Coaches Mattison & Washington had their OSU pressers with a summary of comments by 11W

Some quotes:

Mattison said he wanted to be a coordinator, which played a big part in his decision to leave his role as Michigan's defensive line coach to come to Ohio State.

"Coach Harbaugh was great," Mattison said, about his decision to leave Ohio State. Said Harbaugh understood that he wanted to be a coordinator. The hardest part of leaving Michigan, Mattison said, was calling his players and letting them know.

Mattison described Ohio State and Michigan as "two of the greatest programs in college football."

I mean, I get it, kind of.  It's a promotion.  I guess it would surprise me if the guy hadn't bailed on us before for Notre Dame.  That wasn't even a promotion.

Truth is, he didn't have to stay when Harbaugh demoted him, so whatever.  He clearly did good stuff for us when he was here.  Pisses me off, but time to move forward and kick his ass.

Looks photo shopped with that shirt on. Hard to believe. Oh well, enjoy the coach who won 0 times against our biggest rival and has 0 conference championships.

My wife and I once made an offer on Mattison's home in Ann Arbor. This was when he was about to leave Michigan as DC under Lloyd Carr to work at Notre Dame where his daughter had gotten a softball scholarship. I didn't know till after I'd gone through the house, that it was his. And it was a great property, which he'd personally fixed up, especially the basement. And I wasn't alone in thinking this; his house sold above asking with multiple offers turned away including ours.

So, that taught me a valuable lesson about this guy. It taught me that as much as he values loyalty and company employment, he values personal and family security much more. Take that for what it's worth in judging his decision to leave Michigan for a second time and fudging the fact that he isn't even the primary DC for Ryan Day, whom he first met as a grad assistant at Florida while working for Urban Meyer as one of two DC's. Whether you get it or not, Mattison is highly respected in the college football world, especially among the folks that we root for and against.

But in the end, Mattison puts family first. Which explains why he took the job in Columbus, It pays more. And if you want to boo him for that, I get it. Just saying the guy acts like most of us when it comes to personal needs.

Wrong. Taking a few extra dollars that have little incremental benefit given his age and salary history vs. relocating away from his extended family (leaving them behind to endure the criticisms) makes grandpa Matty look more like a selfish prick than a dedicated family man.

Found your post very interesting (well you've never had a post that wasn't).

What I get from it?  Mattison puts care and thought into everything he does.

OSU, even after what they did to us in their hellhole of a stadium with their hyped-up football squad, has insecurities that Day was working to address.  Said insecurities led him to someone he knew and trusted from previous jobs... Mattison.

What does this say about Mattison, Harbaugh, Day... Mattison is respected because he's the guy that if you hire him, he has your back.  That's worth more than money to head coaches.  It means you can trust him.  He will be 100% loyal to whoever is signing his paycheck.

Day needed him more than Harbaugh does at this point in time.  I'd like to think Mattison will be conducting espionage and sabotage behind enemy lines, it's far more likely he will be helping Day accomplish whatever he needs to.  I just hope it won't matter to us.

Classy comments from both Mattison and Washington, and I wish them success in their personal lives.

Professionally, I wish them none of the success in the world.  I hope they lose every game next year, and one in particular.

Hate me, neg me, ban me or do what you want. I dont give a shit about mattison anymore or anything he says. This is twice he left for a rival, this time after him and his family talk about how special it is here. Fuck him

My opinion, dont like it? Dont care, some things are not forgivable. I still believe in loyalty and Rivalries

I have a great appreciation for Matty. Our defenses would have been demonstrably worse without him. He was a good dude and players loved him. Is it annoying he left for OSU? Sure. But he’s close to retiring and he’s being brought in to groom a young guy who is early in his career. I want to be more worked up than I am but have a feeling he’s drinking Arnold Palmers in two years with his feet up and OSU won’t get much value out of him.

Washington hurt from a recruiting standpoint but he wasn’t here long and positional assistants move a lot.

That said it’s not like we can do any worse against OSU than we have lately. They’ve already been out coaching and out recruiting us. These two guys won’t make or break that. We have replaced them with young, talented coaches who hopefully can match and surpass them.

Its a business. Gross to see them in scarlet and grey but the traitor talk is a little overblown IMO.

I don't agree that the traitor talk is overblown.  However, I do agree with your "we can't do any worse against OSU than we have lately" take on things.

I mean, you want to hire our coaches that have been partly responsible for our teams shitty performances against your team?

Fuck it, they can have him.  Might as well try something different.

Maybe Ryan Day is an old school G and was sending the message that if you take 1 of ours, we will take two of yours ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

As ridiculous as that is, it is no more ridiculous than calling him a traitor.  The board happily excuses processing players, it’s part of the game.  However, when somebody transfers or a coach leaves for a promotion and more money they are traitors?  It’s part of the same game.  How do you begrudge a guy leaving to make more money and have a shot at a co-DC position to put a bow on his legacy?  I’d have thought there would be more appreciation for what he has done for UM.   There was no outcry of “traitor” when Warinner left tOSU to go to UM.  Coaches leave all of the time, as do players.  He humbled himself to take a demotion and still was a great coach for UM after taking a smaller role. I don’t get how people don’t understand wanting another bite at the apple in the twighlight of his career.

The traitor talk is absolutely overblown.  Was Warinner a traitor for going to UM? Of course not.  Mattison and Washington were only slightly different in that their careers had not run their full course at UM and they were still welcome.  Warinner did what he needed to do to advance his career which is the same that Mattison and Washington did.  Coaches turn over all of the time, it’s part of the deal.  I don’t get the vitriol to a guy in the twighlight of his career wanting another shot at being  DC or Co-Dc.

I Like what Craig Ross said on a recent podcast....

"I'd cut my arm off before I'd go to osu",

no love for coach matty from me either.
