Izzo: "I need time to sit and look at everything" and "I'm not retiring"

Submitted by Piston Blue on

Looks like Dantonio and Izzo are doubling down. We'll see how this plays out over the next few weeks/months.

His cult of personality will only buy him so much time. Only the outright delusional will be left supporting him and Dantonio, which is only 90% of RCMB. "Don't flinch", Mark & Tom. Your expiration date is approaching.

Not Nassar specifically, but ESPN investigated their programs and found the football program had 16 guys reported for sexual assault/violence against women since Dantonio took over.

At least one of them were dealt with by Dantonio personally and not reported to police.

This won't be popular, but I see all you so convinced they are for sure gone, and I think you are getting caught up in the moment. I'd be beyond shocked if anything serious happened to either of them.

I won't be. Michigan State is now under a microscope, and will be for the foreseeable future. That being said, new management will be looking to clean up their heavily tarnished image. They can either face relentless, and justified, criticism of retaining contributors to their culture problem, or simply let them go and begin the bullshit "healing process" and "redemption" that the media now gifts PSU despite their victims not sharing that sentiment at all.

but at this point - thanks to MSU itself - the WORLD is now watching, and having an opinion on if justice is finally going to get served to those who deserve it - for doing it, or for repeatedly covering it up and looking the other way.

Sexual abuse has been a literal global pandemic and hundreds of millions of people today are living each day with what has happended - or is CONTINUING to happen to them. Burning this down with fire is JUSTICE for ALL of those people as well. Someone is finally paying the proper price for looking the other way for far, far too long.

Much of the planet has been screaming in pain and SILENCE for literally ever - and now it is going to openly SCREAM until the right thing is finally done. We are starting to see, for maybe the first time in histoy - a collective broken mass of survivors finally saying - ENOUGH IS FUCKING ENOUGH!

I would normally agree with you, but we're living in a time when ( I would say fortunately as a father of 2 teenage girls) those in positions of authority are shitting themselves to either prevent or limit damage from such allegations.  I've seen it personally at my workplace.

I don’t think any of the coaches can survive this. But, If they decide to Izzo is worth keeping, Dantonio can perhaps ride his coat tails.

The basketball allegations are further from being revealed than the football so... And izzo is way more of a "figure" than D'antoni. I would expect him to last as long as he wants.

So between MSU and their insurance carriers will outlay the 100 million or so for the Nassar case.

How are they get anyone to insure them again with Izzo and Dantonio still employed and these allegations hanging over their heads?

Pretty sure the coverage is on the school not the individual. So the individual can be sued by anyone but is insured in the capacity as hired by the institution. Plain people speak = MSU is on the hook not the coach individually. The coaches carry no legal repercussions if they move on.

The coverage is on the school, but the insurer will fight tooth and nail to void the general liability policy. PSU entered a confidential settlement with its insurer over Sandusky. I think it’s a given this is already being negotiated given MSU hired Latham & Watkins ($$$$) to handle the Nassar insurance issues. We’ll have to wait and see. Currently, the lawsuits filed by gymnasts are playing out, but one would think (and perhaps I’m ignorant and these already exist) there will be suits by victims of football/basketball following the OTL report etc.

I must admit, I find the schadenfreude over Izzo & Dantonio's predicament a bit off putting. They might deserve this, but this is a nationwide issue among athletic programs, including our own. If people treat this like a MSU problem and not a universal problem, then this is all for naught. And while we're throwing Izzo and Dantonio under the bus, can we at least throw Jimbo Fisher under there as well?

in that we need to reexamine the culture. This post has nothing to do with my fandom, I simply quoted what Izzo said. That being said, the system of college athletics is broken in this sense. It's no wonder cases like this occur, because if you rid your team of enough of your players, then the team will start performing poorly, and if the team starts performing poorly, the coaches might get fired and have their multimillion dollar contracts terminated. There's no doubt that this could happen/be happening at any major university, but obviously this case is more relevant to us because of the proximity and history with the involved program.

You’re criticizing others for being critical about those who cover up sexual assault. Your point is taken about this being a broader problem, but don’t conflate criticism with a sports rivalry. The evidence doesn’t look good for Dantonio and Izzo. Michigan fan or not, one should able to criticize them and call for their ousting without your chastising.

For info regarding their programs repeated suppression of legal action against their athletes. This was a 3 year investigation. Clearly MSU hid and tried to prevent OTL from getting the facts of these assaults. Did you see the redacted documents that MSU “handed over" to ESPN? They went through whole toner cartridges to black out those pages.
