OT: Alex Trebek has pancreatic cancer

Submitted by Magnus on March 6th, 2019 at 7:24 PM

Jeopardy! had a message from Alex Trebek stating that he has stage 4 pancreatic cancer (LINK). That's terrible news. I feel bad for the guy and his family. I don't even know how long he's been on Jeopardy! (I'm sure I will find out with a quick Google search right after this), but it's been as long as I can remember.

I sure hope he can pull through.

Trebek has been hosting Jeopardy! since 1984. Thanks, Google.

Also, he's 78 years old. I had no idea he was that old. He looks like he's about 65.

The fact that the show has been on the air for 50(?) years says most people think it's entertaining.  The show took off when Trebek took over.  He should be in the HOF.  One of the best ever game show hosts and he seems like a genuinely great person.  This news really sucks.

Television Gameshows: The medium for the enlightened.

Answering in the form of a question, how sophisticated.

Its fine if you like it. I was poking fun. I don’t think intelligence metrics should be applied to those that see the show for what it is.

I guess I have a lead sandwich to consume and a wheel of fortune show to watch. That show has been around for fifty years so you KNOW it’s good.

Wow this is a strange thing to go all kill, kill, kill on but I guess you're triggered by it.

You might want to be more clear as to what you're criticizing because its not helping your case comparing Jeopardy to Wheel of Fortune; was that cuz one always comes after the other? (No matter where in America you may be at 7/7:30)

Fact is, one is like a trip to the casino and the other is like preparing for the LSAT than having to try to pass it orally in front of millions.

I still would prefer to be on Jeopardy, I'm a terrible speller.

I'm working on a number dense 150 page document. I go to this blog for UM sports and general hilarity, of which this board is filled. I try to add my own to contribute to the general good, and I get a chuckle here and there whilst underwater on a tight deadline. I will literally talk about the speed of paint drying for my brief mental breaks. We talking Jeopardy... okay!

To all game show watchers, I aint mad at cha... I've got nothing but love for ya... do your thing.

Our 9 year old grandson, the die hard Michigan fan, comes to our house from school 2 or 3 times a week. He arrives just before jeopardy comes on...it is his favorite show...and given the options-I am very pleased. He's a very bright little guy-does well with the math, science, history and geography related categories.

Hate to say it, but pancreatic cancer is a very, very short death sentence in most instances.  Prayers.

When my Dad got diagnosed with it, they gave him 18 months. He died five days after his 60th birthday, 18 months later.

Dad was a real stickler for being on time, so my brother and I joke that he probably died at the 18-month point just to be punctual.

sorry about that sam.  i just remember that in all the homicide cases i've done, if the initial shot/stab/punch didn't do the deceased in, it was the pancreas that gave out and game over.  a  little, tiny, but incredibly important part of our bodies.

Awful news. Scary too as I can only assume with his fame and fortune he has regular medical tests, etc. which (again I assume) means this went badly quickly. Maybe too many assumptions in there,

I have watched Jeopardy every day since 1984. The thought of it without Alex is like the CBS evening news without Walter Cronkite, or the Tonight Show without Johnny Carson. The franchise will continue, but its golden age will have passed. Sad news indeed.
