressive that the team apparently still cares enough about the erstwhile rivalry to give their very best. You'd think by this point their coaches and players would be laughing so much as well that we might be able to sneak in an occasional victory. No such luck. They still bring it, even though they're just toying with us for the most part. They're just as mentally tough.

Of course they laugh at Michigan. They give no respect to Michigan because Michigan hasn't earned any respect. I feel like some people still think of Michigan like it's the 90s but that shit is ancient history now.

Michigan is to Ohio State as Minnesota is to Wisconsin. I know there was a time where Michigan and Minnesota got the better of their rivals but it was forever ago and those games definitely no longer define the rivalry.

Doesn't respect Michigan? Aux contraire, Michigan is respected. That respect is shown in detail. Preparation for The Game is continuous. Lose the last game of the regular season and there's a good chance there will be no Big Ten championship game, a good chance of falling out of the CFP ratings, a good chance of being relegated to the Inconsequential Bowl. Lose that game, and lose all that was deemed possible at the beginning of the season. No, the Buckeyes take Michigan and The Game very seriously.

You could question a lot of things about Hoke, I know I certainly did, but I never had to question how important beating OSU was to him. How personal it was, and how that mindset absolutely trickled down to his players. He made it known from Day 1 what the most important game on the schedule was, that if you were only going to win one game, that one was it. And they sure as hell played like it.

Do I want him back as the coach? No. The job was unfortunately too much for him to handle. But you could tell how bad he wanted that game and how whatever his team had left in the tank by the last Saturday in November, it threw it all and then some at OSU.

I'm really not down on the program (I'm looking forward to the start of this season just as much as any other) but I am incredibly frustrated with it.

Maybe it's because I live down here in Ohio where I'm openly a Michigan graduate and fan so my nose gets rubbed in it constantly.

Maybe it's because I'm also a Browns fan so when I see players like DPJ absolute KILL practice and remember he was given a fucking graduate assistant as coach one year and then Harbaugh's son & Chris Partridge his other years I cant help but wonder what he could've done at Michigan if we bothered to give him a coach who actually understand wide receiver play.

Maybe it's because I read Seth's UFR on the MSU game last year and realize our coaches never bothered to adjust anything even though State basically ran one go route the entire game.  And we had a QB running read options where keeping the ball was never an option so State's D figured out how to overplay the RBs and not got punished for it.

Or maybe it's because I've now gone on five college tours with my son and my beloved alma mater basically mailed it in and gave easily the worst tour of all the schools and sent a clear message to him "we dont really give two shits if you like the place or not or even come here because we're Michigan so we dont need you."

Hey man I appreciate the kind words and know, because I know you outside of this place a little bit that you mean it.   Go blue - maybe things will be better.  A fan and alum can certainly hope.

Mine just graduated in May. If I had to do it over again, I probably would have advised him to choose NCSU, because the incremental value was not worth the incremental cost. The over the top FU was the tuition increase in the face of less delivered value in the form of online only classes.

Totally get your frustration, but regarding the defense against MSU, that isn’t what happened. The UFR (which Brian wrote) talked about how U-M tried playing off coverage and zone and tried different CBs. The problem wasn’t that we didn’t bother to adjust; it was that we weren’t equipped to.

I do understand your frustration.  But goddammit we are going to end the flipping curse this year because all bad things eventually come to an end so why not now?

Ryan Day will prove to be overrated and Ohio state will lose at least 3 games including a loss to us to finally get the monkey off of Jim Harbaugh's back.

And the angels in heaven will rejoice

So sorry the tour didn't best the other colleges.  There is no excuse for that.

Hope for competitive football springs eternally for me in August.  I am determined not to get frustrated or negative.

I am so looking forward to retiring and returning to attend a game in person in the fall.

And there it is, I've been reading spite and vitriol and questioning why you're so angry about football...only to find out it's not about football, it's about a perceived slight on a college visit?

Any highly rated receiver has received plenty of coaching before ever stepping foot on campus. Any highly rated kicker isn't typically taking kicking advice from anyone except the kicking coach he used to get a scholarship.

While I might agree that dedicated coaches at skill positions can “see” and adjust things the skill players can't feel it's incumbent upon the player to want to get better and spend the time to do so.

This is a sports blog so please tone it down, keep it about football, and I'm sorry you feel your son (one of 65,000 applicants) didn't feel the love.

You literally are incorrect in every point you're trying to make.  Which is impressive - usually posters as ill-informed as you clearly are stumble into at least one correct interpretation of someone else's opinions but not you.  You misfired on ALL of them.

Oh, and by the way my son isnt an applicant.  I was referring to the TOUR, which if you read the diary I posted last week, was a feeling shared by virtually every other poster who took the time to comment.

Reading comprehension is hard.

If OSU keeps beating us year after, the reality of human nature is that eventually their players won't take it as seriously. That will make them vulnerable, but we have to be in the position in coaching and talent to take advantage of it.

When that will be is anybody's guess.

Couldn't agree more with you about the tours and admission process.

My oldest, now 23, was fully unimpressed and she was around Michigan all her life.

My middle, now 20 and a rising Junior at Michigan, was fully underwhelmed also.  She ended up at Michigan despite the tours and process.

So many schools are doing everything they can to put their best foot forward and Michigan is simply riding its history and reputation.  I guess very much in line with the football program.

I've long said that their hatred was primarily born from the mid 70's to 2000 when we basically owned the series (18-7-1 from '76 to '00).  That same era allowed our program to not specifically focus on beating them, because more times than not, we did.

They however have made it the biggest and only game of the season and as a result have pretty much passed us by, while we floundered through coaching hires......   We need to summons the same ire and hatred toward them, fueling a single goal of beating those cooler poopers and finally pushing the pendulum back in the right direction.

I still laugh at the fact that they X out M's all over campus, but they hired urban liar, who had to initial his contract with UM.

MGrow, this is where I think college sports is starting to diverge. At one time I think the rivalry was born on respect for the other program. You didn't like them, but you respected them. Somehow (not getting into a full society monologue) that has shifted to hate. That is how trees in Alabama get poisoned. That is how a San Fran Giants fan ends up in the hospital for attending a Dodgers/Giants game. I don't want that path. That isn't sports or fandom. That is simply crazy and disturbing. I have no doubt a good portion of OSU fans would be willing to do all kinds of horrible things to Michigan related stuff.  For me, matching that isn't the answer.

I generally agree with you here but I will say that I still hope our football team, not the general campus, gets to a point where they "hate" getting their ass handed to them by those assholes so much so they do something about it.

FWIW My larger point though was we make little slogans and put them on the bottom of a power point.  It reminded me of multiple sales meetings I've attended through the years where the CEO and marketing did something similar because they just KNEW that would inspire everyone to sales greatness.

All it really did was generate eye rolls with the sales team.  I cant help but wonder if "what are you doing today to beat Ohio State" does the same thing with our players.

Seriously ... try wearing a Michigan jersey in Columbus.  They will spit on you, kick you, and whatever else they want to do.  That's "normal" for their "fans" (thugs).

I pray Michigan Stadium and fans in AA will never be like that.  It would also be wonderful if our season ticket holders were REAL fans and wouldn't sell their ohio tickets.  It is fucking embarrassing to go to Michigan Stadium and see thousands of their worthless "fans" in our Stadium.

This will end ... no one wins every fucking time.  We did win in 2016 ... other than the refs gave ohio the win (and that wasn't just on the spot of the ball).

Here's my take:

First off, I agree with you.  They flat out hate us and they don't hide it.  My mom and dad are from Cleveland and are OSU fans.  I have aunts/uncle/cousins etc who went to OSU.  My lovely goddaughter is an OSU fan.  ugh!  Anyway I see it first hand.

With that, we used to be that way back in the 90s.  But something changed in the 2000s and on that gradually changed this perception on campus.  And I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that OSU has had our number for awhile, but rather the student make-up has change considerably since then.  While I haven't checked in the past couple years, since the early 2000s, Michigan has been taking more and more out of state students, particularly international students.  These types of students typically don't care about OSU, and other than thinking it's an inferior academic school, they really don't have an opinion on it.  Therefore, the OSU hate has gradually eroded over the years on campus.  At least that is my theory.

My other observation from my family, is that outside of football, OSU fans still know Michigan is vastly superior in just about everything else (i.e. basketball, academics, etc.).  And that still chaps their ass.  So their hate still shines strong in their fanbase and at school.  Again, just my theroy.

When we had the upper hand in the rivalry, beating very good OSU teams with average (by record) Michigan teams, I believe we became complacent within the program and that filtered all the way to the fans.  Then our shit storm started when Tressel came onto the scene and re-energized OSU just as Carr started losing his touch.  And the shit really hit the fan when RR took over and it snowballed in completely the wrong direction for Michigan.  The rest, as they say, is the shitty history that we have endured from 2007 to now.

What could we put our finger on that might be the tipping point when things changed? Hmmm. I have one.

The basketball scandal that opened the door and allowed the eggheads the leverage over the athletics department. Like is often said about a marriage, power that you give away is nearly impossible to recoup. Bo ran roughshod over the administration and was rarely if ever restrained. If Bo wanted to give a kid a scholarship and a chance. The kid got it. Once the extent of the negligence of the Athletic Dept was laid bare in the Ed Martin ordeal it was the bingo that the eggheads had waited for. They became the power at the University of Michigan and have remained in that position since. I thought Harbaugh might be a big enough personality to claw that power back but the quick behavioral corrections anytime he was outspoken showed me otherwise. Watch Bo’s speech on the TV show following the Big 10 vote where Michigan got jobbed. His bitterness and vitriol were on clear display. Harbaugh gets his PeePee slapped for saying the refs in Columbus were terrible. Congrats academia, you were right. Athletics invite controversy and cutting their balls off is a great way to make sure we don’t get anymore embarrassing incidents like MBB had. But now we’re going to struggle cuz the others who oppose us would send you back to a dark corner of a library for eternity if you attempted to get in their way.
