JJ Continues to Lead Nation in Completion Percentage; Blake No. 1 in TDs, No. 2 in Rushing

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on October 16th, 2022 at 10:16 AM

For the past several weeks, JJ McCarthy has led the nation in completion percentage, and after yesterday's 17-for-24 game, he continues to be No. 1, at 77.1 percent. He's also No. 10 in QBR.

With his two TDs yesterday, Blake Corum is back up to No. 1 in rushing touchdowns, with 13 on the season. He's also up to No. 2 in rushing yardage with 901 yards, trailing only future opponent Chase Brown of Illinois, who has 1,059.

Get some rest this week and then keep it up, fellas.

Exactly. If OSU and Michigan swapped all their WRs, Michigan still doesn't put up much more receiving numbers. Harbaugh wants a team built on running the ball, controlling the clock, and punishing teams. Michigans receivers would have much gaudier numbers if they were to go to schools with more of a modern passing offense.

This is a good point. Deep ball “accuracy” can be how well a receiver can “fly ball” it and time running under it. That pass by Clifford was nice but the play was made by the receiver. It hit his hands because he got where he knew the ball was going to hit. It’s not all on JJ unless those balls really were just 1-2 yards past those receivers 100% max sprint idk.

edit: and I’d much rather miss long with no chance of a pick. Just sayin’

"We may not...."

Wow..what insight.

This time last year it was about the great OSU and how little chance UM had...

42-27

They may be better this year...and UM may be better too.

Too soon to worry about it...lots of football to be played and UM just played its most complete game this year

My cool story bro for the day.  I took my daughter to a birthday party after the Michigan game at a bouncy house establishment in Raleigh.  I was wearing my Michigan jersey and a younger guy noticed it and we started chatting.  He is from Birmingham, AL and is good friends with Nico Collins and his family.  He was a WR in high school and he played for a different HS than Nico.  He and Nico are about the same age and played HS ball around the same time, so they played against each other.  He worked for the bouncy house place and he was busy so we only talked for like a minute so unfortunately I didn't get to ask many questions.

I told him every Michigan fan was bummed about the COVID year debacle and how Nico understandably opted out.  We were all stoked for a huge season from him.  Anyway, it was pretty cool.

3.  Donovan Edwards is a Swiss Army knife.  Was nice to see his vision in the run game start to mature this past game, but he was already one of the best receiving RBs to come through CFB in the past decade.
Not hyperbole… Edwards is up there with the likes of Christian Mccaffrey, Saquon Barkley and Reggie Bush as a pass receiving RB.  He could easily play as a slot WR in the NFL.

Most importantly, our O-line makes all this go and makes it all so much easier for the entirety of the team to play complimentary football.

Some great perspective there on JJ. It seems like he is sometimes held to an unreasonable standard. Guy is doing as well as anyone could have expected going into the year. The other hidden value is how much he helps the run, even when he’s not running. That huge run by Edwards yesterday was helped when #4 flexed out to address JJ, thereby leaving  an extra hole. That stuff is huge as well, and almost impossible to quantify in the stats. Hoping for a true coming out party against MSU.

JJ has incredible talent both with the arm and the ability to run.

The deep out on the roll out is a play very few QBs are going to make. That is so hard to defense.  He chose that over the short route because he is confident he has that play. His running changed the complexion of the game.

I thought this was his worst game decision making wise and he needs to be more careful.

In a closer game we could get burned. The interception had almost zero chance of being a plus play. Throw that ball away.  The floater to Corum could also have been a disaster. He had few other throws as well that were way to dangerous.

I've liked how we've used JJ the last few weeks. Feels like we've run him maybe 3-5 times a game. Not enough to take a ton of hits, but enough times to keep a defender watching JJ and not watching Blake and that's all you really need to make this run offense truly lethal as Penn State found out yesterday

It's also interesting that Chase Brown of Illinois has by far the most carries in the country at 192. The second-place guy has 168. Blake has 146.

Chase Brown is going to be pretty tuckered out by the time we get to him.

I think after a couple more weeks Corum will legitimately be getting more national attention which will be nice to see. I think the run game this year is better than last year which is crazy, although that could be the strength of schedule as well.

He doesn't fumble.  Haven't heard people mention that much yet.  We have a ton of data  and sample size at this point to back up that statement.  Barry and Hart had incredibly low fumbles per carry.

I’ve been saying the same thing. No coincidence that his position cos, Mike Hart didn’t lose a fumble until one of the last games of his college career. Hart protected the fb better than just about any RB I have even seen.

And I could well be mis-remembering, but IIRC, Hart fumbled twice in the Red Zone (maybe once and someone else turned it over in the RZ) in that bowl game against Florida.  It was the only thing that prevented it from becoming a complete blowout as Michigan dominated.  Also, IIRC, Michigan went full spread that game and caught Florida by surprise.

We have a balanced offense with JJ's passing plus his running ability and then there's the steady play from Blake Corum. Add to that Donovan Edwards as another threat, if he keeps playing like like he did yesterday then watch out!

Let's not forget the great WR guys we have ie Ronnie Bell, Roman Wilson, CJ and don't sleep on Schoonmaker or Andrel Anthony. BTW, can't forget the OL and overall blocking from TE and WR guys. The whole equals the sum of its parts-What an offense!
