I think both sides basically said what they wanted to in a reasonably cordial manner.

Dantonio seems like a good coach who had the fortune of finding a pocket in the power structure of the conference and filling it.  MSU should be a consistent 8-9 win team, but due to UM, PSU, and to some extent OSU being down somebody had to win those games and he did.  But his defense has holes, and the good offenses in the nation seem to have figured it out.  My guess is that as UM and PSU continue to rise, MSU will start losing more games not because of their previous "Sparty NO" tendencies but just because they are being out-talented/out-coached.

I dislike Dantonio as a person but I respect what he's done.  But it also seems like he's been feasting on the neutered RR/hopeless Hoke eras and thinking that's how it will be in the future; Harbaugh (and by proxy his staff) aren't going to be intimidated/insulted by a clenched jaw and some faux toughness.

Jaybaugh is like your VP running mate in a Presidential election . . . he does the dirty work, calling out your opponent, while you stay above the fray.

He's good at it and you can tell he kind of likes it.

So, Jay Harbaugh is like... Richard Nixon? Lyndon Johnson? Spiro Agnew? Sargent Shriver? Geraldine Ferraro? Dan Quayle? Admiral Stockdale? John Edwards? Dick Cheney?

Yeah, that's a ringing endorsement if I've ever heard one.

I like Jay's response. Recruits need to hear that despite what Dantonio thinks, we aren't selling "hope". The coaching staff is certain of the success to come just as much as we were when Harbaugh got hired. Michigan WILL win, hope has nothing to do with it.

Not shocked to see the high and mighty stick your nose in the air Michigan fans on this thread. You respond to it because it's a jab that recruits take notice of! Jay flipped it around and told every recruit they offered that the coaching staff believes they are harder workers than anyone else. This type of thing done off the field will produce results on the field. The culture of vaginitis that Hoke instilled must be erased.

I think we hear way too much about of a 26 year old, first year year postion coach who was hired on pure nepotisim. I cannot think of any other position coach that has ever garnered so much attention.

Gotta agree. While I agree with his message, a message about having to work for success sounds funny coming from the son of the head coach. While I love his fire, Jay needs to understand he is clowning himself a bit and just put his head down and go to work.

Agree with both you guys.

People higher on thread are saying "Harbaugh should not back down" as if this is Jim speaking.  It is Jay.  Whose greatest accomplishment is being a video coordinator or whatever the title was and who wouldnt have sniffed this job if his dad wasnt coach.

I prefer people just shut up and let their work do the talking but especially in Jay's case where he has almost negligible accomplishments.  Yeah yeah I get the Super Bowl ring but cumong man.

If Drevno or Durkin or Jim said it - it's one thing.  Jay needs to go out there and go win a recruiting battle or something.

Jay is in a lose-lose. Even if he's fantastic and M is very successful, the credit is going to go everywhere else. If we send 2 NFL TEs to the 1st rd it'll be because of JIm Harbaugh in the eyes of most. People will never be happy with his accomplishments, which are already impressive for somebody his age, as long as he's viewed as a beneficiary of his last name. He would have to be the HC which is unreasonable to ask at this point.

I don't mind comments like this from the Michigan camp.  Too often over the past 7 years Michigan has been passive socially against snappy comments from rivals, and I guess for good reason because for the most part we haven't been very good.  Even though they haven't played a real game yet, it feels good to finally hear a bit of confidence from the staff.

He's a dick and says a lot of dickish things, but this doesn't rank up there.

FACT: MSU has recently won a lot of games (they've won 10+ in 4/5 season).

FACT: We have not.

So, when Harbaugh and his staff sell Michigan to recruits, it's on the promise that we will be great (and I'm sure we will), not on the last few years of win-loss records at Michigan.

What a bunch of butthurt fans...MSU has won four bowls in a row, with two BSC bowls.  Tell us, when was the last time we did this?  I'm listening...

We have to get over our "little brother" attidtude.  MSU is here, and if we want them to STFU, we should beat their asses instead of talking about history.  History is not in our favor when measured against their accomplishments.  Yes, Bo was great and frickin' awesome in the Big 10, but he got his ass kicked in the bowl games.  If you wish to argue this point, list his bowl record first.  Bo was great--I met the man--but his bowl record wasn't great.  So, don't tell us MSU's record in nothing in the last five years compared to ours during the Bo years.  We absolutely need to get over it--MSU is making a name for themselves.

JayBaugh has done nothing, yet.

Let me know when el douche sniffs an NFL head coaching job much less turn a bad franchise around immediately and take them to a Super Bowl in year 2.

They're insecure because they know what's coming. Anyone who doesn't is just being delusional. No one is saying Michigan is going to go 12-0 this year.

Stanford didn't in Harbaugh's first year. But they did make quite the splash.

For anyone to suggest that Harbaugh won't turn things around here is being an idiot. Go look at Harbaugh's results.

We aren't exactly selling hope. I think we're really selling a top five head coach at any level, plus a plethora of elite NFL level assistance. Not sure how that equates to hope, but whatever

One other thing Michigan could be selling - sending a fair number of its players to the NFL, or at least as many as MSU.  Over the past 5 years, I think Michigan and MSU are tied for draftees, and UM actually has more first-3 round selections over that time.  So despite enduring one of the worst stretches in the team's history while MSU has enjoyed unprecedented success, UM is still producing a higher-caliber player, or at least one that the NFL feels is more "pro-ready" compared to MSU.  Not that it should mean a whole hell of a lot to some kids, but if you have NFL aspirations the fact MSU doesn't showcase you all that well unless you are a DB should give you pause.

Never been a huge fan of the vitriolic trash talk I see, in either side. Win with class, score like Barry did: no big deal because you expect to be there again.

Msu has done a hell of a job putting a program together from the tire fire that was the bobby Williams era. I give Dantonio a lot of credit for that.

But I'm tired of hearing (some) asshole Spartans refer to me as scUM, etc. half the ppl that do are internet Barnie badasses. Wimps behind internet packets.

I don't know if we will beat them this year, but when Harbaugh makes us competitive again I will be quite happy.

This is a good post.  We can win with class.  Harbaugh is our guy, and he is classy.  We fans shoudl be the same.  After we beat MSU ass, then we'll talk.  Until then, we'll keep quiet and wait.  Let's just let the wins speak for themselves.  We are THE University of Michigan!

He has been a dick with a sour attitude from day one.  Now that he has been winning he just can't turn it off and act like Sparty has won before.  I can't wait until we start beating them again.  Then watch him cry.

Sparty fans are like cockroaches now.  They are everywhere.   When we starting beating them it will be like turning on the light in the kitchen watching them run for cover.  You won't be able them like the old days.

Our day is coming again men and victory will be sweet.

While I am not a fan of Jay's twitter message I hate the fact that people keep saying "shut up until we win". This is a rivalry. If we dont shit talk its going to turn into a Minnesota Michigan game where yea we play for the brown jug but does anyone really care? I love the fact that these coaches are fighting back. I am tired of being the school that sends out apologies to our rivals. I am tired of Michigan looking soft. Yea sure we havent been winning against them lately but I would rather lose and shit talk than lose with our tails between our legs.

People encourage all the competitiveness/jabs from Jim but want Jay (who Jim saw fit to be a major position coach) to sit down and be quiet for a few years first until they're comfortable with his resume. People are holding being Harbaugh's son against him, which is ridiculous.

The Michigan Program has never been about hope or a future success. The program has always been a beacon of expectation. The majority of the posts on here conclude that teams have under-performed with the exception of 2008.

Harbaugh is most certainly not selling hope. Dantonio had to deal with the humiliation from Michael Hart's comments and he used it to fuel his passion for success. He needs to be careful not to practice stupidity because we all know the Harbaughs are driven men.

After years of acting as if arrogance was the greatest affront to college fandom, Sparties haven't seemed to have any problem adopting that attitude after a handful of good years.

Of course the difference is UM fans are arrogant even when their teams aren't winning and Sparties go back under the bridge when their teams are losing.
